Gabby Lopez: Man on a mission

Who would have thought he’d be back in the game — and in the limelight — again?

Two months after the House of Representatives during the Duterte administration rejected the franchise renewal of ABS-CBN on July 10, 2020, Eugenio “Gabby”Lopez III left his post as chairman emeritus and director of the Philippines’ biggest media network at the time.

Not only that. He also resigned as director of other Lopez firms: ABS-CBN Holdings Corp., Sky Vision Corp., Sky Cable Corp., First Philippine Holdings Corp., First Gen Corp., and Rockwell Land Corp.

His resignation was accepted.

Perhaps for some who were still working for ABS-CBN at the time (including this writer who served as editor-in-chief of ABS-CBN’s news platform), there was only one way to look at it: Gabby had taken responsibility for what had happened. Recall that around 5,000 people lost their jobs after the franchise was rejected. One could compare Gabby’s move to the Japanese behavior for taking responsibility, a sort of hara-kiri by a CEO.

Many ABS-CBN employees had been frustrated (to say the least) over the company’s stance vis-a-vis Rodrigo Duterte and his administration: often silent, submissive, and accepting of whatever and whenever Duterte attacked the company, even if the then-president was wrong or inaccurate. (READ: TIMELINE: Duterte against ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal)

Looking back, it was a stark contrast to the combative position taken by Rappler during the Duterte years when at least 12 cases were filed against the company and its chief Maria Ressa. Rappler and Ressa have since won all but one of those cases. (READ: SolGen asks SC to acquit Maria Ressa, Reynaldo Santos Jr. in cyber libel case)

But perhaps, given the reality that by law, broadcast franchises in the Philippines are only granted by the House of Representatives, that was the only position a publicly listed company could take.

Or so Gabby thought.

Gabby then hibernated for over five years in the US — until he quietly returned late last year as ABS-CBN’s financial crisis persisted following the loss of its lucrative franchise.

The Lopez cousins’ feud erupted in March, and it was, at the root, all about ABS-CBN and how to save it.

Part 2: The Lopezes, presidents, and the cost of dissent
Part 3: Lopez vs Lopez: The secrecy fight behind the Razon power deals

Gabby wanted more money to save the company; cousin Federico “Piki” Lopez thought otherwise.

As the dispute worsened, ABS-CBN issued a statement on April 15 on the “PR attacks” that 68 individuals had allegedly “received preferential treatment” in the “payout of their retirement benefits.” In a swipe at Piki Lopez’s argument that more money shouldn’t be poured into ABS-CBN, the statement cited a quote from ABS-CBN founder Eugenio “Kapitan Geny” Lopez: “Profit alone is not enough reason to go into business. But if we serve our people, then I think that our growth and success will follow. If we take care of our people, they will take care of us. That’s the kind of culture a company should have.”

Fast forward to this week, the next chapter in the ABS-CBN saga is being written.

After selling his family branch’s stake in the ultimate Lopez parent firm Lopez Inc. to San Miguel Corp. chairman Ramon Ang, Gabby has taken another step in his journey to make things right.

In a statement on Tuesday, August 12, ABS-CBN said that that three branches of the Lopez family – Crème Investment Corporation (Crème), Mantes Corporation, and Presta Holdings Company Inc. – would raise P6 billion in new equity for the troubled media and entertainment firm.

An investment holding company, I&C Holdings Corp., will subscribe to P3.5 billion worth of ABS-CBN shares, while Lopez Inc. will subscribe to an aditional P300 million.

“ABS-CBN has built valuable brands, intellectual property, content and deep relationships with Filipino audiences in the Philippines and overseas. As the media industry continues to evolve, we believe these assets provide a strong foundation for the company to adapt, build a sustainable content-led business, and create long-term value,” I&C Holdings Corp. said.

“This substantial investment is a vote of confidence in ABS-CBN,” said Mark Lopez, chairman of ABS-CBN Corporation. “It tells us there are people who continue to believe in the company and in our mission of being In the Service of the Filipino.”

The P6 billion will be used to “strengthen ABS-CBN’s balance sheet while giving the company additional resources to execute its transformation into a more sustainable, content-led media and entertainment business.”

Two days earlier or on Monday, August 11, after Crème Investment Corp., representing 25.7% or around one-fourth of Lopez Inc. was sold to Ramon Ang, Gabby said he sold for two reasons:

“This dispute has not been good for any of us, or for the people who work in our companies. This allows us to take a step towards the restoration of family peace. The second is that it allows me to channel our family’s resources into businesses aligned with our personal mission. We will announce more on this in due time. Our families have known Ramon a long time. I am confident he will be a good partner to Lopez Inc.”

Gabby’s move to make things right for ABS-CBN is back on track. As he emailed to Rappler on Sunday, April 9, “tomorrow (Monday) begins the end of the Lopez saga.”

