MIT robot can fly and swim

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created a unique robot that can both fly through the air and swim underwater just like diving birds.

The lightweight robot costs around $300 and was designed by MIT’s AeroAquatic Robotics team.  Scientists believe it could one day help monitor oceans study marine life and support environmental protection.

The robot was inspired by diving birds which use the same wings to fly in the air and move through water.  While scientists have studied these birds for years building a robot that can perform both tasks efficiently has been a major challenge.

To solve this the MIT team carefully studied how diving birds move and used those findings to design the new machine.

The robot called the Flapping Aerial Aquatic Vehicle weighs only 250 grams.  It runs on a battery powered motor and has nylon wings and a tail coated with water resistant nanoparticles to protect them from moisture.

According to the researchers the robot is programmed to flap its wings at a specific frequency allowing it to move smoothly in both air and water without changing its basic movement.

It can fly at speeds of up to 13.4 miles per hour and swim at about 2.2 miles per hour. On a single battery charge it is designed to fly as far as 6 kilometers or swim up to 2 kilometers.

The robot was tested for about one year first in a water tank in Massachusetts and later in Lake Geneva Switzerland where researchers evaluated its performance in real world conditions.

Before opening a battery or adding anything to it check its type and read the manufacturer’s instructions.     A new study by researchers at the University of Oxford suggests that producing organic and free range eggs may have a greater impact on the environment than eggs produced by hens kept in conventional cage systems. According to the research if all egg production switched to organic and free range farming carbon emissions could increase by about 60%. The amount of land needed for egg production would also nearly double. The researchers estimated that producing only organic and free range eggs would release around 2.316 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gases. In comparison producing eggs only from caged hens would generate about 1.184 million tonnes. The study explains that while organic and free range systems are often considered better for animal welfare they require more hens to produce the same number of eggs.  This is because hens kept in cage systems generally lay eggs more efficiently. Researchers also warned that organic and free range farming may require more land and could have a greater impact on water pollution. The study’s lead author, Dr. Harriet Bartlett said that future decisions about egg production should carefully balance three important factors animal welfare environmental impact and the need to produce enough food.

    Spanish pastry chef Marc Suarez has created an extraordinary wedding cake for a Saudi royal family.  The giant cake stands 3.5 meters tall is 1.8 meters wide and weighs around 500 kilograms. Although he normally works alone this huge project required help from several pastry chef friends their families and other people close to him. Thousands of handmade flowers One of the biggest challenges was creating and coloring around 33,000 flower petals.  Each petal had to be carefully prepared and placed with branches and flowers to create the final design. Friends family members and others also helped with the detailed work. Suarez said the project required around 1,800 hours of work in total. The finished cake looks less like a traditional wedding cake and more like a large piece of art that could be displayed in a museum. A grand wedding in paris The enormous cake was presented at the Paris Opera Garnier during the wedding of a Saudi couple. The bride and groom chose to keep their identities private but their wedding featured a cake that was certainly difficult to forget.     A new study suggests that a blood cleaning treatment used to lower cholesterol may also help remove harmful “forever chemicals” from the body. The treatment called apheresis is mainly used for people whose high cholesterol cannot be controlled with medication.  During the procedure blood is taken from one arm and passed through a special filter that removes excess fats. The cleaned blood is then returned to the body through the other arm. At the Technical University of Dresden in Germany, home to one of the world’s largest apheresis centers around 10,000 of these treatments are performed each year. For the study researchers examined used filter bags from the apheresis machines to see what substances had been removed along with cholesterol. They wanted to find out whether the filters could also remove harmful forever chemicals toxic substances that remain in the environment and the human body for a very long time as well as tiny plastic particles known as microplastics. The researchers say the early findings are promising. If future studies confirm these results apheresis could become a useful way to reduce the amount of certain harmful pollutants in the body in addition to lowering cholesterol.

  • SpaceX’s 4-ton rocket crashes into Moon at 5,400mph

    Elon Musk’s SpaceX rocket has crashed into the Moon’s surface while travelling at a speed of 5,400 miles per hour while a telescope in Chile captured evidence of the impact. The European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope observed the impact on August 5 and detected colorful spectral lines of sodium and lithium gas. These were produced by clouds of lunar dust that were thrown up by the impact. The ESO telescope recorded the “chemical fingerprints” of the gas cloud which remained visible for around 5 to 10 minutes. The cloud was estimated to extend across dozens of kilometers. Experts had previously said that the impact could provide valuable data for future space experiments and help scientists analyze the effects of collisions involving human-made space debris. As NASA plans to establish a permanent human base on the Moon in the future understanding what happens when space debris strikes the lunar surface will be important. Impact site The impact occurred at a location on the Moon that is considered to be near the boundary between the sunlit and dark regions. When the impact sent clouds of dust into the air, they briefly became illuminated by sunlight. However, observing them with the naked eye from Earth was almost impossible. Although several satellites are currently orbiting the Moon, none was positioned at the time of the impact to directly observe it. The rocket fragment was approximately as tall as a five-story building and weighed around 4 tons. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and South Korea’s Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter are being considered for photographing the impact site. These images could help determine how much damage was caused by the rocket although it may take several days to collect and analyze the information. It is worth noting that the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was launched in January 2025 and carried two landers toward the Moon. Its boosters returned to Earth while the upper stage continued carrying the landers toward the Moon.
