Parliament should focus on Pakistan’s real c…

Pakistan is an Islamic republic whose Constitution defines not only the structure of the state but also its ideological foundation. It explicitly states that the country should create an environment in which Muslims can live their lives in accordance with the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah.

Against this constitutional backdrop, it is surprising that the issue of women wearing the abaya—or an Islamic financial institution including the abaya in its employee dress code—has become a matter of concern for a parliamentary committee. This naturally raises an important question: Who is setting the country’s priorities, and are these truly the issues that deserve Parliament’s attention?

Pakistan continues to face pressing challenges, including rising inflation, unemployment, an unequal tax system, a struggling economy, and serious shortcomings in education and healthcare. These are the issues that directly affect the daily lives of millions of citizens. If a parliamentary standing committee, whose primary responsibility is financial oversight, chooses to focus instead on the dress code of Islamic banks, it is reasonable for the public to question whether legislative priorities are aligned with the country’s most urgent needs.

The debate also raises questions about consistency. Critics have objected to the abaya as part of an institutional dress code, yet there is little discussion about uniforms in many government departments that follow Western styles of dress. Women serving in the police, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and several other public institutions are commonly required to wear trousers and shirts as part of their official uniforms. If clothing is to become a matter of parliamentary debate, then similar standards should apply across the board. Selective criticism can create the perception of bias.

Supporters of Islamic dress codes argue that the issue extends beyond clothing itself and reflects broader concerns about cultural and religious identity. From this perspective, the concern is not simply about the abaya but about a mindset that views visible expressions of religious identity as obstacles to modernization. They question whether institutions with an Islamic identity should be expected to abandon their traditions in the name of progress.

This leads to a broader debate: Who defines what it means to be modern? Does modernization necessarily require reducing the public expression of religious values or adopting Western cultural norms? For institutions operating within Pakistan’s Islamic banking framework, supporters argue that their identity is rooted not only in financial principles but also in ethical and religious values. If such institutions adopt internal policies that comply with Pakistani law and reflect constitutional and religious principles, they contend that those choices should be respected.

The discussion also draws comparisons with international examples. In countries such as France, restrictions on religious clothing have generated significant criticism from human rights advocates. Supporters of religious freedom argue that Pakistan, which was established with a distinct religious and cultural identity, should carefully consider whether adopting similar approaches is consistent with its own constitutional framework and historical foundations.

Ultimately, the central argument is that Parliament should devote its time and resources to addressing issues that directly affect governance, economic stability, and public welfare. Matters of personal attire, religious belief, and institutional identity, many argue, should not become subjects of unnecessary official intervention when the country faces far more pressing social and economic challenges.

Pralhad Joshi named India’s new education minister

India’s Union Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi has been given the additional responsibility of the Education Ministry. The development comes after the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan. His resignation was accepted by the Indian president, according to an official notification. The notification also confirmed Joshi’s appointment to the additional portfolio. He will continue to handle his existing responsibilities while overseeing the Education Ministry. Speaking to journalists after the appointment, Joshi said he accepted the new responsibility with humility and a strong sense of duty. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for placing his trust in him. Joshi also praised the Modi government’s performance during its 12 years in power. He said the government had achieved several important milestones during this period. He added that the education sector had also witnessed major developments. Joshi acknowledged the work carried out by Pradhan during his tenure as education minister. He said Pradhan had played an important role in implementing India’s National Education Policy. According to Joshi, several significant initiatives were introduced during the previous four to five years. He also said India had made considerable progress in moving towards a new education system. Joshi pledged to carry out his new duties with dedication. He said he would use his abilities to fulfil the responsibilities assigned to him. The change at the Education Ministry follows weeks of student protests across India. The demonstrations were linked to allegations of examination paper leaks and irregularities. Students had demanded action from the authorities and greater accountability within the education system. Pradhan submitted his resignation on the 35th day of the protests. The 57-year-old minister stepped down as pressure continued to grow over the controversy. The protests were largely driven by young people. Their campaign gained significant attention through social media and public demonstrations. Pradhan’s resignation was subsequently welcomed by the protesters, who had made his removal one of their major demands. The leadership change now places Joshi at the centre of efforts to address the concerns surrounding India’s education and examination system. His immediate responsibilities are expected to include overseeing the ministry’s ongoing programmes and ensuring continuity in the implementation of education policies. The new minister will also face pressure to respond to concerns raised by students over examination procedures, transparency and accountability.

