China tests giant fusion magnet

China has successfully tested the world’s largest fusion magnet weighing 582 tons marking a major step toward developing an “artificial sun.”

The technology aims to produce clean safe and nearly unlimited energy through nuclear fusion in the future.

The giant D-shaped superconducting magnet was developed by the Institute of Plasma Physics under the Chinese

Academy of Sciences. It is designed to control extremely hot plasma using powerful magnetic fields which is one of the most important parts of the nuclear fusion process.

The magnet measures 21 meters long and 12 meters wide and has been built for the world’s largest fusion reactor.

Reports say it is about 1.3 times larger than a similar magnet used in an international fusion project and can store three times more energy.

It is capable of containing plasma at temperatures of up to 100 million degrees Celsius allowing scientists to recreate the same fusion process that powers the Sun.

Chinese officials said most of the materials and manufacturing were completed within China reducing the country’s reliance on foreign technology and supplies.

China hopes to generate electricity from fusion energy by around 2030.

Scientists say an “artificial sun” is a nuclear fusion reactor that copies the natural process used by the Sun to produce energy.

If successful this technology could provide the world with a reliable source of clean and almost unlimited electricity in the future.

  • Scientists uncover clue behind Antarctica’s mysterious blood falls

    Scientists have uncovered an important clue about the source of the mysterious red water flowing from Antarctica’s famous Blood Falls in Taylor Valley. The iron-rich and crimson-coloured saline water has fascinated researchers for decades. While its red color has long been attributed to the iron it contains, a new study offers fresh insight into where the water originated. According to research published in the journal Nature Geoscience, scientists have found molecular and genetic evidence indicating that the salty water flowing from Blood Falls has a marine origin. The findings strengthen the long-standing theory that the water was once part of an ancient sea. Researchers collected and analyzed 167 samples of water, sediment and air from Blood Falls and the surrounding area. The study found that samples from Blood Falls contained 9 percent eukaryotic genetic signatures associated with marine environments compared with only about 1 percent in samples collected from nearby locations. According to the researchers, the new evidence strongly supports the theory that the water at Blood Falls originates from a reservoir of ancient seawater that became trapped beneath the Taylor Glacier millions of years ago. The researchers said the presence of strong marine genetic signatures in the red saline water provides evidence that an ancient marine ecosystem once existed there before becoming isolated beneath Antarctica’s thick ice sheet. Scientists believe this discovery could improve our understanding of how microscopic organisms survive in some of the harshest environments on Earth. The findings may also help researchers investigate the possibility of life beneath the icy surfaces of other worlds, including Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons and Enceladus, a moon of Saturn.

  • Tracing the spiritual legacy of “Nanak Se Nankana”

