Football legend Kazuyoshi Miura scores first competitive goal in four years
Japanese football icon Kazuyoshi Miura, widely known around the world as “King Kazu,” has achieved another remarkable milestone in his historic career by scoring his first competitive goal in four years. At the age of 59, Miura continues to prove that age is not a barrier when passion, dedication, and determination remain strong.
The veteran striker found the net while representing third-tier J3 League club Fukushima United, helping his team secure an impressive 7-0 victory over Iwaki Furukawa in the Emperor’s Cup. Miura scored in the 52nd minute of the match, creating a memorable moment for both his teammates and supporters.
The goal sparked celebrations from players on the field as well as those on the substitutes’ bench. Shortly after scoring, the experienced forward was replaced in the 55th minute, allowing him to leave the pitch after making a significant contribution to his team’s dominant performance.
This was Miura’s first competitive goal since November 2022, when he scored for Suzuka Point Getters, a club now known as Atletico Suzuka, in the Japan Football League. The achievement further added to the legacy of a player whose professional career has lasted for more than four decades.
Miura began his professional football journey in 1986 with Brazilian club Santos, becoming one of the few players in history to maintain a professional career across multiple generations. Over the years, he has played in different leagues and represented Japan internationally, earning respect for his commitment, professionalism, and love for the sport.
The former Japan national team player is now preparing for what could become his 42nd season as a professional footballer. After extending his loan agreement with Fukushima United, Miura is expected to remain with the J3 League club until June 2027.
Miura joined Fukushima United from Yokohama FC in December and continued his career with the club after making six appearances during a shortened 2026 campaign. Despite being nearly six decades old, he remains determined to compete professionally and contribute to his team whenever he gets the opportunity.
Japanese football is also entering a new era, as the country’s professional leagues are preparing to move from a spring-to-autumn schedule to an autumn-to-spring calendar. Throughout his career, Miura has repeatedly stated that he has no immediate plans to retire. He has previously expressed his desire to continue playing until he reaches the age of 60, and his latest performances suggest that he remains motivated to achieve even more milestones.
