Defender Stones joins inter Milan on free transfer

England defender John Stones has joined Italian champions Inter Milan on a free transfer and signed a two-year contract, bringing an end to his trophy-laden decade at Manchester City.

The 32-year-old left City when his deal expired at the end of June after 10 successful years at the Premier League club. Stones said he had “lived all my dreams out” after helping City win six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.

Since becoming a free agent, the centre-back attracted interest from clubs across Europe, including Chelsea and Juventus, before ultimately choosing the Italian champions. Inter Milan were crowned Serie A champions for the 21st time last season and will begin their title defence against newly promoted Monza on Saturday, 22 August.

Former Barnsley defender Stones made 295 appearances for City, scoring 19 goals, after joining from Everton for £47.5 million in 2016. He has won 93 caps for England and was part of the squad that finished third at this summer’s World Cup, starting the quarter-final victory against Norway and the 2-1 semi-final defeat by Argentina.

The move to Inter represents a new chapter for the experienced defender, who will be looking to bring his wealth of experience to the Serie A champions as they prepare to defend their domestic crown and compete in European competition. Stones will be hoping to make an immediate impact in Italy’s top flight when the new season gets underway later this month.

Rana slams Naqvi’s ‘confusing’ provinces rem…

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Adviser on Political Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, said it was true that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had instructed party leaders not to respond to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s recent statements. He added that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) strongly disagreed with both the content and tone of Naqvi’s remarks. Speaking on a television programme, Rana Sanaullah described Mohsin Naqvi’s comments as “meaningless” and lacking context. He said he had listened to Naqvi’s speech but could not understand what message he was trying to convey. “It appeared that he wanted to make a significant point but failed to explain it properly. Once he made the statement, his subsequent remarks contradicted one another. I simply could not understand what he was saying or why he was saying it,” Rana Sanaullah said. He stressed that whenever a person makes a public statement, it reflects their personal opinion, adding that it was up to Mohsin Naqvi to clarify the intent behind his remarks and take responsibility for their interpretation. Responding to Naqvi’s proposal regarding the creation of new administrative units or provinces, Rana Sanaullah said such matters could not be decided merely through public statements. “You cannot simply talk about new provinces and expect them to come into existence. The Constitution clearly defines the procedure for creating new provinces or administrative units,” he said. He maintained that the issue should first be debated in Parliament, while the final decision would rest with the leadership of the political parties. Rana Sanaullah recalled that during the PML-N government in Punjab from 2013 to 2018, the party had formally proposed the creation of new provinces. He said he had personally presented both the resolution and the proposal for establishing a commission to examine the matter. He explained that a national commission would have to be formed to review all aspects of creating new provinces, including financial resources, administrative arrangements and constitutional requirements. “The commission would also need to consult on representation in the National Assembly, provincial assemblies and the Senate. This is a highly complex issue that requires serious deliberation by experienced policymakers,” he said. Rana Sanaullah added that Pakistan could adopt smaller provinces, a stronger local government system, or even both, but such decisions should be made collectively by political parties after thorough consultation

PSX extends decline as KSE-100 drops over 1,260 po…

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) remained under pressure on Friday, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index extending its recent losing streak during the morning trading session as investor sentiment stayed weak. By the time trading was suspended for the routine Friday prayer break, the KSE-100 Index had fallen 1,264.14 points, or 0.74%, to 170,475.30. The market opened in negative territory and continued to fluctuate throughout the session. The index reached an intraday high of 171,208.55 before declining to a low of 169,512.88, reflecting persistent selling pressure across the market. Trading activity remained moderate, with more than 114 million shares changing hands during the morning session. The total value of traded shares stood at approximately Rs7.83 billion before the temporary suspension. Market participants said investors remained cautious as profit-taking continued in several heavyweight stocks. The absence of strong buying interest also contributed to the downward trend, keeping the benchmark index below its previous closing level. The market moved within a wide range of nearly 1,700 points during the session, highlighting continued volatility as investors assessed economic conditions and overall market sentiment. Analysts said investors are closely monitoring developments that could influence market direction, including corporate earnings, economic indicators and broader financial conditions. They added that confidence has remained subdued in recent sessions, resulting in increased selling activity. Trading is expected to resume after the Friday prayer break, with investors watching for signs of a recovery. Market experts believe the direction of the afternoon session will determine whether the benchmark index can recover some of its losses or end the week on another negative note.

  • Rs7.1bn Parliament lodges project faces forensic a…

Islamabad: Serious questions have been raised over the construction quality and progress of the Rs 7.1 billion New Parliament Lodges Project after the Senate House Committee found major differences between official claims and the actual condition observed during inspection. The committee was informed that although significant progress was claimed, the inspection team found that only around 20 percent of the 104 new Parliament Lodges were functionally complete. Senators raised concerns over construction standards, design changes and the quality of facilities being developed with public funds. The Senate House Committee, chaired by Senator Syedal Khan, Deputy Chairman Senate and Chairman Senate House Committee, expressed concern over the findings and decided to move towards a detailed forensic audit to examine the quality of construction work, repairs and maintenance activities. During the meeting, Senator Kamil Ali Agha informed the committee that several issues were identified during the inspection of the new lodges. These included changes from the originally approved central air conditioning system to individual air conditioning units, poor ventilation arrangements, problems in ceiling fan installation due to design limitations and unsuitable placement of storage areas near lodge entrances. Senators questioned whether the project was being completed according to the originally approved design and whether the quality of construction matched the cost involved. Officials from the Capital Development Authority informed the committee that the grey structure of the lodges had been completed and finishing work was currently underway. They stated that imported lifts were yet to be installed and furniture for the lodges had already been ordered. The CDA representative further informed the committee that an architect had been hired to prepare a model lodge design for the renovation of existing Parliament Lodges. The renovation plan would include improvements in electrical systems and other related facilities. The committee also discussed complaints regarding maintenance and repair work in existing Parliament Lodges. Senator Jan Muhammad highlighted that only limited funds had been allocated for the repair of his allotted lodge despite repeated requests over the past three years. CDA officials informed the committee that funds for the first quarter had been released and the tendering process would begin soon. They expected repair work to start in the first week of September 2026. The Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives informed the committee that the total cost of the 104 New Parliament Lodges Project stands at Rs 7.1 billion. Out of this amount, Rs 3.5 billion has already been spent, while Rs 1.1 billion has been allocated during the current financial year. The committee also discussed concerns related to transparency and accountability. CDA officials informed members that the Auditor General of Pakistan had already started an external forensic audit of repair and maintenance works, and the final report was awaited. However, the committee decided that a broader independent forensic audit should also be conducted for both the existing Parliament Lodges and the construction of the new 104 lodges. Senator Syedal Khan proposed that a professional consultancy firm led by Syed Shabbar Zaidi should conduct the audit. Senator Kamil Ali Agha supported the proposal, describing the firm as highly professional. The committee unanimously recommended engaging the firm to ensure transparency, accountability and better quality control. The committee stressed that Parliament projects must meet the highest standards because they are funded through public money. Members said timely completion, quality construction and proper use of funds would remain under strict parliamentary monitoring.