  • Why are young bodybuilders dying so early

Brazilian bodybuilder and fitness influencer Melson Araujo recently shared a gym photo showing his impressive physique. Just a few hours later the 35 year old reportedly became ill at home and died suddenly. The exact cause of his death has not been officially confirmed. However his passing has added to growing concerns about the number of young bodybuilders who have died unexpectedly in recent years. Earlier this year 22 year old Brazilian bodybuilder Gabriel Ganley also died after suffering sudden cardiac arrest. In 2024, two other Brazilian bodybuilders in their 30s and 40s also died from heart related problems including one who collapsed during a competition. Similar cases have been reported around the world. American bodybuilder Dallas McCarver died in 2017 at the age of 26, while German fitness influencer Jo Lindner passed away in 2023 at the age of 30. These deaths have raised an important question. why are some people who appear extremely fit and healthy dying at a young age? A 2025 study published in the European Heart Journal examined nearly 20,000 amateur and professional bodybuilders who competed between 2005 and 2020. Researchers found that professional bodybuilders were more than five times more likely to die from sudden cardiac arrest than amateur competitors. The study recorded 121 deaths including 46 caused by sudden cardiac arrest. The average age at death was 45 years but for active competitors it was only 34.7 years. Researchers believe several factors may increase the risk, including the use of performance enhancing drugs rapid weight loss before competitions and extremely intense strength training. Another 2025 study from Denmark published in the journal Circulation followed 1,189 men who used anabolic steroids and compared them with nearly 60,000 men over 11 years. The researchers found that steroid users had a nine times higher risk of developing cardiomyopathy a disease that weakens the heart muscle. They also had about three times the risk of heart attack and heart failure. Experts say anabolic steroids may also raise blood pressure speed up the build up of plaque in the arteries and change the structure of the heart. Autopsy reports from several bodybuilders have shown that many had enlarged hearts and thicker heart walls especially in the left ventricle. These changes can increase the risk of dangerous heart rhythm problems and heart failure. One of the best known cases was Dallas McCarver, whose heart weighed 833 grams more than twice the normal weight of an adult male heart. A 2022 review also found that many American bodybuilders had hearts that were much larger and thicker than normal. In some cases even athletes in their 20s showed enlarged hearts thickened heart muscles, and serious coronary artery disease.

US launches strikes on Iran after attack on Jordan base

WASHINGTON/TEHRAN: Tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply escalated after Washington launched strikes against Iranian targets following a ballistic missile attack on a US military base in Jordan. US Central Command said its forces began the strikes at around 8pm Eastern Time on Wednesday. CENTCOM described the operation as a “powerful response” to attempted attacks against American forces in the Middle East. The strikes came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for operations targeting US military assets in Jordan. The IRGC said it had targeted an airbase and a command centre. US President Donald Trump had earlier warned that Iran would face a strong military response. Trump said the United States would hit Iran “very hard” after the attack, despite reports that US forces had intercepted the missiles. The latest developments have raised fears of a wider regional conflict. Military activity has also been reported across southern Iran. Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported explosions in Bushehr province, home to the country’s only nuclear power plant. Several explosions were also reported on Qeshm Island. Iranian media said a missile may have struck a residential area, although details about casualties were not immediately available. Other explosions were reported at several locations in southern Iran following the launch of the US operation. The conflict has also intensified around Iraq. Baghdad condemned US and Saudi strikes that reportedly killed members of Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces. The group said at least 20 of its fighters were killed and 32 others were wounded. Iranian media separately reported that four Iranian advisers were killed in the strikes. The situation around the Strait of Hormuz has also become increasingly tense. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said its naval forces targeted three oil tankers that were allegedly approaching the strategic waterway using routes not approved by Tehran. Iran has rejected an Omani proposal concerning shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has also discussed imposing charges on vessels using the strategically important passage. Iranian officials have insisted that mine-clearing operations in the waterway should be carried out by Iranian forces. Tehran has warned that any European involvement could turn those forces into potential targets. The latest escalation comes only days after Trump said Washington was holding what he described as positive talks with Iran. He had also warned that military action could resume if Tehran failed to show seriousness in negotiations. Analysts have warned that continued retaliation could create a dangerous cycle of escalation. They say repeated strikes could eventually expand beyond military targets and increase the risk to civilians and critical infrastructure.

