Former Cambridge professor Jason Arday found dead following plagiarism controversy

Jason Arday, a former University of Cambridge professor who recently resigned following a high-profile plagiarism row, has died aged 41. Emergency services discovered him unresponsive at an address in Battersea, south London, on Friday afternoon, with the Metropolitan Police treating the death as unexpected but non-suspicious.

Arday resigned from his post as professor of sociology of education last week amidst allegations of plagiarism first raised by academic Nathan Cofnas. Whilst Arday denied plagiarism, he acknowledged errors in early work, explaining that his autism led him to rely on mimicry to process information, and noted that the intense public scrutiny had taken an unsustainable personal toll. His family expressed shock at his death, stating that a campaign of misinformation proved too much for him.

In 2023, Arday made history as Cambridge’s youngest Black professor at age 37. Following his resignation, Cambridge initiated an independent review into his appointment, while former employers including the University of Glasgow launched investigations into his co-authored research. Public figures, politicians, and academic colleagues have paid tribute to Arday, whilst raising broader concerns regarding the media pressure and duty of care owed to prominent scholars.

Monica Barbaro reveals ultimate dating red flag

Actor Monica Barbaro has opened up about what she believes is the biggest warning sign in modern dating while continuing to attract attention for her relationship with actor Andrew Garfield. The 36-year-old actor shared her views during the red carpet premiere of her upcoming film One Night Only, where she was asked about relationship habits that immediately raise concerns. Barbaro said one of the clearest red flags is when a person shows no curiosity about their date and spends the entire conversation talking only about themselves. She explained that several of her friends have experienced similar situations, describing it as a common complaint in today’s dating culture. According to Barbaro, meaningful conversations require mutual interest. She said it is a warning sign when someone fails to ask even a single question about the other person, as it reflects a lack of genuine interest in getting to know them. The actor added that healthy relationships are built on communication, attentiveness and equal participation in conversations. In her view, a one-sided discussion can reveal important aspects of a person’s personality early in the relationship. Barbaro’s comments come as public interest in her romance with Andrew Garfield continues to grow. The pair first sparked dating speculation after they were seen together around the 2025 Academy Awards, with fans closely following their appearances over the past year. Most recently, Garfield attended the premiere of One Night Only to support Barbaro, further fuelling interest in their relationship. Pakistan petroleum sales jump 23% in July as lower fuel prices boost demand

Pakistan’s petroleum product sales recorded a significant increase in July 2026, reflecting stronger economic activity, improved agricultural demand, and the impact of lower fuel prices. Industry data released on Monday showed that total petroleum sales reached 1.51 million tons, marking a 23% year-on-year (YoY) increase and the strongest July performance in several years. According to a report by brokerage firm Arif Habib Limited (AHL), the growth was fueled by declining domestic fuel prices, improving conditions in the agriculture sector, and a gradual rebound in economic and automobile-related activity. The report noted that farmers’ purchasing power improved due to better agricultural economics, while lower fuel costs encouraged higher consumption across the country. Excluding furnace oil (FO), sales by oil marketing companies (OMCs) increased 18.5% YoY, making July 2026 the strongest July for petroleum demand since July 2021. Petrol and Diesel Consumption Climbs Demand for motor spirit (MS), commonly known as petrol, remained robust during the month. Petrol sales rose 23% YoY to 0.73 million tons, reflecting increased transportation activity and higher vehicle usage. Meanwhile, high-speed diesel (HSD) sales climbed 19% YoY to 0.62 million tons. Diesel consumption was supported by greater agricultural operations, commercial transportation, and industrial activity as the economy continued its gradual recovery. Furnace Oil Registers Massive Growth Furnace oil sales posted the strongest percentage increase among all petroleum products, surging 406% year-on-year to 0.08 million tons. AHL attributed this sharp rise primarily to increased furnace oil consumption by the power sector, where seasonal electricity demand during the summer months led to greater fuel usage for power generation. Strong Month-on-Month Growth On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, overall petroleum sales also recorded impressive gains, rising 20% compared to June 2026. Analysts said the monthly increase was largely driven by lower domestic petroleum prices, which followed a decline in international crude oil prices as geopolitical tensions eased in global markets. During the month: Petrol (MS) sales increased 12% over June. High-speed diesel (HSD) sales rose 25%. Furnace oil demand jumped 89%, supported by higher electricity generation requirements during peak summer temperatures. PSO Strengthens Market Position Among Pakistan’s oil marketing companies, Pakistan State Oil (PSO) emerged as the strongest performer in July. The company’s total petroleum sales climbed 38% year-on-year to 702,000 tons. Petrol sales increased by 44.1%, while diesel sales rose 40.3%, enabling PSO to expand its presence in the domestic fuel market. According to the report, PSO gained market share at the expense of Gas & Oil Pakistan (GO). GO’s market share in petrol declined to 5%, its lowest level since June 2024, while its diesel market share fell to 7%, the weakest since May 2024. Government Levy Collections Remain on Track The report also estimated that the federal government collected approximately Rs134 billion through the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) during July. Based on current trends, AHL believes the government remains on course to meet its FY2026-27 PDL collection target of Rs1.68 trillion, representing an increase of nearly 12% compared with the revised target for the previous fiscal year.

