Percy Bysshe Shelley’s “Mont Blanc”

In Romantic-era poetry, Percy Bysshe Shelley’s “Mont Blanc: Lines Written in the Vale of Chamouni” (1816) stands as the ultimate meditation on the romantic sublime. He wrote it during the second generation of English Romanticism alongside Lord Byron and John Keat.  Shelley used the terrifying scale of the Alpine peak to launch questions about perception, human consciousness and the unseen forces governing the cosmos.

While early Romantics like William Wordsworth often found moral harmony and divine comfort in nature, Shelley’s philosophical temperament brought a different energy. For Shelley, nature was not a benevolent mother figure, but an indifferent, boundless, and overwhelming energy. Shelley engages directly with the concept of the Sublime. The sublime is an aesthetic experience where vastness or power induces a feeling of terrifying awe. It makes the human observer feel physically insignificant while mentally elevated. Rather than finding traditional religious comfort in the mountain’s height, Shelley explores his philosophical atheism. He views Mont Blanc as a symbol of Necessity or an impersonal power that governs existence.

Throughout the five-part poem, Shelley constructs a series of striking visual and philosophical wonders. Shelley opens the poem by comparing human thought to a river flowing through a ravine. The “everlasting universe of things” rolls through human perception. Human consciousness is both passive (receiving impressions from the grand landscape) and active (shaping those impressions into meaning).

The everlasting universe of things

Flows through the mind, and rolls its rapid waves…

Looking up at Mont Blanc, Shelley does not describe a peaceful picture-postcard landscape. Rather, he depicts a wild, chaotic realm of ice, rock, and storm. He envisions the mountain as a primordial arena where “the old Earthquake-daemon taught her young / Ruin”. The glaciers are slow-moving “frozen floods” that flatten forests and rocks with silent force. Shelley reflects on what lessons this silent mountain holds for humanity. The mountain possesses a mysterious tongue that teaches a lesson.

To Shelley, Mont Blanc speaks an unspoken truth that can repeal large codes of fraud and woe (i.e., tyrannical dogmas, religious orthodoxies, and political oppression). Nature’s unyielding reality strips away human pretense. The poem reaches its dramatic climax by returning to the relationship between the peak and human thought. Shelley notes that the mountain remains still, snowy, and serene high above human affairs.

He closes with a famous philosophical question:

And what were thou, and earth, and stars, and sea,

If to the human mind’s imaginings

Silence and solitude were vacancy?

The mountain’s grandeur is real, but its meaning exists because the human imagination is there to perceive it. Without the human mind to process wonder, the immense universe would merely be an empty void.

AI could replace millions of jobs, warns “Godfather of AI”

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is often said to have the potential to eliminate a large number of jobs. According to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, AI could affect almost every profession and may lead to shorter working hours. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates believes that, gradually, humans may become unnecessary for many tasks. Elon Musk has predicted that within the next two decades, most people may no longer need to go to work. Computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton is widely known as the “Godfather of AI.” He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2024 for his work on artificial intelligence. Geoffrey Hinton who is associated with the University of Toronto in Canada has warned about the potential negative impact of AI on employment. Speaking at Georgetown University, he said he believes AI could lead to widespread unemployment with millions of people potentially losing their jobs. He explained that companies are investing heavily in AI infrastructure including data centers and chips to improve automation. According to Hinton, companies will seek returns on these investments by selling AI systems capable of performing tasks currently carried out by human workers at a lower cost. He said that the desire for greater profits could ultimately lead AI tools to replace human employees. However, Hinton acknowledged that AI technology would also create new employment opportunities. Nevertheless, he believes the number of new jobs may not be sufficient to replace all the jobs that could be lost. He also admitted that it is extremely difficult to predict the long-term effects of AI technology. Hinton has previously issued warnings about the risks associated with AI. At one point, he estimated that there was a 10% to 20% chance that AI could eventually contribute to the destruction of humanity. He stressed that it is important to discuss the potential dangers of AI. Hinton acknowledged that the uncertainty surrounding AI can be troubling because no one knows exactly what the future holds. He said that if someone asks what AI technology will look like in the next 10 years, no one can accurately predict it. Earlier, in an August 2025 podcast appearance, Hinton said that AI is learning things in ways that humans do not fully understand and that there may be no reliable way to simply switch it off. Hinton’s research helped lay the foundations of machine learning, the technology that enables computers to replicate aspects of human intelligence. However, in recent years, he has been campaigning for AI to be developed and used safely. In 2023, Hinton left his position at Google saying that bad actors could potentially use the technology to harm other people. In a recent interview, when asked about the pace of AI development, he said that most experts in the field currently believe that eventually possibly within the next 20 years, humans could develop AI systems that are more intelligent than humans. He described this as a frightening prospect, comparing current AI technology to a three-year-old child, while noting that children grow up very quickly. According to Hinton, the impact of AI on the world could be similar to that of the Industrial Revolution. He explained that the Industrial Revolution effectively halted the need for humans to develop greater physical strength because people began relying on increasingly powerful machines. He believes humanity is now doing something similar with human intelligence potentially creating technology that could surpass human intellectual capabilities. When asked what life might look like 10 or 20 years from now, Hinton said that it would largely depend on how political systems respond to and manage the technology. In his view, AI could have remarkable benefits in the medical field and could improve the efficiency of almost every industry. However, he stressed that society needs to be much more cautious about the rapid development of AI technology.