    In the fertile plains of Punjab lies a landscape quietly layered with centuries of devotion, miracle tales, and interfaith kinship. This sanctuary of green fields was known as Rai-Bhoi-Di-Talwandi. The time long before the bustling town of Nankana Sahib bore its current name. It was overseen by Rai Bhoi Bhatti, a local Muslim landlord whose family had influence over the region. Yet, history transitioned irreversibly in 1469. It was in this soil that Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, was born to Mehta Kalu and Mata Tripta. Rai Bular Bhatti (Rai Bhoi’s descendant) renamed the settlement Nankana Sahib in his honor. He was basically moved by the extraordinary spiritual wisdom radiating from the young child. Thus began a historical and spiritual trajectory known throughout the subcontinent as Nanak Se Nankana. The sacred evolution of a man into a timeless sanctuary. What makes Nankana Sahib uniquely enchanting is that the entire geography operates as a living storyboard. The city’s trees, fields, and lanes are strongly knitted  into local folklore. And each folklore is  marked by a Gurdwara commemorating young Nanak’s childhood and early enlightenment. Gurdwara Janam Asthan is the crown of the holy city. This magnificent marble compound stands at the site of Guru Nanak’s ancestral home. It was originally built as a small sanctum by his descendants. Later transformed into a grand complex surrounded by reflective Sarovars (holy pools) during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. According to popular regional legend, a young Nanak was sleeping out in the open pastures while tending to his father’s cattle. As the afternoon sun shifted, a large cobra slithered out and expanded its hood above his face to shade him from the blistering heat. Rai Bular Bhatti witnessed this miracle from his horse and then showed his devotion for Nanak. The ancient Jal (Mal) tree under which the event occurred still casts its shade today at Gurdwara Malji Sahib. Local folklore recalls a peasant complaining that Nanak’s roaming cattle had ruined his crops. Yet, when officials inspected the field, the damaged green stalks had miraculously grew back whole and undamaged. Gurdwara Kiara Sahib stands today atop that very field. When young Nanak returned from a nearby market town having spent his father’s money entirely on feeding hungry sadhus (Sacha Sauda or the True Bargain), he feared his father’s anger. He hid beneath a large, canopy-like tree whose drooping branches resembled a tent (tambu). Nearby stands Patti Sahib, where a seven-year-old Nanak astounded his teacher by writing an acrostic poem on the alphabet explaining divine truths instead of mere grammar. Beyond the miraculous legends of childhood, Nankana Sahib carries profound historical lore. It weathered the turbulent Sikh Empire era. The city witnessed the heroic sacrifices of the 1921 Akali Movement reform at Janam Asthan. It also survived the painful demographics shifts of the 1947 Partition. Today, the journey of Nanak Se Nankana remains an emotional pilgrimage. Every year during Gurpurab (Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary), thousands of pilgrims from across the globe cross borders to converge on these quiet lanes. The devotees step through the grand archways of Gurdwara Janam Asthan and touch the dust of Nankana to their foreheads. They aren’t just visiting a building. They are retracing a historical path that transformed a quiet Punjab meadow into a sanctuary of universal love, humility, and timeless unity.

According to reports leftover buffet food is usually divided into three groups. The first group includes food that was prepared in the kitchen but never placed on the buffet table. If it has been stored safely and kept at the correct temperature it may be used later. The second group is food that was displayed on the buffet. Even if it looks fresh it is usually thrown away after the buffet because it has been left out for too long increasing the risk of bacteria. The third group is food left on guests’ plates. This food is never reused and is always thrown away for health and safety reasons. Food safety experts explain that cooked food can become unsafe if it stays at room temperature for too long. That is why hotels often discard buffet food even when it still looks good. Some unused ingredients can be given a second purpose. For example fruits and vegetables that were never placed on the buffet may be used in soups smoothies desserts or jam.  Leftover bread can be turned into breadcrumbs or croutons. Many hotels around the world also donate safe, untouched food to charities and non profit organizations.  This helps provide meals to people in need while reducing food waste. Before donating hotels make sure the food is still safe to eat. Food that can no longer be eaten is sometimes used to make compost or biogas.  Compost turns food waste into natural fertilizer while biogas plants convert organic waste into energy helping protect the environment. Experts say modern hotels are also taking steps to reduce food waste.  They prepare food more carefully study guest eating habits use artificial intelligence and data to predict demand and refill buffet trays only when needed instead of filling them all at once. Guests can also help reduce waste by taking only the amount of food they can finish and going back for more if needed. Although hotel policies and local laws differ from country to country the hotel industry is making greater efforts to reduce food waste maintain high food safety standards and support environmentally friendly practices.