Brooke Nader and Taron Egerton call it quits after…

Model Brooke Nader and actor Taron Egerton have reportedly ended their relationship after dating for around four months. The pair, who first sparked romance rumors in March, have decided to go their separate ways, with sources saying the split was amicable and without any major drama. According to Us Weekly, an insider confirmed on Monday that it was Nader who chose to end the relationship. “Their relationship was casual, but Brooke ended things with him,” the source told the publication. The insider added that there are no hard feelings between the two, suggesting the romance simply ran its course. Nader, 29, and Egerton, 36, were first linked earlier this year after they were spotted spending time together in public. Their romance quickly attracted attention from fans, as both stars had recently entered new chapters in their personal lives. Although they never publicly discussed their relationship in detail, they were seen together on several occasions, fueling speculation that their connection was becoming more serious. Despite the growing interest, the couple largely kept their romance away from the spotlight. Unlike many celebrity pairs who frequently share their relationships on social media, Nader and Egerton preferred to maintain a low profile. Their decision to keep things private made the reported breakup all the more surprising for fans who had been following their relationship. Sources close to the former couple say their romance was always relaxed rather than deeply committed. While they enjoyed spending time together, they were reportedly focused on their individual careers and busy schedules. Those close to them insist the breakup was not caused by a major disagreement or betrayal but was simply the result of realizing they were better off moving in different directions. Nader has continued to make headlines with her successful modeling career, fashion appearances and growing influence in the entertainment industry. Egerton, meanwhile, remains busy with several acting projects following acclaimed performances in films such as Rocketman, Tetris and the Netflix thriller Carry-On. Both stars have demanding professional commitments that often require extensive travel and long filming schedules. Neither Nader nor Egerton has publicly commented on the reported split. As is often the case with celebrity relationships, both appear to be focusing on their careers rather than discussing their personal lives. Although their romance lasted only a few months, fans appreciated seeing the pair together and wished them well. For now, the two are said to have parted on good terms, bringing a quiet end to what insiders describe as a casual but enjoyable relationship. With both stars continuing to thrive professionally, attention is now turning to their upcoming projects and what lies ahead in their personal lives.

