Blood treatment removes forever chemicals

A new study suggests that a blood cleaning treatment used to lower cholesterol may also help remove harmful “forever chemicals” from the body.

The treatment called apheresis is mainly used for people whose high cholesterol cannot be controlled with medication.  During the procedure blood is taken from one arm and passed through a special filter that removes excess fats.

The cleaned blood is then returned to the body through the other arm. At the Technical University of Dresden in Germany, home to one of the world’s largest apheresis centers around 10,000 of these treatments are performed each year.

For the study researchers examined used filter bags from the apheresis machines to see what substances had been removed along with cholesterol.

They wanted to find out whether the filters could also remove harmful forever chemicals toxic substances that remain in the environment and the human body for a very long time as well as tiny plastic particles known as microplastics.

The researchers say the early findings are promising. If future studies confirm these results apheresis could become a useful way to reduce the amount of certain harmful pollutants in the body in addition to lowering cholesterol.

    Millions of people around the world struggle with insomnia and other sleep problems. Now scientists in China have identified a natural brain molecule that may help explain how the body knows when it is time to sleep. The discovery could lead to safer and more effective sleep medicines in the future. The study published in Nature Neuroscience found that a natural molecule called tryptamine (TrpA) plays an important role in increasing the body’s need for sleep. Researchers say this molecule sends signals to the brain that it is time to rest. Experts explained that good sleep is essential for overall health. During sleep the brain organizes memories stores information and removes waste that builds up during the day. However many people do not get enough sleep because of insomnia stress depression anxiety or problems with the body’s internal clock also known as the circadian rhythm. To better understand the process researchers studied mice which are active at night and pigs which are active during the day. Using a special fluorescent sensor they measured the amount of tryptamine in the animals’ cerebrospinal fluid at different times. The scientists found that the longer the animals stayed awake the higher their tryptamine levels became. This suggests that the molecule reflects the body’s natural “sleep pressure” the growing need for sleep after spending many hours awake. The team also discovered that active nerve cells release tryptamine while the body is awake. The molecule then attaches to a receptor called GPR139 which activates sleep promoting nerve cells in an area of the brain known as the hypothalamic preoptic area. In the next stage of the study researchers tested experimental compounds that activated the GPR139 receptor. The results showed that the animals slept longer and experienced better quality sleep. Scientists say finding the same results in both mice and pigs suggests that this biological system may also exist in humans. If future studies confirm this the discovery could help develop new treatments for insomnia and other sleep disorders that are safer more effective and have fewer side effects than many current sleep medications.

The research published in the Journal of Family Studies looked at how becoming a parent changes health and daily habits including exercise and smoking. The study found that becoming a father has little effect on men’s overall health before or after the birth of a child. However the situation is different for women. Researchers found that a mother’s age and the number of children she has can influence her health. Women with only one child or those whose children have reached their teenage years were more likely to experience symptoms of depression. On the other hand mothers with two or more young children were generally found to have better overall health. The biggest lifestyle change was seen in physical activity.  Mothers were much less likely to exercise than fathers. According to the study only 16% of mothers with young children exercise regularly while men’s exercise habits remain almost the same whether they have children or not. Researchers believe this is because mothers spend much more time caring for their children leaving them with less time to look after their own health. As a result their physical and mental well being may be affected.

In Pakistan, public confidence in the health sector has weakened due to persistent challenges, including shortages of healthcare professionals, rising medicine prices, under-resourced hospitals, and the continued presence of unqualified medical practitioners. These issues require comprehensive and long-term reforms rather than short-term policy responses Healthcare is a fundamental right closely linked to Article 9 of Pakistan’s Constitution, which guarantees the right to life. The Supreme Court has interpreted this provision to include access to essential healthcare services. Pakistan is also a signatory to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which commits the country to progressively ensuring the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health for its citizens. One of the most pressing concerns is the shortage of qualified doctors in rural and underserved regions. Although medical institutions produce thousands of graduates every year, many public health facilities outside major cities continue to face vacant positions. As a result, many communities struggle to obtain even basic healthcare services and are often forced to travel long distances for treatment. The migration of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to foreign countries has further weakened the healthcare system. Better salaries, improved working conditions, career opportunities, and greater security abroad encourage many skilled professionals to leave Pakistan, creating significant gaps in public hospitals and specialized medical services. The pharmaceutical sector also faces increasing challenges. Some multinational pharmaceutical companies have reduced their presence in Pakistan, raising concerns about future medicine availability and investor confidence. While local pharmaceutical manufacturers continue to meet much of the country’s demand, policymakers must create a stable regulatory and economic environment that supports both domestic production and responsible international investment. The rising cost of medicines has become another major burden for families already affected by inflation. Patients suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases often require lifelong treatment, making affordability a growing concern. At the same time, the continued circulation of counterfeit and substandard medicines highlights weaknesses in regulation and quality control, despite improvements in oversight by regulatory authorities. Public hospitals also frequently experience shortages of essential medicines and emergency supplies, forcing patients to purchase drugs from private pharmacies. This increases treatment costs and can delay critical medical care during emergencies. Ensuring uninterrupted medicine supplies in government hospitals should remain a national priority. Another persistent issue is the presence of unqualified medical practitioners, commonly known as quacks, particularly in areas where licensed healthcare providers are scarce. Tackling this problem requires stronger enforcement of existing laws alongside improved access to qualified medical professionals. Pakistan’s healthcare challenges extend beyond these issues to include inadequate public health funding, ageing hospital infrastructure, weak primary healthcare services, limited mental health facilities, and uneven implementation of health policies across provinces. Addressing these problems requires a comprehensive national strategy focused on increasing healthcare investment, improving working conditions for medical professionals, strengthening medicine regulation, modernizing pharmaceutical oversight, expanding preventive care, and reinforcing primary healthcare services. Investing in healthcare is not merely a public expense—it is an investment in human capital, economic growth, and national development. Pakistan possesses skilled healthcare professionals, reputable medical institutions, and a capable pharmaceutical industry. With sound policymaking, stronger governance, and sustained investment, these strengths can be transformed into a healthcare system that guarantees every citizen safe, affordable, and quality healthcare. The need for reform is no longer in question; the real challenge is ensuring that action is not delayed any further.

    A new scientific study has highlighted that body fat is much more than a source of extra weight. Researchers say fat tissue functions as an essential organ that helps regulate metabolism, stores energy, and produces hormones needed for the body’s normal functioning. According to the researchers, while excessive body fat is widely associated with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, having too little body fat can also pose serious health risks. The findings suggest that maintaining a healthy balance of body fat is important for overall metabolic health. The study focused on a rare inherited disorder known as Familial Partial Lipodystrophy Type 2 (FPLD2). People with this condition lose fat from specific parts of the body or experience abnormal fat distribution, increasing their risk of diabetes and other metabolic disorders. A research team led by American endocrinologist Dr. Elif Oral examined patients with the condition and found that affected fat cells develop significant structural and functional abnormalities. These changes can disrupt the body’s metabolism and contribute to a range of health complications. To better understand the disease, scientists created a mouse model in which the Lamin A/C gene was switched off only in fat cells. This is the same gene known to be affected in individuals with FPLD2. The model allowed researchers to closely examine how defects in fat tissue influence the body’s metabolic processes. Researchers believe the findings could improve understanding of rare fat disorders while also opening new avenues for the development of treatments for diabetes and other metabolic diseases. The study reinforces the idea that healthy fat tissue plays a vital role in maintaining the body’s balance and overall well-being.