Polling in the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections was extended by one hour on Monday. Voting in Bhimber, Mirpur and Kotli continued until 6pm. The extension was announced as several polling stations faced disruptions and complaints. Political parties also raised concerns about alleged interference and security issues during the voting process. The first phase of the AJK elections covers all 13 constituencies of Mirpur Division. The division includes four seats in Mirpur, three in Bhimber and six in Kotli. More than 1.4 million registered voters are eligible to cast their votes in the first phase. Election authorities established 2,454 polling stations and 3,701 polling booths across the division. Around 22,000 election officials were assigned duties to manage the polling process. Security was also increased at polling stations across the region. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) raised several complaints during the day. PPP AJK Election Cell in-charge Sardar Abdul Shakoor called on the Election Commission to take immediate notice of disruptions at polling stations. Polling at Station 108 in LA-13 Kotli-VI was reportedly suspended for around two hours. Shakoor said the interruption was affecting voters and preventing them from exercising their right to vote. He demanded that polling be restored immediately. He also called for an investigation into the reasons behind the suspension. The PPP also alleged interference at several polling stations in LA-8 Raj Mahal and LA-12 Charhoi. The party claimed that some PML-N supporters were attempting to influence the polling process. The allegations included the presence of armed individuals near some polling stations. The PPP demanded stronger security arrangements to protect voters, polling staff and election material. Another serious incident was reported in LA-9 Nikyal. A PPP worker was killed during an incident that the party linked to alleged intimidation and the display of weapons. PPP officials identified the deceased as 35-year-old Mukhtar Younus. The party demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the incident. Shakoor alleged that weapons had been displayed in the area before polling day. He claimed that timely action by the authorities could have prevented the situation from worsening. The PPP also accused the federal government of interfering in the AJK elections. PPP Secretary General Nadeem Afzal Chan demanded that federal officials and government machinery remain neutral during the electoral process. He said political parties should be allowed to compete without outside interference. Chan also raised concerns over alleged use of state resources during the election campaign. He called for development announcements and other government activities that could influence voters to be stopped during the election period. The PPP has established an election monitoring cell in Islamabad. Senior party leaders are monitoring polling-related complaints through the cell. The monitoring team is also maintaining contact with election officials, district administrations, candidates and party representatives. The PPP said the purpose of the cell was to monitor the election process and report any violations. Meanwhile, the Election Commission took action against two presiding officers in Kotli. The officials were accused of failing to report to their assigned polling stations. They allegedly went to a private residence instead. An FIR was registered against both officials. They were arrested and later suspended from service. Election authorities said strict action would be taken against officials who violate election rules. They also warned that negligence and irregularities in the polling process would not be tolerated. Security remained a major focus during polling. Authorities declared 1,965 polling stations sensitive or highly sensitive. More than 19,000 security personnel were deployed across Mirpur Division. The force included around 17,000 police personnel. Around 2,100 Army personnel were also kept on standby. They could be deployed as a backup force if the security situation deteriorated. Despite the complaints and isolated incidents, polling continued at most stations. In LA-1 Dadyal, voting began in a peaceful atmosphere. Security arrangements were strengthened around all polling stations in the constituency. More than 105,000 voters are registered in Dadyal. The constituency has 139 polling stations and 234 polling booths. The first phase of the elections is being held under a revised schedule. Polling in Muzaffarabad Division and the 12 refugee constituencies is scheduled for August 2. The final phase will be held in Poonch Division on August 10. A total of 288 candidates are contesting the 13 seats in Mirpur Division. Election authorities have urged candidates, workers and voters to maintain peace and follow the electoral code of conduct.