What happens to your body if you drink soft drinks…

Soft drinks have become a regular part of modern lifestyles, with many people enjoying them during meals, celebrations, and social gatherings. While these sugary beverages are refreshing and widely available, health experts warn that drinking them every day can have serious consequences for overall well-being. Regular consumption of soft drinks has been linked to several health problems, making it important to understand the risks and choose healthier alternatives whenever possible. One of the biggest concerns is the high sugar content found in most carbonated beverages. A single can of soft drink often contains a significant amount of added sugar and calories, which can contribute to weight gain over time. Consuming excess sugar regularly increases the risk of obesity, a condition that is closely associated with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Soft drinks may also contribute to dehydration. Although they are liquids, many contain caffeine, which can have a mild diuretic effect in some individuals. Combined with high sugar levels, these beverages may not hydrate the body as effectively as water. As a result, people who rely heavily on soft drinks instead of water may experience headaches, fatigue, constipation, and reduced energy levels. Another area of concern is digestive health. Nutrition experts suggest that excessive intake of sugary and artificially sweetened drinks may affect the balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut. A disrupted gut microbiome can lead to digestive discomfort, increased appetite, changes in metabolism, and difficulty maintaining a healthy weight. Dental health is also at risk. The acids used in carbonated drinks can gradually wear away tooth enamel, making teeth more vulnerable to decay. At the same time, the high sugar content feeds harmful bacteria in the mouth, increasing the likelihood of cavities and gum problems. Drinking these beverages frequently throughout the day can significantly raise the risk of long-term dental damage. Research has also explored possible links between frequent consumption of sugary beverages and chronic illnesses. Studies suggest that high intake of sugar-sweetened drinks is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Some research has examined potential connections with certain types of cancer, but scientists continue to investigate these relationships, and more evidence is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn. Health professionals recommend limiting soft drink consumption and choosing healthier options such as water, fresh fruit-infused water, milk, buttermilk, or unsweetened natural juices. Making small dietary changes today can reduce long-term health risks and support a healthier lifestyle for years to come.

