Nvidia, Microsoft and other tech giants back open-source AI models

SAN FRANCISCO, USA – Nvidia, Microsoft, and other tech heavyweights made a public case to lawmakers on Friday, July 24, in favor of open-source AI models, wading into a debate roiling the business and policy worlds over who controls the powerful technology.

In a letter posted on X and also signed by two dozen companies and groups including Meta Platforms and IBM, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that lawmakers should avoid “premature restrictions on open models that stifle competition or drive innovation overseas.”

The letter adds to the growing debate about open-source models that are harder to regulate, such as Nvidia’s own and those released in recent weeks by Chinese labs, and the closed-source models controlled by specific companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

In recent months, Silicon Valley business leaders have bristled at the cost of closed source models. The CEOs of Microsoft and defense contractor Palantir Technologies have publicly argued that open-source models their customers can run inside their own data centers will help control AI costs.

Tech leaders have also chafed at controls that OpenAI and Anthropic build into their models. Hugging Face, the AI coding collaboration site that was hacked by a rogue OpenAI model, this week said that it had to use a Chinese open-source model to defend against the attack because closed-source models have restrictions on use for cybersecurity work.

At the same time, US lawmakers alarmed by the rogue OpenAI cyberattack proposed legislation that would require a “kill switch” for AI models, and President Donald Trump’s administration is weighing sanctions on Chinese open-source model makers over alleged theft of US closed-source technology.

The letter from Nvidia and other companies acknowledged the concerns about technology theft but argued they should be addressed “through targeted legal and commercial frameworks rather than sweeping restrictions.”

“Relying solely on closed models is not inherently safe: they can be breached, misused, or fail in ways that outsiders cannot detect,” the letter said. “Open weight models, on the other hand, allow a broad community of researchers and developers to examine their behavior, identify vulnerabilities, develop safeguards, and improve them over time.” – Rappler.com

Disney has tried something similar before, though it didn’t end well. It once let OpenAI’s Sora tool generate videos using its characters, but the experiment was short-lived. OpenAI pulled Sora a few months later, following criticism over violence, racism, deepfakes and misinformation risks tied to the tool. The TikTok announcement arrived at a convenient moment for Disney, landing alongside the company’s newest earnings report, which beat market expectations. Shares climbed 4.6% in pre-market trading, much of it linked to the strong box-office run of “Toy Story 5.” Disney’s parks and experiences division also posted solid growth, with revenue rising 10% year-on-year to hit $10 billion on the back of higher visitor numbers. Season two of “Rivals” added to the good news, becoming the biggest original series premiere yet for Disney+ in the UK and Ireland. Between the TikTok deal and a strong earnings day, Disney has plenty to smile about this week.

    AI errors hit report behind Australia’s under-16 ban

    A government-commissioned report that helped support Australia’s plan to restrict social media access for children under 16 has come under scrutiny after several inaccurate and apparently fabricated academic references were identified. The report, produced as part of a $3.48 million government-funded trial examining age-assurance technologies, was prepared by the Age Check Certification Scheme (ACCS). The organisation has acknowledged that ChatGPT was used to rewrite parts of the document after initially denying that artificial intelligence had been involved. An analysis of the report found six problematic citations in a chapter examining emerging technologies. Some of the digital object identifiers, or DOIs, reportedly directed readers to research papers that did not exist. Other references contained combinations of authors, journals and publication dates that could not be verified in academic records. In another case, a DOI reportedly led to a genuine research paper, but the paper did not support the claim attributed to it in the report. The controversy intensified after ACCS was questioned about the use of artificial intelligence. A spokesperson initially said no AI had been used in producing the report. The organisation later acknowledged that ChatGPT metadata was present in four links across two sections of the document. ACCS maintained that the metadata effectively disclosed the use of the tool and said the references had been manually checked. However, efforts to correct the disputed citations reportedly resulted in further inconsistencies. One example involved a research paper that an ACCS source said had been accessed in March 2025. According to the paper’s lead author, however, the research was not published until June 2025, raising additional questions about the accuracy of the report’s references. The report has attracted attention because it was used in the policy process surrounding Australia’s planned restrictions on social media for under-16s. Communications Minister Anika Wells had previously praised the report for identifying potential approaches to age verification. The minister’s department told a Senate inquiry that it had discussed the citation problems with ACCS. However, the department was reportedly informed about faulty links rather than allegations that some references had been fabricated. Australian National University academic Christian Downie warned that unreliable references can have serious consequences regardless of whether they were generated by AI or resulted from human error. He said inaccurate citations could contribute to poor policymaking and weaken public confidence in government-commissioned research. Independent Senator Fatima Payman also compared the controversy with a separate case involving Deloitte, which refunded part of a $440,000 government contract after problems were identified with AI-generated references.

    Meta’s AI model breaches company system in security test gone wrong

    Meta confirmed on Wednesday that one of its AI models broke into another company’s system during a cybersecurity test. The incident has fuelled growing fears about AI agents acting on their own to launch attacks. The breach happened because of a configuration mistake made by Irregular, the firm running the test. That error accidentally gave Meta’s AI model open access to the internet during the evaluation. This isn’t an isolated case either. Anthropic’s model reportedly tried building fake online identities to sneak into secure systems during its own controlled testing, exposing yet another security gap. OpenAI faced a similar problem too. Its AI agent broke past testing limits on its own, exploiting vulnerabilities nobody knew existed and interacting directly with real external systems. Meta says it’s now investigating the incident. The company explained that its model exploited a flaw in a third-party service, describing it as similar to cases already reported at other firms. According to a report from The Information, the model involved was Meta’s Muse Spark 1.1. It’s billed as the company’s top system for real-world coding and independent, agent-driven tasks. The model reportedly broke into an unnamed company’s systems and altered its internal setup. Irregular pushed back on how serious the incident actually was. A spokesperson called it the same evaluation-environment issue Anthropic had already disclosed the previous week, adding that it wasn’t a sandbox escape or a sophisticated attack. The firm said there are no unresolved issues at this stage. It’s now preparing a white paper outlining best practices for containing and safely running cybersecurity evaluations. These back-to-back incidents across three major tech firms have caught the attention of US lawmakers. Many worry that increasingly capable AI models could eventually be weaponized for real cyberattacks. A group of Republican state attorneys general has already asked OpenAI to preserve all records tied to a separate security incident involving Hugging Face. OpenAI responded by saying it’s treating the matter seriously and plans to publish a full technical report. Meanwhile, the White House has stepped in too. It invited top AI companies, including Google, Meta, Anthropic and OpenAI, to discuss a new voluntary framework for cybersecurity testing of advanced models.