Why is the risk of an India-China clash rising in …

Tensions along the India-China border remain a major security concern, particularly in Arunachal Pradesh despite recent efforts by both countries to improve relations and maintain peace along their disputed frontier. India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Kumar Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently held talks in Beijing on the long-running border dispute. The meeting marked the 25th round of discussions between the two countries special representatives on the boundary issue. Following the talks China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Wang Yi emphasized the importance of stable relations between China and India. He described the two countries as important neighbours and emerging economies arguing that improved and stable bilateral relations are in the fundamental interests of both populations. According to the Chinese statement Wang called for a strategic and long-term approach to bilateral relations stronger communication and efforts to reduce differences. He also urged both sides to remove obstacles and promote cooperation as good neighbours and friendly partners. Doval also struck a conciliatory tone during the discussions. According to the Chinese statement he said India and China are ancient civilizations with large populations and important economies adding that the two countries should be viewed as partners rather than rivals. Doval reportedly said that under the guidance of the leadership of both countries India-China relations had returned to the right track. He also said overall peace had been maintained in border areas and that exchanges and cooperation in several fields were making progress. However, the disputed border remains a sensitive issue. Arunachal Pradesh is particularly important because China claims large parts of the Indian-administered territory and refers to the region as “Zangnan” or southern Tibet. India firmly rejects China’s territorial claims and considers Arunachal Pradesh an integral part of the country. The two sides have previously experienced serious confrontations along the Line of Actual Control making border management and military deployments highly sensitive. During the latest talks both sides discussed advancing negotiations on boundary demarcation strengthening border management mechanisms improving procedures and expanding cross-border cooperation. Although the latest diplomatic engagement indicates that both countries are seeking to prevent further escalation unresolved territorial claims and military activity continue to create the possibility of confrontation. The key challenge for India and China will be to maintain dialogue while managing their competing territorial claims and preventing local disputes from developing into a broader military crisis.

Argentina under FIFA scrutiny for World Cup 2026 misconduct

FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against Argentina following a series of incidents that allegedly took place during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including player misconduct, political displays, crowd behavior, and security-related concerns. According to reports, several Argentine players and officials are under investigation for their conduct during the tournament, while the Argentine Football Association is also facing scrutiny over alleged breaches of FIFA regulations. One of the key incidents under review occurred during the World Cup final, where Argentine players were involved in an on-field altercation with Spain’s players after the match. The confrontation has led FIFA to investigate the actions of multiple individuals associated with the Argentine team. Midfielder Leandro Paredes is reportedly facing three separate disciplinary cases over his alleged involvement in the post-match clash. Defender Nahuel Molina is the subject of two disciplinary cases, while assistant coach Roberto Ayala is also under investigation in connection with the same incident. In addition, Thiago Almada is expected to face disciplinary action over allegations of inappropriate conduct during the tournament. Apart from the final, FIFA is also examining incidents that occurred after Argentina’s semifinal victory over England. The Argentine Football Association is being investigated over the display of a political banner related to the Falkland Islands by members of the team on the field after the match. FIFA regulations generally prohibit political messages or demonstrations during official competitions, making the incident a significant part of the disciplinary review. The governing body is also looking into several other alleged violations involving Argentina throughout the tournament. These include discriminatory chants by supporters inside stadiums, delays to kick-off times, failures to comply with security protocols, and multiple incidents in which spectators allegedly threw objects onto the field during matches. FIFA’s disciplinary process will assess whether these incidents breached the organization’s disciplinary code and competition regulations. The governing body has informed all individuals and organizations involved that they will be given an opportunity to submit their responses and present their respective positions before any sanctions are imposed. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee will review all available evidence, including official match reports, video footage, witness statements, and the submissions provided by the parties involved. Once the review process is complete, the committee will announce its decision in accordance with FIFA’s disciplinary procedures. At this stage, no final ruling or punishment has been issued. Any potential sanctions against the players, coaching staff, or the Argentine Football Association will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation and the committee’s final verdict. The disciplinary proceedings highlight FIFA’s continued efforts to enforce its competition rules and ensure that players, officials, teams, and supporters adhere to the standards of conduct expected during the world’s biggest football tournament.
