Karachi: Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah has clarified that the province’s six-day school week policy will apply only to government schools, while private educational institutions will remain free to determine their own weekly schedules.

The clarification came after a notification issued by the Sindh School Education Department stated that both public and private schools would resume classes from August 1 under a six-day teaching schedule, leading to confusion among parents and school administrations.

Addressing the issue through a statement on social media, Sardar Ali Shah explained that all government schools across Sindh will conduct academic activities six days a week starting August 1, 2026, in line with the department’s decision.

He further emphasized that the revised working schedule is not mandatory for private schools. Instead, private educational institutions will continue to set their operating days and working hours according to their own policies.

The minister’s clarification has resolved uncertainty surrounding the implementation of the new academic schedule, confirming that only government-run schools are required to follow the six-day teaching week.

    Consumers continue to bear a substantial burden of taxes, levies and distribution margins on petroleum products, with a significant portion of the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) going towards government charges and other components rather than the basic fuel cost. According to official documents, petrol is currently priced at Rs327.62 per litre, while the basic cost of the product stands at Rs197.69 per litre. This means consumers are paying around Rs130 per litre in the form of petroleum levy, taxes, freight-related charges and margins. The documents indicate that the government has imposed a petroleum levy of Rs80 per litre on petrol, making it one of the largest components of the additional charges paid by consumers. In addition to the petroleum levy, petrol carries a climate support levy of Rs5 per litre and customs duty of Rs21.24 per litre. The price also includes an inland freight equalisation margin of Rs7.48 per litre. Meanwhile, oil marketing companies (OMCs) receive a margin of Rs7.87 per litre, while petroleum dealers are entitled to a margin of Rs8.64 per litre. Taken together, these taxes, levies, freight charges and commercial margins add a sizeable amount to the underlying cost of petrol, resulting in a significant difference between the basic product cost and the final price paid at filling stations. Diesel also carries substantial charges A similar situation is visible in the pricing structure of high-speed diesel. According to the documents, the basic cost of HSD has been calculated at Rs264.76 per litre, whereas its notified consumer price stands at Rs380.86 per litre. The difference of approximately Rs116 per litre represents taxes, levies and various margins included in the final price of diesel. The petroleum levy on HSD stands at Rs74.28 per litre, while a climate support levy of Rs5 per litre is also included in the price structure. Consumers are additionally paying Rs15.68 per litre in customs duty on HSD. The inland freight equalisation margin accounts for another Rs4.63 per litre. The pricing structure also provides Rs7.87 per litre as the margin for oil marketing companies and Rs8.64 per litre as the dealers’ margin. The figures highlight the significant role played by government levies and other charges in determining retail petroleum prices. While the basic cost reflects the underlying price of the petroleum product, the final amount paid by consumers also incorporates a range of taxes, levies, freight costs and margins. The petroleum levy remains one of the most prominent components of the pricing structure for both petrol and diesel. The government uses petroleum-related levies as an important source of revenue, while other components are intended to cover costs associated with transportation, marketing and retail distribution. The high level of charges has a direct impact on consumers and businesses, particularly because petrol and diesel are widely used for transportation and commercial activities. Changes in fuel prices can also influence the cost of transporting goods and passengers and may eventually affect prices across different sectors of the economy.