Forensic report reveals new findings in Mir Raza c…

KARACHI: The forensic examination of a shirt belonging to Karachi youth Mir Raza has been completed. The report has been received by the police and is now being examined as part of the investigation. According to investigative sources, traces of hydrochloric acid were reportedly detected on the shirt during the chemical analysis. The sources also said that substances associated with a sedative were found in a blood sample taken from Mir Raza. The chemical examination was conducted to determine whether the shirt contained any material that could help investigators understand the circumstances surrounding the incident. The findings are expected to be considered along with other forensic evidence collected during the investigation. Investigators also reported the presence of gunshot residue (GSR) on the waist area of Mir Raza’s shirt. Sources said the concentration of GSR was higher around the waist section. They said this finding could provide investigators with important information about the direction and circumstances of the shooting. However, the forensic findings are expected to be assessed alongside other evidence before investigators reach any final conclusion. Police are also examining other aspects of the case to establish what happened. Meanwhile, further shortcomings in the investigation have reportedly emerged. Investigative officials said several important steps had not been completed despite days having passed since the incident. According to officials, geofencing of the crime scene has not yet been carried out. Geofencing could help investigators identify mobile devices that were present in or around the area at the relevant time. Officials also said that Mir Raza’s mobile phone data had not been obtained. The phone record could potentially help investigators establish his movements and identify contacts or activities around the time of the incident. Another issue raised by investigators concerns Mir Raza’s smartwatch. Officials said its forensic examination had also not been conducted. Such devices can sometimes contain information about movement, activity and other data that may assist an investigation. The latest findings have added new elements to the case. Investigators are now expected to examine the forensic report along with other available evidence. The police are also facing questions over why some investigative procedures were not carried out earlier. The family has previously called for a thorough investigation and answers about what happened to Mir Raza.

Search operation resumes for seven missing Broad Peak climbers

GILGIT: Search and rescue teams resumed their operation on Saturday morning to locate seven climbers who remain missing after a deadly avalanche struck Broad Peak earlier this week. The mission restarted after weather conditions improved, allowing rescuers to return to one of the world’s most challenging mountain environments. The rescue operation had been suspended late Friday because of heavy snowfall, poor visibility and the continuing risk of avalanches. Officials said improving weather conditions enabled both ground and air teams to resume the search. The avalanche occurred on Thursday while a 10-member international expedition was climbing Broad Peak, an 8,047-metre mountain in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. According to regional authorities, the climbers were ascending at an altitude of around 6,600 metres when they were caught in the massive avalanche. Three climbers were confirmed dead after their bodies were recovered on Friday. The deceased were identified as Omani climber Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy, Nepali mountaineer Pur Bahadur Gurung and American climber Mallory Geis. Their bodies were later airlifted to Skardu. Seven climbers are still missing. They include internationally renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, fellow Nepali climbers Kili Pemba Sherpa, Nima Sherpa, Nawang Thindu Sherpa and Gyalu Sherpa, Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi and Chinese climber Wang Zhong. According to the local administration, a three-member civilian rescue team led by renowned Pakistani mountaineer Sarbaz Khan resumed the ground search on Saturday morning. Experienced Nepali climbers already stationed at the Broad Peak base camp also joined the rescue effort to assist in locating the missing mountaineers. Pakistan Army helicopters have also been deployed to support the operation. Rescue officials said helicopters are assisting with aerial surveillance, transporting rescue personnel and assessing areas that remain inaccessible by foot. Officials from the Alpine Club of Pakistan said the search operation remains extremely difficult because of steep mountain slopes, unstable snow, harsh weather and the constant threat of further avalanches. These conditions continue to slow rescue efforts and increase risks for search teams. Rescuers have also been using drone technology to scan the mountain. During the operation, drone footage reportedly identified signs of additional climbers at an altitude of around 6,000 metres. Ground teams are attempting to reach the location despite dangerous terrain and difficult weather conditions. The international rescue effort has also received support from renowned Nepali climber Mingma David Sherpa, who travelled to Pakistan to assist in the search for Nirmal Purja and the other missing climbers. Authorities said the expedition team was last in contact on Thursday morning before communication was lost. Data from the climbers’ tracking devices later suggested that several members of the team had been swept hundreds of metres down the mountainside by the avalanche.
