Dubai launches tourist discount drive for residents

Dubai has introduced a new initiative offering special discounts and benefits to residents who invite friends and family members to visit the emirate. The move aims to support the tourism sector, which has faced challenges due to regional tensions and declining visitor activity.

Under the programme, residents can invite their relatives and friends to Dubai and receive benefits worth more than AED 3,000, including hotel stays, dining offers, entertainment experiences and attraction tickets.

The initiative, called “A Dubai Invite,” encourages residents to become ambassadors for the city by promoting Dubai as a travel destination among their personal networks. The programme will continue until the end of October.

Residents can register and nominate guests through an official platform, allowing invited visitors to access the available offers and experiences during their stay.

The campaign comes during the summer season, which is traditionally a slower period for tourism in the United Arab Emirates due to extremely high temperatures that can reach around 50 degrees Celsius.

Dubai remains one of the world’s leading tourism destinations, attracting millions of visitors every year with its luxury hotels, shopping centres, entertainment venues and iconic landmarks.

However, the emirate’s tourism industry has faced pressure following regional security concerns. Earlier tensions in the Middle East affected travel patterns, with some tourists cancelling trips and hotels experiencing lower occupancy levels.

The tourism sector has gradually shown signs of recovery after a ceasefire reduced tensions in the region. Industry officials said many hotels have increasingly relied on domestic visitors and local tourism activity during the recovery period.

The Dubai government has also introduced financial support measures to help businesses affected by regional disruptions. Previous relief packages included fee reductions, exemptions for certain sectors and support measures for hospitality and aviation-related businesses.

Daniel Siad, modelling scout with ties to Epstein,…

Daniel Siad, a modelling scout whose name appeared nearly 2,000 times in the Epstein files released by the US Department of Justice, was found dead at his home outside Paris on Wednesday, prosecutors said. His body was reportedly discovered in the kitchen by a woman staying with him, and a neighbor reportedly attempted CPR without success. Siad’s death comes amid a wide-ranging probe into human trafficking and tax fraud opened in February following the release of the Epstein files. Since the investigation began, 24 women have come forward as victims or witnesses of alleged acts committed by Siad or others, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said in a statement. As part of the probe, Siad had been subjected to special scrutiny, though he had repeatedly proclaimed his innocence. Siad’s lawyer, Arab-Tigrine, told Reuters that Siad had asked on several occasions to be heard by French judicial authorities, but that no action was taken. She confirmed that Siad had died of a heart attack. Siad is the second man publicly linked to Epstein who has died in France. In 2020, French authorities arrested modelling agent Jean-Luc Brunel after allegations he procured women for Epstein. Brunel was found hanged in his prison cell in 2022, having spent 14 months in custody awaiting trial on charges of rape of minors and sexual harassment. He denied the charges, along with any participation in Epstein’s sex trafficking. The Epstein files, released by the US Department of Justice, have revealed extensive connections between the late financier and individuals in the modelling and entertainment industries. Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, had a long history of exploiting young women and maintaining a network of powerful associates. The release of these documents has reignited debates about accountability and the extent of Epstein’s influence. Siad’s death raises questions about the circumstances surrounding his passing and the ongoing investigation into his activities. His lawyer’s statement that he had sought to be heard by authorities suggests a desire to clear his name, but his sudden death has left many unanswered questions. The French authorities have not yet released further details about the investigation into Siad’s activities, but the probe continues as more victims and witnesses come forward. The deaths of Brunel and Siad have drawn attention to the high-profile individuals connected to Epstein who have died under unusual circumstances. While both men denied the allegations against them, their deaths have fueled speculation about the extent of Epstein’s network and the pressure faced by those connected to him. As the investigation continues, the public will be watching closely for any further developments in the case. Siad’s death marks another chapter in the ongoing saga of the Epstein scandal, which has exposed the dark underbelly of the modelling and entertainment industries and raised questions about the accountability of those who enabled Epstein’s crimes. The investigation into Siad’s activities and the broader network of individuals connected to Epstein is likely to continue, with the hope of bringing justice to the victims and shedding further light on the extent of Epstein’s influence.

