Flash flood warning issued for New York, New Jersey

Authorities have issued a flash flood warning for New York City, parts of New Jersey and western Long Island as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds swept across the region, raising the threat of widespread flooding and travel disruptions.

Weather officials warned that intense downpours could quickly overwhelm drainage systems, flood roads and affect low-lying areas. The flash flood warning remained in effect through Monday morning, while a broader flood watch was issued for New York City and northern and central New Jersey until the evening.

Forecasters also declared a First Alert Weather Day, citing an elevated risk of flash flooding and severe thunderstorms. Moist and humid air moving into the region is expected to produce rainfall rates of one to three inches per hour, with total rainfall forecast between one and three inches. Some isolated locations could receive even higher amounts, significantly increasing the risk of flooding.

In response to the severe weather threat, New York City Emergency Management activated its Flash Flood Emergency Plan. City crews were deployed to clear storm drains and catch basins in flood-prone neighbourhoods, while emergency teams were placed on standby to respond to flooded streets, fallen trees and stranded motorists.

Officials warned that severe thunderstorms could also generate damaging wind gusts, increasing the possibility of power outages and hazardous driving conditions throughout the day.

Meanwhile, a High Surf Advisory was issued for beaches south of New York City and across Long Island, where waves were expected to reach between six and ten feet. Authorities also warned of a high risk of dangerous rip currents and urged residents and visitors to stay out of the water until conditions improve.

Temperatures were expected to remain in the low 80s under mostly cloudy skies. Weather experts forecast that storm activity would gradually weaken by Monday night, bringing an improvement in conditions.

Historic post-Brexit deal eliminates Gibraltar-Spain border fence

In a landmark shift ending decades of physical and bureaucratic division, Spain and Gibraltar have celebrated the dismantling of the land border fence following a treaty signed in Brussels. The post-Brexit agreement, taking effect at midnight, brings an end to land frontier controls and establishes Gibraltar as a de facto participant in the EU’s Schengen free-movement area. The treaty resolves over four years of complex negotiations between the United Kingdom, Spain, Gibraltar, and the European Union. Beyond removing land border gates that have stood since 1908, the accord places responsibility for Schengen passport checks at Gibraltar’s port and airport with Spanish officials, ensuring fluid transit for tourists and the roughly 15,000 Spanish cross-border workers who sustain the territory’s economy. Visiting the frontier municipality of La Línea de la Concepción to watch the physical removal of the barrier, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the deal marks an end to “the last wall in continental Europe”, laying the groundwork for shared regional prosperity. Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, emphasised that the historic arrangement delivers economic certainty and seamless movement while preserving the territory’s constitutional protections and British sovereignty intact.

Hayden Panettiere’s Nashville costar feels shatt…

Hayden Panettiere’s sudden death at just 36 has left her former Nashville castmates and fans struggling to process the heartbreaking loss. Among those mourning is Sylvia Jefferies, who played Panettiere’s on-screen mother, Jolene Barnes, on the popular country music drama. Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina. Her representative confirmed the actress’s death, while authorities said she was found in cardiac arrest. An investigation into the exact cause of death remains ongoing.  For Jefferies, the loss has been particularly painful because her connection with Panettiere extended beyond their scenes together. The actress recently shared an emotional tribute, remembering her former co-star as someone she cared deeply about. Jefferies described Panettiere’s passing as devastating and reflected on the struggles the actress had faced throughout her life. She also remembered the special bond they developed while working together on Nashville, where their characters shared a complicated mother-and-daughter relationship. The tribute came as the Nashville family gathered online and in public statements to remember Panettiere. Her former co-stars have described her as talented, energetic, kind and unforgettable. Connie Britton, who played Rayna Jaymes, also expressed her heartbreak following the news, while other cast members shared their own memories of the actress.  Panettiere became a major part of Nashville through her role as Juliette Barnes, a gifted country singer whose personal struggles often mirrored some of the challenges Panettiere experienced away from the screen. Her performance earned her two Golden Globe nominations and made her one of the show’s most recognizable stars.  Beyond Nashville, Panettiere was widely known for playing Claire Bennet on Heroes and Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise. She began acting as a child and built a career that included television, film and music. Her final years were marked by difficult personal struggles, which she discussed openly in her memoir. Those who knew her have emphasized that her difficulties were only one part of her story and that she was also a loving, talented and determined person. Jefferies’ emotional tribute is a reminder of the impact Panettiere had on people around her. While audiences will remember Juliette Barnes, Claire Bennet and the many other characters she brought to life, her former colleagues remember the woman behind those roles. At only 36, Panettiere’s death has brought renewed attention to a career that began in childhood and ended far too soon. Her Nashville family is now left with memories of the actress who brought passion, vulnerability and unforgettable energy to the series.

Cameroonian President Paul Biya reshuffles military leadership amidst prolonged absence in Switzerland

Cameroon’s 93-year-old President, Paul Biya, the world’s oldest sitting head of state, has enacted a strategic reshuffle of the country’s military leadership from abroad, issuing decrees to promote senior officers and appoint new commanders while remaining in Geneva, Switzerland. Among the key appointments, Biya promoted five colonels to the rank of brigadier general. Notably, Brigadier General Raymond Jean Charles Beko’o Abondo was reappointed to lead the elite Presidential Guard, an essential security unit responsible for the president’s personal protection that he has commanded since 2013. The administrative shifts coincide with growing domestic anxiety regarding Biya’s absence from Cameroon, which has extended to nearly two months following his departure on 7 June for what officials termed a “brief private stay”. Opponents and civil society groups have voiced concern over an institutional vacuum, noting that a newly created vice-presidential seat remains vacant and a promised cabinet overhaul has yet to materialise. Government representatives, including Communication Minister René Emmanuel Sadi, dismissed claims of administrative paralysis or health crises, maintaining that the president remains fully operational and continues to sign official decrees and financial agreements from abroad.