    Pakistan’s National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has registered a case against Nooreen Niazi, the sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan under various sections of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) and the Pakistan Penal Code. The FIR alleges that Nooreen Niazi made “false and baseless accusations” against the state of Pakistan and its institutions including the armed forces, during a podcast interview and attempted to undermine public trust in state institutions. A few days earlier, a clip from Nooreen Niazi’s interview went viral on social media in which she allegedly discussed the Pakistani military, “Battle of Haq,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Donald Trump and the Abraham Accords. After the clip went viral, the NCCIA issued a notice summoning Nooreen Niazi. According to the FIR, the controversial interview was shared from various accounts on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and later went viral. The case alleges that Nooreen Niazi attempted to deny the achievements of the Pakistan Army during the Pakistan-India conflict in May 2025 while also allegedly spreading a false narrative to create hatred, fear and distrust against state institutions among the public. The FIR further states that her statements were allegedly aimed at deliberately damaging the reputation of state and defence institutions. According to the NCCIA, Nooreen Niazi was issued multiple notices directing her to record her statement and join the investigation. However, a case was registered against her based on initial evidence. The agency said that the involvement of other possible individuals would be determined during the investigation. The case against Nooreen Niazi has been registered under Sections 20 and 26A of PECA 2016 along with Sections 505 and 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code. PTI and Nooreen Niazi’s response Neither Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf nor Nooreen Niazi has issued an official response regarding the case so far. However, in a video shared by PTI’s official X account, Nooreen Niazi can be heard saying in response to a journalist’s question that she was unaware of the matter. She further said: “I have never done anything in my life that would result in an FIR being registered against me.” Earlier, on Saturday (18 July), the NCCIA had issued a notice to Nooreen Niazi over allegations of spreading “false, defamatory and provocative content” on social media and allegedly damaging state institutions. The Cyber Crime Reporting Centre of the NCCIA had directed Nooreen Niazi to appear on 20 July at 12 noon and provide an explanation regarding the controversial statement. Federal Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry condemned Nooreen Niazi’s statements, accused PTI leadership of promoting an anti-state narrative and said that legal action had been initiated. What was mentioned in NCCIA notice? The Cyber Crime Reporting Centre of the NCCIA, Islamabad issued a summons notice to Nooreen Niazi on 18 July 2026. According to the notice, she was called to appear at the NCCIA office in Islamabad on 20 July 2026 at 12 noon. The notice stated that an inquiry was being conducted into allegations of spreading “false, provocative and defamatory content” on social media and promoting a negative narrative against state institutions. The agency instructed Nooreen Khan Niazi to appear on the given date so that her statement could be recorded. It also warned that legal action could be taken under relevant sections of the Pakistan Penal Code if she failed to appear. Government’s position State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry condemned Nooreen Niazi’s remarks and alleged that Imran Khan’s sister had repeated statements similar to those previously made by members of his family. He claimed that their politics and actions give the impression that their aim is to harm Pakistan. He further said that after the recent interview, “there is no room left to deny that the PTI founder is a proxy of foreign powers.” He repeated allegations regarding foreign funding, Imran Khan’s personal life, the upbringing of his children and claims related to his former wife’s family, alleging that he had received support, funding and lobbying from foreign circles. Talal Chaudhry said: “This is no longer a hidden matter. Their target is not only the army or Pakistan’s institutions; their target is Pakistan itself.” He added that legal proceedings against Nooreen Niazi had been started and that she was issued a notice to present her viewpoint. Journalist’s explanation: “The editorial team decided not to upload interview” Journalist Ehtishamullah Behlam who conducted the interview told BBC Urdu that the interview was recorded on 15 May, when one year had passed since the May 2025 Pakistan-India clashes. He said that Nooreen Khan was asked questions in this context and gave her response. According to Ehtishamullah, the interview was recorded for a YouTube channel. He explained that after listening to Nooreen Khan’s remarks, he and the channel owner decided not to upload the interview. He said that only two short portions of the interview were separated and sent to the editorial team not for publishing but for consultation. According to him, one of those clips was the same one that later went viral. However, he did not explain how the video was uploaded on social media.

A research team led by American endocrinologist Dr. Elif Oral examined patients with the condition and found that affected fat cells develop significant structural and functional abnormalities. These changes can disrupt the body’s metabolism and contribute to a range of health complications. To better understand the disease, scientists created a mouse model in which the Lamin A/C gene was switched off only in fat cells. This is the same gene known to be affected in individuals with FPLD2. The model allowed researchers to closely examine how defects in fat tissue influence the body’s metabolic processes. Researchers believe the findings could improve understanding of rare fat disorders while also opening new avenues for the development of treatments for diabetes and other metabolic diseases.     Indian playback singer AR Ameen, son of celebrated composer AR Rahman, was injured in a car accident in Chennai early Monday, according to Indian media reports. Ameen was travelling with a friend when their vehicle was involved in a collision with a taxi near Olympia Tech Park in the Guindy area. The accident reportedly occurred at around 3:30am as Ameen and his friend were travelling towards Guindy. A taxi approaching from a side road collided with their car, resulting in injuries to those involved. Ameen and his friend sustained minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. They were later discharged and returned home. The passenger travelling in the taxi also suffered minor injuries and received medical attention before being discharged. Authorities have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. The Adyar Traffic Investigation Wing has registered a case as part of the inquiry. Police have also taken both vehicles involved in the accident into custody for examination. Further details about the cause of the crash are expected as the investigation progresses.