New KIA Sportage develops repeated fault within 90…

Islamabad: A consumer court in Islamabad admitted a complaint against KIA Lucky Motors Corporation and related parties after a customer claimed that his brand new KIA Sportage developed a serious technical fault within days of purchase, rendering it unusable despite repeated inspections and repairs. The complaint has been filed under the Islamabad Consumer Protection Act, 1995, and the court has started regular hearing of the matter after reviewing the initial arguments. According to the complaint, the vehicle developed a “Shifter System Malfunctioning: Service Immediately” warning after covering only around 900 kilometres, causing the vehicle to stop working properly and requiring assistance. The complainant claimed that the same problem appeared again shortly after the first repair, raising concerns about the reliability and safety of a newly purchased vehicle. The case was filed against KIA Lucky Motors Corporation, its officials, the Islamabad dealership and KIA Corporation South Korea. The court issued notices to the concerned respondents for appearance and response. The complaint states that the customer purchased the KIA Sportage for personal and official use with the expectation that a new vehicle would be safe, reliable and free from defects. According to the documents, the vehicle was purchased on 13 February 2026 for Rs11.299 million. The customer alleged that while travelling for an official assignment, the vehicle suddenly displayed the shifter system warning and the gear system stopped functioning properly. He claimed that after reaching his destination, the same issue happened again, forcing him to seek help from the company. According to the complaint, the dealership initially informed the customer that the problem was caused by loose internal wiring. The vehicle was inspected and the customer was assured that the issue had been resolved and the vehicle was safe to drive. However, the customer claimed that the same warning appeared again on 30 May 2026 while he was travelling with his family, leaving the vehicle unusable and forcing him to arrange alternative transport. The complaint further states that the vehicle had to be taken away through a recovery service after attempts to fix the problem failed. The customer has alleged that different explanations were provided regarding the cause of the fault, including wiring issues, moisture concerns and failure of the Shifter Control Module, a key part of the vehicle’s transmission system. The complaint argues that these different explanations created further doubts about the actual cause of the problem and the effectiveness of the repairs carried out by the company. The customer has requested the court to order replacement of the vehicle or refund of the purchase price along with compensation for financial losses, inconvenience and distress. The complaint also mentions that the customer contacted the company through official channels and sent a legal notice, but claimed that the issue was not resolved. The company’s response, according to the complaint documents, acknowledged that a shifter malfunction was reported and that the Shifter Control Module was replaced under warranty after diagnosis. The legal case has brought attention to consumer rights in Pakistan, especially regarding the responsibilities of automobile companies when a newly purchased vehicle develops serious problems. The complainant’s lawyer Munir Ahmad Advocate High Court said the purpose of the case is to seek a fair solution for the customer and ensure consumers receive proper protection when purchasing expensive products. The court will continue hearing the matter after receiving responses from the concerned parties.

Air India pilot undergoes confirmatory drug test after turbulence incident injures 17

India’s aviation authorities have launched an investigation after an Air India flight experienced severe turbulence that injured 17 passengers and crew members, with the pilot now undergoing additional testing following an initial screening result. The incident occurred on August 4 when an Air India Airbus A320 was travelling from Phuket, Thailand, to New Delhi. The aircraft was carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members when it suddenly lost approximately 300 feet, or 91 metres, in altitude before recovering and continuing its journey safely. After the aircraft landed in the Indian capital, eight passengers and four cabin crew members were taken to hospitals for medical treatment. Authorities said their conditions were stable. Following the incident, both pilots underwent routine screening for psychoactive substances, as required under aviation safety procedures. According to India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation, the initial screening involving the pilot-in-command produced a result that required further examination. The ministry said the pilot’s sample has been sent to an authorised laboratory for confirmatory analysis. Officials are now waiting for the final laboratory report before deciding whether any further action is necessary. The aviation ministry has classified the incident as a “Serious Incident”, prompting India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) to begin a formal investigation into what happened aboard the aircraft. Both pilots have also been temporarily removed from flight duties while the investigation and confirmatory testing are underway. Authorities said any additional measures will depend on the findings of the investigation and the results of the laboratory analysis. Footage shared after the incident showed signs of the turbulence inside the aircraft, including cabin baggage scattered along the aisle. Some injured passengers were reportedly carried from the aircraft on stretchers after landing. Air India separately confirmed that its pilots had undergone post-flight screening following the incident. However, the airline said the results of those tests had not been provided to the company. The incident represents another challenge for Air India as the carrier continues a major transformation under the ownership of India’s Tata Group. Since acquiring control of the airline in 2022, Tata has undertaken an extensive modernisation programme, including placing large aircraft orders and working to upgrade Air India’s ageing fleet and operations. The airline has made progress in integrating its aviation businesses and improving its services, but it continues to face several difficulties. These include delays in aircraft deliveries and disruptions caused by airspace closures linked to the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict. Air India has also been attempting to rebuild public confidence following a far more devastating accident in June 2025. Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner travelling to London, crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad. The accident killed all but one of the 242 people aboard the aircraft, while 19 people on the ground also lost their lives. As the airline works to recover from recent setbacks, it has appointed aviation industry veteran Tewolde Gebremariam, the former chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines, as its new CEO. He is expected to play a key role in the company’s efforts to strengthen operations, restore confidence and lead its broader turnaround strategy. The latest turbulence incident will now be closely examined by Indian aviation authorities as they determine its cause and assess whether any further safety measures are required.

