DR Congo releases 15 prisoners to M23 rebel group

Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have released 15 prisoners and handed them over to the AFC/M23 rebel movement.

The International Committee of the Red Cross facilitated the transfer, marking the first known exchange under last year’s peace agreement signed in Qatar.

The detainees departed from the government-held city of Beni in a convoy and travelled through Uganda before being delivered to rebels in Rutshuru territory.

All 15 individuals explicitly agreed to the transfer after months of bilateral negotiations regarding the finalised list of detainees.

The diplomatic step aims to bring relief to separated families while addressing ongoing conflict in eastern Congo.

    QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) provincial chief Senator Maulana Abdul Wasey have reaffirmed their commitment to restoring lasting peace in the province, stressing the importance of unity and collective action to tackle security challenges. During a meeting in Quetta, the two leaders reviewed the overall law and order situation and discussed measures to strengthen peace and stability across Balochistan. Chief Minister Bugti described the establishment of durable peace as the provincial government’s top priority, saying cooperation among political, religious and social leaders was essential to achieving this goal. He emphasised that national unity was crucial in confronting terrorism and anti-state elements, adding that the government was fully committed to protecting the lives and property of citizens while promoting development, prosperity and the rule of law throughout the province. Senator Abdul Wasey highlighted the need for consultation, political consensus and national cohesion, saying Balochistan’s challenges could only be overcome through joint efforts involving all stakeholders. In a separate engagement, Chief Minister Bugti visited the residence of martyred District and Sessions Judge Abdul Hakeem Kakar to offer his condolences to the bereaved family and paid tribute to the judge’s services and sacrifice.

    Diesel price rises as government increases petroleum levy

    ISLAMABAD: The federal government has increased the price of high-speed diesel after raising the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) on the fuel by Rs1 per litre, adding further pressure on consumers and transport-related costs. Following the latest adjustment, the price of high-speed diesel has gone up by 54 paisas per litre, reaching Rs382.89 per litre. The increase comes despite a decline in the ex-refinery price of diesel, with the higher petroleum levy pushing up the final price paid by consumers. The government has raised the diesel levy by Rs1 per litre as part of the latest petroleum price adjustment. The PDL on high-speed diesel now stands at Rs76.28 per litre. The latest increase follows another adjustment made on August 12, when the government raised the petroleum levy on diesel by Rs2 per litre. The successive increases have resulted in a significant rise in the levy component of the retail price. Petrol price reduced In contrast to diesel, the government has reduced the price of petrol by 94 paisas per litre. The price of petrol has now been fixed at Rs324.98 per litre. The Petroleum Development Levy on petrol, however, has remained unchanged at Rs80 per litre. The differing price movements for petrol and diesel are largely linked to changes in their respective pricing components. While the ex-refinery price of diesel declined, the increase in the government levy more than offset the reduction, resulting in a higher retail price. The latest adjustment is expected to have an impact on transportation and logistics costs because diesel is widely used by commercial vehicles, buses, trucks, agricultural machinery and other heavy transport. Higher diesel prices can also influence the cost of goods and services by increasing transportation expenses across supply chains. Meanwhile, the reduction in petrol prices provides limited relief to motorists using petrol-powered vehicles. The government periodically reviews petroleum prices based on international oil prices, exchange-rate movements, taxation and other components of the domestic pricing mechanism. The latest changes reflect the impact of adjustments in the petroleum levy and ex-refinery prices on consumers.

That round pulled in heavyweight backers, including Bezos Expeditions, AMD Ventures, Nvidia, and Meta. CuspAI was founded in 2024 with a much narrower focus. Originally, the company built AI tools to identify and test materials for water purification and carbon capture projects. Since then, its mission has grown considerably. By expanding into AI infrastructure and chip materials, the startup now positions itself as a possible fix during a period of serious supply chain strain. One of CuspAI’s key advantages lies in finding substitutes. The company’s AI can search for alternative materials that mimic the properties of scarce elements like tantalum, gallium, and iridium. These elements are becoming harder to source as demand climbs, particularly with the explosion of AI infrastructure worldwide. The International Energy Agency has already flagged concerns that data centre demand for gallium could outpace supply within the next few years. Adding to the pressure, rising geopolitical tension between the US and China over rare earth minerals continues to complicate global supply chains. Analysts have pointed to this rift as a growing risk factor for tech manufacturers everywhere. Beyond securing fresh funding, CuspAI has also launched something bigger: the AI Materials Foundry. This initiative brings together more than 45 major industry players under one coalition, including tech giants like Nvidia, Samsung, Meta, and Hyundai Motor Group. The goal is to pool resources and expertise as the industry races to solve its materials bottleneck. With Bezos now backing the effort directly, CuspAI’s profile in the AI and semiconductor space is only expected to grow. As chip shortages continue to challenge manufacturers worldwide, the company’s approach of using AI to hunt for alternative materials could prove critical in keeping production on track.

    China donates $2m health supplies to Pakistan

    ISLAMABAD: China, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has provided Pakistan with reproductive health and family planning supplies and medical equipment valued at $2 million to improve maternal and newborn healthcare services across the country. The assistance was formally handed over to the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination during a ceremony held at the Rural Health Centre (RHC) Tarlai in Islamabad. The donation is aimed at expanding access to essential reproductive health services and family planning facilities in 10 underserved districts, where healthcare resources remain limited. The initiative is expected to enhance the availability of critical medical supplies, improve maternal and infant health outcomes, and strengthen Pakistan’s healthcare system by supporting vulnerable communities. Officials described the collaboration between China and UNFPA as an important step towards improving reproductive healthcare and ensuring greater access to quality medical services for women and families in underserved regions.