  • Hidden signs of liver disease

Liver specialists in the United Arab Emirates are warning that liver disease can develop silently for many years.  Many people do not know they have a liver problem until the damage becomes severe. Doctors explain that the liver does not have pain sensing nerves so it usually does not hurt even when it is damaged.  It is also a very strong organ that can keep working normally even after 70% to 80% of it has been affected. Because of this fatty liver disease and other liver conditions may progress quietly for 10 to 30 years without clear symptoms. If they are not found early they can lead to liver scarring (cirrhosis) liver failure and in some cases the need for a liver transplant. Fatty liver cases are increasing Experts estimate that around 30% to 40% of adults in the UAE have fatty liver disease.  The condition is now called Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) because it is mainly linked to problems with the body’s metabolism. Without treatment MASLD can progress to liver inflammation scarring cirrhosis and even complete liver failure. Young adults are also at risk Doctors say liver disease is no longer a problem only for older adults. Rising rates of obesity type 2 diabetes excess weight and metabolic syndrome are increasing the number of cases among younger people as well. As obesity and diabetes continue to rise experts expect more people to develop serious liver disease in the future.   Why Symptoms Often go unnoticed The liver stays “silent” for two main reasons. First it does not have pain nerves. Second the healthy part of the liver continues to do its job even when a large portion is damaged. Early symptoms if they appear are often mild. These may include ongoing tiredness low energy weakness or slight discomfort in the upper abdomen.  Many people ignore these signs. Who is most at risk? People with type 2 diabetes obesity high cholesterol metabolic syndrome heavy alcohol use or a lack of physical activity have a higher risk of developing fatty liver disease. Research suggests that about 60% of people with type 2 diabetes also have fatty liver disease. However experts stress that even people with a healthy weight can develop the condition especially if they have a family history of liver disease an unhealthy diet or low levels of exercise. Gym goers should be careful too Doctors say they are seeing more people with fatty liver who do not drink alcohol are not overweight and consider themselves healthy. Experts warn that  eating too much sugar taking low quality supplements especially muscle building products getting too little sleep dealing with long-term stress, and sitting for many hours can all harm the liver. Unnecessary medicines and unregulated herbal supplements may also put extra pressure on the liver. Warning Signs that need medical attention Although liver disease may not cause symptoms at first you should see a doctor if you experience •Constant tiredness or weakness •Unexplained weight loss •Loss of appetite •Pain or swelling in the abdomen •Ongoing nausea •Seek urgent medical care if you notice. •Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice) •Dark colored urine •Very pale stools •Swelling in the legs or abdomen •Easy bruising •Confusion or changes in mental alertness •Vomiting blood or blood in the stool Early detection can make a difference Experts say many liver diseases can be slowed down if they are diagnosed early.  In some cases part of the damage can even improve with proper treatment and healthy lifestyle changes. Losing excess weight controlling blood sugar and cholesterol eating a balanced diet exercising regularly and staying active are all important for keeping the liver healthy. Get regular liver checkups Doctors recommend that people at higher risk have liver function tests blood sugar and cholesterol checks and a liver ultrasound or FibroScan at least once a year. A FibroScan is a quick painless test that can detect fat buildup and scarring in the liver within minutes. Experts say the liver often gives no warning signs making regular screening one of the best ways to protect your liver health.

  • Use rosemary in moderation

Rosemary is a popular herb used to add a fresh and pleasant aroma to food. But it is more than just a kitchen ingredient.  This evergreen herb comes from the Mediterranean region and belongs to the mint family.  It is commonly used as dried leaves or in powdered form. Rosemary contains nutrients such as iron calcium and vitamin B6. It has also been used for centuries because of its possible health benefits. Modern research has explored how its natural compounds may affect the body. Rich in Antioxidants Rosemary contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that may help protect the body from harmful free radicals.  These compounds may also support the immune system and healthy blood circulation. May support digestion rosemary has traditionally been used to help with digestive problems such as indigestion. In Europe it has been used for this purpose for many years and Germany’s Commission E has recognized its traditional use for digestive discomfort. May help focus and mood The smell of rosemary may also have an effect on mental performance. Research published in Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology found that rosemary aroma was linked with better attention mental performance speed accuracy and mood. Possible brain benefits Rosemary contains a natural compound called carnosic acid.  Scientists are studying this compound because it may help protect brain cells from damage caused by free radicals. This is one reason rosemary is being researched for its possible role in brain and nerve health. What about Cancer? Some laboratory studies have explored rosemary extracts and their possible anti tumor effects.  One study found that a rosemary extract slowed the growth of human leukemia cells in laboratory conditions. Other research has also looked at its anti inflammatory and anti-tumor properties. However these findings do not mean that rosemary can treat or cure cancer. More research is needed to understand its effects in humans. Use it in moderation Rosemary is generally safe when used in normal amounts as a food ingredient.  However taking very large amounts may cause harmful effects including vomiting and other serious problems. For this reason rosemary is best used in moderate amounts. If you plan to take rosemary as a supplement or use it for a specific health purpose it is better to speak with a healthcare professional first.