    Across the tropical islands of Java and Bali, coconut and palm leaves have bound together daily life and spiritual practice for centuries. They include janur (young, pale yellow coconut fronds) and slepan (mature green fronds). These pliable natural fibers have traditionally been folded, sliced, and pinned into delicate ritual offerings. They are a part of canang sari, ornate wedding arches, and festive penjor poles that line village streets. For decades, this intricate craft was widely viewed as a transient household chore or a necessity of ceremonial duty. It was something crafted quickly, admired briefly, and discarded once dried. As younger generations moved toward urban centers and sought modern corporate or tech jobs, the deep knowledge of palm foliage design faced the quiet threat of stagnation. Today, a vibrant revival is underway. A new generation of Indonesian artisans, designers, and environmentalists is taking up leaf weaving. These crafties are reimagining this ancestral skill not merely as a folk tradition, but as a medium for sustainable architecture. The shift began when forward-thinking young crafters began asking a simple question. What if the humble palm leaf could transcend its flat, two-dimensional boundaries? Artisans such as Balinese weaver Ida Bagus Gede Ari Artana (famously known as Gus Ari) began pushing the physical limits of palm leaves. He experimented with twisting, interlacing, and tension-weaving techniques. Crafters transformed flat sheets (klangsah) into expansive 3D installations. As a result, collaborations like Make a Scene Bali, co-founded by Gus Ari and British stage designer Chloe Quinn happened. They brought international theatrical design principles into harmony with native Javanese and Balinese weaving traditions. Instead of tiny ritual baskets, young weavers are now constructing colossal mythological creatures, archways, floating pavilion interiors, stage backdrops, and even high-fashion wearable art and jewelry crafted from dried lontar leaves. These breathtaking installations have graced international platforms. For instance, the G20 Summit held in Bali, where sustainable leaf sculptures of native sea turtles and dragons greeted world leaders. Beyond aesthetic innovation, the youth-driven resurgence of leaf weaving is rooted in environmental activism. Over recent decades, the event and hospitality industries in Southeast Asia grew increasingly dependent on single-use plastics, styrofoam, and non-recyclable synthetic decorations. The movement to revive leaf weaving offers a completely biodegradable, zero-waste alternative. Young coconut fronds are harvested sustainably from local trees without harming the palm. The raw material is renewable, abundant, and locally sourced. Once an event or exhibition concludes, the entire installation can be composted back into the soil. The activism embodies a circular design ethos that resonates with modern eco-conscious consumers and international art curators alike. Perhaps the most significant impact of this movement is economic and cultural. Historically, local crafters have struggled to command fair compensation for traditional foliage work because the raw material was viewed as inexpensive. Now, there’s a promotion of leaf weaving to structural art and luxury event design. Young creative studios are proving that the value resides in the artisan’s vision, precision, and hours of practiced labor. This shift has boosted local earning potential and inspired young men and women across rural communities to remain in their homelands. They are earning sustainable livings while keeping their heritage alive. The palm frond art captures global attention. Alongside, Indonesia’s younger generation is demonstrating that tradition does not have to be frozen in a museum. Rather, it can grow, adapt, and weave a sustainable future for art and community.      

  • From barren land to a garden of love

    A simple comment from his wife inspired a Chinese man to transform a barren valley into a huge garden filled with colorful flowers. The 80-acre valley is located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province China. Today it has become a beautiful flower filled home for Zhao Xiaolin and his wife, Yin Zai. A promise inspired by his wife Zhao got the idea in 2013 when his wife talked about her childhood memories in Beijing and shared how much she loved flowers. Her words inspired him to create a garden where she could enjoy flowers every day. He promised to turn the idea into reality. He had no gardening experience Zhao had no professional experience in gardening. Despite this, he sold his home bought land in a town called Zhuanlong and began learning how to grow flowers on his own. Over the years he collected seeds from different parts of China and other countries. He continued working on the land for more than a decade. From empty land to a flower paradise After years of hard work Zhao completely changed the landscape.  The area is now being described as one of the world’s largest hollyhock flower gardens. The garden is open to the public and contains more than 700 varieties of hollyhocks.  It is also home to around 150,000 lilies and 100,000 Chinese hibiscus plants. A love story that lasted 35 years Zhao says his wife and flowers are the two most important things that make his life beautiful. The couple has been married for 35 years and does not have children. They now share their life with several cats and dogs. Even after all these years they continue to exchange handwritten letters on birthdays and other special occasions. What started as a simple conversation about flowers eventually became a remarkable garden and a lasting symbol of their love.
