MIT robot can fly and swim

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created a unique robot that can both fly through the air and swim underwater just like diving birds.

The lightweight robot costs around $300 and was designed by MIT’s AeroAquatic Robotics team.  Scientists believe it could one day help monitor oceans study marine life and support environmental protection.

The robot was inspired by diving birds which use the same wings to fly in the air and move through water.  While scientists have studied these birds for years building a robot that can perform both tasks efficiently has been a major challenge.

To solve this the MIT team carefully studied how diving birds move and used those findings to design the new machine.

The robot called the Flapping Aerial Aquatic Vehicle weighs only 250 grams.  It runs on a battery powered motor and has nylon wings and a tail coated with water resistant nanoparticles to protect them from moisture.

According to the researchers the robot is programmed to flap its wings at a specific frequency allowing it to move smoothly in both air and water without changing its basic movement.

It can fly at speeds of up to 13.4 miles per hour and swim at about 2.2 miles per hour. On a single battery charge it is designed to fly as far as 6 kilometers or swim up to 2 kilometers.

The robot was tested for about one year first in a water tank in Massachusetts and later in Lake Geneva Switzerland where researchers evaluated its performance in real world conditions.

When I first arrived in China from Pakistan, I expected to encounter advanced technology, modern cities, and world-class universities. Those expectations were quickly fulfilled. What I did not anticipate was how naturally tradition and innovation would coexist in everyday life. At Yanshan University, I discovered that China’s progress is not defined by replacing its past but by building upon it. Every day offers new evidence that preserving cultural identity and embracing innovation are not opposing goals—they are complementary forces shaping the country’s future. Walking across campus, I often see students reading beneath ancient-style pavilions before entering laboratories equipped with cutting-edge technology.     Cleaning windows may seem like a simple job but doing it at a world class level takes years of skill and practice. That is why 71 year old Terry Burrows is still considered one of the best professional window cleaners in the world. Speaking to a British newspaper Burrows said that many people half his age cannot do what he does.  He explained that professional window cleaning is a skill that requires proper training not just hard work. Burrows who still competes in the Window Cleaning World Cup is often called the “Usain Bolt of window cleaning.” In 2009 he set a world record by cleaning three 45×45 inch windows in just 9.14 seconds.  His record remains unbeaten. Under competition rules every contestant uses the same equipment including a 12-inch squeegee a 14-inch T-bar an applicator cover a bucket of water window cleaning detergent and a scrim cloth. Competitors must clean all three windows as quickly and perfectly as possible. During the event three judges watch closely as contestants use a special S-shaped squeegee technique. They then wipe away any remaining marks with a scrim cloth before shouting “Stop” which ends their time. Even after 17 years no professional window cleaner has managed to break Terry Burrows remarkable world record.

    Japan launches cooling shirt with built-in fans

    Tokyo – Due to Japan’s intense summer heat, office wear is now being equipped with modern cooling technology. Japanese people have started wearing clothes with built-in air-conditioning systems. Japanese clothing manufacturer Yofuku no Aoyama has introduced a short-sleeved shirt fitted with two small fans that provide cool air to the wearer while they are on the move. According to media reports, the shirt looks like a simple and elegant office shirt but it actually contains an advanced cooling system. A fan is installed at the back of the shirt near the waist. When switched on, it circulates air inside the shirt and helps keep the body cool. Air-cooled clothing has become increasingly popular in Japan over the past few years. However, it has mainly been used by people working in construction, waste collection and event security. Such clothing is generally designed as jackets or vests and has traditionally been considered protective or workwear rather than office clothing. However, as summer temperatures continue to rise in Japan, demand for cooling clothing is increasing among ordinary citizens and office workers as well. Keeping this growing demand in mind, Yofuku no Aoyama developed the shirt in collaboration with FZN, a company specializing in fan-equipped clothing. The shirt comes with two fans and a rechargeable battery. According to the company, efforts have been made to keep the cooling system as lightweight as possible. According to the report, each of the two fans weighs 95 grams, while the rechargeable battery pack weighs 165 grams. Although the fans are visible when the shirt is viewed from the back, designers have tried to make them less noticeable from other angles so that the shirt remains suitable for an office environment. The company has not provided specific information about the noise level of the fans suggesting that they may not be completely silent. When is cooling shirt most useful? The shirt is considered more useful while travelling rather than during meetings. The company says its main purpose is not necessarily to operate the fans inside an office or during client meetings as such meetings are generally held in air-conditioned rooms. The real benefit of the shirt is for people who travel around the city from one meeting to another. While walking outside in extreme heat or using public transport, the fans can help keep the body cool. It may also reduce the need for employees to change sweat-soaked clothes and put on formal attire again after reaching their destination. What is price? The complete initial package of the Kuchou Wear Short-Sleeve Shirt is being sold for 17,490 Japanese yen. The package includes the shirt, two fans, a rechargeable battery pack and a charging cable. The shirt is available in blue and grey with medium, large and extra-large sizes offered. The product has already gone on sale at the company’s stores and online shop.
