Saudi Arabia and 13 other countries, including Pakistan, on Thursday announced the creation of a multinational maritime defence coalition aimed at safeguarding freedom of navigation, international trade and energy supply routes in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

The Saudi defence ministry said representatives from 43 countries and the European Union attended an international meeting that discussed the proposed coalition, with Saudi Arabia serving as its founding and leading state and hosting its headquarters. The ministry said the coalition would strengthen maritime security, safeguard freedom of navigation, secure international trade routes and energy supply lines, and protect shared maritime interests in the strategic waterways.

Fourteen countries, including Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, Sudan and Djibouti, issued a joint statement supporting the proposed coalition. Among the six Gulf Arab states, Oman and the United Arab Emirates were not listed among the countries backing the statement. The founding states said participation in the coalition’s activities would remain a sovereign decision for each member state, stressing that the alliance is “purely defensive in nature, does not target any state, alliance or international organization, and will conduct all its activities in full compliance with international law while respecting state sovereignty and protecting freedom of navigation.”

The joint statement said the coalition was established as a “framework for maritime defence cooperation” aimed at enhancing maritime security, protecting freedom of navigation, securing international trade and energy supply routes, and safeguarding interests in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

The announcement comes amid heightened tensions in the Red Sea, where Yemen’s Houthi rebels have launched a series of attacks on Saudi-linked shipping. Saudi Arabia has responded with air strikes on what it said were Houthi military facilities in Yemen’s Hodeidah used to threaten commercial shipping. The Red Sea tensions mark the latest front in the wider Iran war, with attacks on shipping spreading beyond the Gulf and pushing oil prices higher.

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, linking the southern Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, is a key maritime chokepoint for global trade and energy shipments. The European Union launched a naval mission in the Red Sea in 2024 to help restore and safeguard freedom of navigation after the Houthis disrupted maritime traffic by attacking vessels in what they said was solidarity with Palestinians during the Gaza war. The new Saudi-led coalition represents a significant expansion of international efforts to secure the region’s vital waterways.

The technology giant said revenue for the quarter ending in September is expected to grow between 9 and 11 percent compared with the same period last year. That forecast fell short of market expectations, which had predicted growth of around 12 percent. Apple also expects iPhone sales to increase at a mid teens rate, slightly below analysts’ forecasts. Chief Executive Tim Cook said the company’s biggest challenge is not weak demand but limited supplies of critical components. He explained that shortages of advanced chip manufacturing technology have reduced Apple’s ability to produce enough of its custom designed processors, especially for its Mac computers. Cook said the company is reviewing all possible options to secure additional supplies, including working with alternative memory chip suppliers. Apple’s Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh told investors that the company expects gross profit margins to remain between 47 and 48 percent during the current quarter. Although supply problems remain a concern, executives said demand for Apple products continues to be stronger than expected across several product categories. According to Cook, the company experienced particularly high demand for its Mac lineup during the recently completed fiscal third quarter. Sales of Mac computers rose by nearly 29 percent, driven by strong demand for the entry level MacBook Neo and the premium MacBook Pro models. Cook said the advanced chip manufacturing industry currently lacks the flexibility to respond quickly to unexpectedly high demand, making it difficult for Apple to increase production. Despite concerns about future growth, Apple reported financial results that exceeded most market expectations. Revenue for the fiscal third quarter, which ended on June 27, increased by 16.4 percent to 109.42 billion dollars. Net profit reached 2.02 dollars per share, including benefits from tariff refunds provided by the United States government. Even without those refunds, earnings remained above analysts’ expectations. The company’s strongest performance came from iPhone sales, which climbed 21.7 percent to 54.25 billion dollars. These were Apple’s highest ever third quarter iPhone sales, a period that usually experiences slower demand as customers wait for new models to be released later in the year. Analysts believe some consumers accelerated purchases because of concerns that future price increases could result from the global shortage of memory chips. Mac sales also exceeded expectations, reaching 10.35 billion dollars during the quarter. However, iPad sales declined by 5.9 percent to 6.19 billion dollars.     New CCTV footage has emerged in the investigation into the murder of Mir Raza Ali Khan, whose body was found in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar area two days after he went missing. The footage shows Mir Raza taking a firearm out of a drawer inside his home and placing it in his vehicle before leaving. He is then seen returning to the kitchen shortly afterward. Another CCTV clip recorded at 4:38am shows Mir Raza walking alone near the area where his body was later discovered. According to police, Mir Raza went missing on July 28 after leaving his home in PECHS. Investigators said he departed at 4:09am in an online taxi and was later found dead in Gulistan-e-Jauhar. Police said the victim was shot in the chest and his body was recovered in a severely mutilated condition. Investigators also revealed that all of his social media accounts had been deactivated a day before his body was found. Authorities have sought Mir Raza’s mobile phone records and data of people who were in contact with him before his disappearance. Police are also examining information obtained from the telecom company as part of the ongoing investigation. The driver of the ride-hailing taxi used by Mir Raza has also been questioned. In his statement, the driver told investigators that he dropped the victim near his destination in Gulistan-e-Jauhar before leaving. Earlier, police recovered Mir Raza’s mobile phone and a pistol holster from the crime scene, which are now being examined as evidence. Mir Raza’s father said his son was due to marry on August 30 at Bait-ul-Mukarram Mosque in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. He said Mir Raza was excited about starting a new chapter of his life, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking for the family.