  • The jaded gender talks

By Saman Aftab We are so habitual of listening to the gender inequality, women empowerment, and ever growing population talks that now these topics have become an essential subject for the matter of discussing societal issues. But what we people have lacked to unravel is the very essence of these debates. Why gender inequality exists? Why we are still lagging behind in terms of employing more women? Why we are unable to control the growing rate of population in our country? Before addressing the ‘absolutely unavoidable’ questions, let me take the readers down an irksome memory lane of my life. Last year when our maid broke the news of her pregnancy to us, our most obvious question was why now? Considering her age which was 42 years that time and her financial grim along with unsupportive role of her husband in bearing the burden of their five children, this question clicked in every mind. And her answer though not surprising was quite gloomy for the existence of every female in this world; “baji, larka chahye humen” (we need a boy). She had four daughters and a deaf son. Her statement broke my heart because it questioned the capabilities of her daughters who were all physically and mentally sound. This memory was not worth forgetting because as a female it made me feel inferior. But this Babygirl vs Babyboy thing is not new, in fact it is one of the most deeply rooted concerns of our society. The normalcy of demanding the birth of a boy from a married woman is consolidating with the passage of time. The worst part of this matter – it’s getting acceptance. Ironically, majority of mothers in law showcase such demands to the newly married couple, as if it is in their hands to ‘design’ the genetic make-up of their offspring. The heart wrenching memory got afresh, when Tabassum shared her so called good news with us. Tabassum, 35 years old woman who works as a maid in three houses, a mother of four girls is expecting again for the sake of receiving a son this time. Her good news reminded me of her last fourth delivery when she gave birth to a girl in government hospital and she was made to give her daughter to a rich family on the persuasion of her drug addict husband. Whether they got money in return was dubious but chances of such happening were bright. I really hope and pray that this time she gets a son, otherwise the couple will continue to bring unwanted girls in this world and ruin their lives. For all the existing daughters of this couple are living a dark and disowned life. This brutal reality of life is not constrained to lower class people and it has crossed the demarcation of social groupings based on all classes, religions and races. Let us take an example of my sister’s friend, who is married to a well-established businessman and living in a posh locality. The poor lady who has a rich family, is a mother of two cute little girls. Although the little girls born to riches are living a good life, their mother is undergoing severe mental anxiety and pressure for not having a son. And of course, she for the sake of getting rid of such pressure is planning to have another baby neglecting her present deteriorating health condition. Unfortunately, the instances are innumerable and the rate of their occurrences is increasing day by day. Why boy child is mostly preferred over girl child? The answer lies in the heart of several burdens tied with bringing up a girl till her marriage. Among so many liabilities, the extra protection needed by the girls in our society and the curse of dowry have aggravated the scenario to such an extent that today girls are seen as “misfortune”. Of course exceptions are always there. Let us shift the focus from this melancholy to addressing those “absolutely unavoidable” questions raised earlier. 1: Gender inequality; Homo sapiens (humans) are generally categorized into three groups namely man, woman and transgender. Men are always ranked superior for enormous reasons but if we see things more pragmatically, it becomes evident that parents are left with sons in their old age while their daughters somehow abandon them and serve in laws for the rest of their lives. Call it our family system, it is the way it is. Then how can girls be loved or demanded? For voicing rights for equality, women should also bear the responsibilities equally. If a woman is capable of doing an employment being educated or skilled, she must pursue it for sake of giving all the best of resources to her parents that are expected of a son. The root cause of inequality among genders is the leverage given to men of being more useful and thus more needed. As long as the share of women in the society is constrained only to domestic chores and family caretaking, this inequality will never fade away. More women should be encouraged to become financially sufficient and independent. But how? This leads to our second question. 2: Women empowerment; there should be more campaigning with regards to educating girls and investing in their skill building. More powerful the educational background of a woman is, more will be the chances of her getting a good job for the sake of financial security. Thus, the number of women working for the betterment of society and raising capital will rise exponentially. And finally once these two milestones are achieved, the third ordeal of our country will evade automatically. 3: Overpopulation: as discussed in the start, demand and desire for the birth of a son has contributed a lot more towards overpopulation. Men are expected to take care of their parents but the same goes for women also. And in this age of compatibility, women should come forward and play a vital part in developing this society. Instead of placing all the