Suspected food poisoning claims three young lives

In a deeply distressing incident that has sent shockwaves through the small community of Khanpur, located within the Shikarpur district, at least ten individuals have fallen severely ill after reportedly consuming contaminated or unwholesome food. The situation, which unfolded rapidly over the past 24 hours, has tragically resulted in the deaths of three young children, while seven other victims, including women and other minors, remain under intensive medical care. According to official statements released by local police authorities, the harrowing sequence of events began when a group of families, gathered for what is believed to be a communal meal or a private social event, started exhibiting acute symptoms of foodborne illness. The symptoms, described by medical staff as severe and aggressive, included persistent vomiting, acute diarrhea, high-grade fevers, and in some cases, neurological distress such as disorientation and muscle weakness. The rapid onset of these symptoms alarmed family members, who immediately rushed the afflicted individuals to the nearest government-run healthcare facility and private clinics in the vicinity. Police officials, who have been deployed to the scene to maintain order and initiate a formal investigation, confirmed the grim casualty count. In a somber press briefing, a senior police officer stated that three children, all under the age of ten, succumbed to the poisoning shortly after their arrival at the hospital. Despite the frantic efforts of the attending physicians, who administered emergency first aid, intravenous fluids, and antitoxins, the children could not be revived. The deaths have plunged the already impoverished area into a state of profound grief and anger, with residents demanding immediate answers and accountability. The seven surviving victims are currently undergoing treatment in the hospital’s emergency and isolation wards. Among them are several women and more young children, indicating that the affected group was largely composed of families. Medical professionals have described the condition of at least two of the survivors as “critical but stable,” as they continue to battle severe dehydration and toxic shock. The hospital administration has mobilized additional staff and resources to manage the sudden influx of patients, while also sending samples of the victims’ stomach contents and blood to a forensic laboratory in the provincial capital for toxicological analysis. Preliminary medical reports suggest that the contamination could be due to the presence of highly toxic pesticides or spoiled meat, though this has yet to be scientifically verified. In response to the escalating crisis, the district administration has convened an emergency meeting to coordinate relief and investigative efforts. The police have cordoned off the location where the meal was prepared and served, seizing leftover food samples, cooking utensils, and water sources for thorough forensic examination. “We are treating this case with the utmost seriousness,” a police spokesperson emphasized. “We are recording the statements of the survivors, the family members, and the food handlers involved. Our primary objective is to determine whether this was a case of gross criminal negligence by a food supplier, accidental cross-contamination, or, in a more sinister scenario, deliberate sabotage.” The local community, already grappling with poverty and limited access to clean drinking water and quality healthcare, is now reeling from the tragedy. Small gatherings of grieving relatives and concerned neighbors have formed outside the hospital, many expressing outrage over the recurring incidents of food adulteration and poor hygiene standards in the region. Activists have called for a stringent crackdown on unlicensed food vendors and caterers, who often operate without basic health safety certifications. They argue that such tragedies are preventable if local authorities enforce existing food safety laws and conduct routine inspections of commercial kitchens and street food stalls. As the investigation continues, the police have assured the public that they will leave no stone unturned. They have promised to bring those responsible to justice, whether they are individual cooks, wholesale suppliers, or negligent shopkeepers. Meanwhile, the district health officer has issued a public advisory warning residents to be extremely cautious about the source and freshness of their food, particularly during the hot and humid season when perishable items spoil rapidly. This heartbreaking incident in Khanpur serves as a grim reminder of the dire consequences of food insecurity and the critical need for robust public health infrastructure. As the families of the deceased prepare for burial according to Islamic rites, the entire region mourns a loss that could have been avoided. The coming days will be crucial as forensic results are expected to shed light on the exact nature of the poison, potentially paving the way for legal action and, hopefully, preventing future calamities. The police have confirmed that a detailed case report will be filed, and all findings will be shared with the public in the interest of transparency and justice.

North Korea warns US nuclear strategy could trigger arms race

PYONGYANG: North Korea has warned that a new nuclear strategy being considered by the United States could trigger a fresh global arms race and increase the risk of nuclear conflict. A spokesperson for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry criticised the proposed US nuclear policy and accused Washington of using nuclear weapons for strategic dominance and political and military objectives. The spokesperson described the reported US strategy as a serious and dangerous development. North Korea said the policy could undermine the existing nuclear balance and accelerate the development and deployment of nuclear weapons around the world. According to the North Korean statement, continued expansion of nuclear capabilities could push the international security environment closer to the threshold of nuclear war. However, US Deputy Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby said on Thursday that he did not expect any major or fundamental changes in the nuclear strategy currently under consideration. North Korea also criticised planned joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea. It warned that it would exercise what it described as its right to self-defence in response to what it considers hostile military activities. A statement carried by North Korean state media said Pyongyang would not tolerate what it described as an increasingly confrontational situation created by hostile states. The United States and South Korea are scheduled to begin their joint military exercises on August 17. The drills are expected to continue until August 27. The exercises are also expected to take into account possible lessons from North Korea’s involvement in Russia’s war in Ukraine, particularly its military experience and battlefield capabilities. The latest warnings came after North Korea conducted its second missile test in less than a week. On Wednesday, Pyongyang launched a ballistic missile from its eastern coast towards the sea. Six days earlier, it had conducted another test involving a short-range missile. North Korea’s latest military activity comes amid continued tensions with Washington and Seoul. Diplomatic efforts to restart talks have so far failed to produce a breakthrough. According to reports, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has largely rejected recent calls for renewed diplomatic engagement with the United States and South Korea. Since the collapse of diplomatic efforts involving former US President Donald Trump in 2019, Kim has instead focused on strengthening North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities. Analysts believe Pyongyang could eventually use its expanding nuclear capabilities as leverage to seek concessions from Washington. These could include relief from international sanctions and other measures imposed on North Korea over its nuclear and missile programmes.