Years from now, when Gabby’s own biography is written, this chapter is going to stand out. – Rappler.com

PSX jumps 2,100 points on global optimism

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed a strong rally at the start of trading on Wednesday, with investors returning to the market after signs of easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East lifted global sentiment. The benchmark KSE-100 Index climbed by more than 2,100 points during the opening session, reflecting renewed optimism among market participants. By around 9:30am, the KSE-100 Index was trading at 179,216.20 points, registering a gain of 2,132.98 points, or 1.20 percent, compared with the previous close. Market analysts attributed the sharp recovery to encouraging remarks from officials in Qatar and the United States, which strengthened expectations that diplomatic efforts could help prevent further escalation of the Iran conflict. The improved global outlook encouraged investors to increase buying in key sectors of the local market. The rally was broad-based, with significant buying interest recorded in automobile assemblers, cement manufacturers, commercial banks, fertiliser companies, oil marketing firms, power generation companies and refineries. Among the major gainers were heavyweight stocks such as Attock Refinery Limited (ARL), Mari Energies (MARI), Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC), Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), Pakistan Oilfields Limited (POL), Pakistan State Oil (PSO), Habib Bank Limited (HBL), MCB Bank, Meezan Bank (MEBL) and United Bank Limited (UBL), all of which traded in positive territory during the early session. Investor confidence also received support from reports that Pakistan has approached China to refinance a $1.3 billion commercial loan. According to reports, the financing is expected to be finalised later this month after both sides complete negotiations on the terms and conditions. Market participants believe the move could help strengthen Pakistan’s external financing position and provide support to the country’s foreign exchange reserves. The strong opening followed a volatile trading session on Tuesday, when the stock market closed significantly lower after investors engaged in widespread profit-taking. Although the KSE-100 Index had reached an intraday high of 178,768.83 points, selling pressure emerged later in the session as traders locked in gains following Monday’s impressive rally. Global financial markets also contributed to the positive sentiment. Asian equities advanced sharply after strong corporate earnings in the United States and continued enthusiasm for technology stocks pushed Wall Street to fresh record highs. Investors were further encouraged by hopes that diplomatic efforts would help keep the Strait of Hormuz open, easing concerns over disruptions to global energy supplies and putting downward pressure on oil prices and bond yields. Japan’s Nikkei index surged around 3 percent, while South Korea’s benchmark gained more than 4 percent. The broader MSCI Asia-Pacific Index outside Japan also posted strong gains, with Chinese blue-chip shares moving higher as investors welcomed improving market sentiment across the region. In the United States, stock futures remained stable after the S&P 500 reached another record high. However, trading in some technology stocks remained mixed. Chipmaker AMD declined in after-hours trading despite reporting earnings that exceeded analysts’ estimates, as investors had anticipated even stronger results. Concerns also persisted over the heavy capital spending required to support artificial intelligence infrastructure, with rising borrowing costs continuing to weigh on parts of the technology sector.

PSX sheds 280 points amid cautious trading

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) remained under pressure during Tuesday’s trading session as investors adopted a cautious approach. The benchmark KSE-100 Index opened on a weak note and stayed in negative territory during the first half of the session. By 1pm, the index had dropped 279.65 points, or 0.16%, to 177,982.68 points. It had closed at 178,262.33 points in the previous session. The market witnessed further pressure shortly after opening. At around 9:39am, the KSE-100 fell to 177,914.38 points, losing 347.95 points, or 0.20%. The index later recovered some of its early losses but remained below the previous close. Trading remained volatile during the session. The index reached an intraday high of 179,123 points and a low of 177,903.87 points. Despite the decline in the benchmark index, market activity remained relatively strong. Around 339.48 million shares were traded during the session. The total value of shares traded stood at approximately Rs19.71 billion. Investor sentiment remained subdued as market participants appeared cautious about taking fresh positions. Profit-taking also contributed to the pressure on the benchmark index. The partial recovery from the morning low indicated some buying interest at lower levels. However, it was not enough to push the index back into positive territory by midday. Investors continued to monitor market developments and broader economic indicators for direction. The afternoon session was expected to determine whether the index could recover its losses or close the day in negative territory.

Pakistan exports rise 13.1% to $3.94 billion in Ju…

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s exports of goods and services rose by 13.1 percent year-on-year to $3.94 billion in July 2026, providing an encouraging start to the new fiscal year and signalling continued improvement in the country’s external sector. Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal shared the figures on Saturday while presenting the Monthly Development Update for August 2026. He said exports stood at $3.48 billion in July 2025, meaning the latest increase reflects stronger performance across several major export categories. According to the minister, merchandise exports increased by 9.4 percent to around $3 billion in July 2026 from $2.8 billion a year earlier. When services exports are included, the combined figure reached approximately $3.9 billion, compared with $3.5 billion in July last year. Key export sectors show growth Ahsan Iqbal said the improvement in exports was supported by higher shipments across several important sectors. Surgical goods recorded the strongest growth among the highlighted export groups, increasing by 16.3 percent. Food exports rose by 8 percent, while leather goods registered growth of 7.8 percent. Textile exports, one of Pakistan’s largest sources of foreign exchange, also increased by 3.9 percent during the month. The minister said the figures indicated that Pakistan’s external sector had started the new fiscal year on a positive trajectory, although maintaining this momentum would require continued reforms, improved competitiveness and greater diversification of export products and markets. Manufacturing sector stages strong recovery The positive external-sector performance coincided with a broad-based recovery in domestic industrial activity. According to Ahsan, Large-Scale Manufacturing (LSM) expanded by 5 percent during fiscal year 2025-26, reversing a 0.74 percent contraction recorded in the preceding fiscal year. He said the recovery was spread across the industrial sector, with 16 of the 22 LSM sectors registering positive growth. The automobile sector posted the highest increase at 57.8 percent, followed by transport equipment at 42.4 percent. Electrical equipment production grew by 14.3 percent, tobacco by 12.6 percent and food manufacturing by 7 percent. The figures, he said, reflected an improvement in industrial activity and could provide support to investment, employment and overall economic growth if the recovery remains sustained. FBR collection, remittances improve The government also reported improvement in tax revenues at the beginning of FY2026-27. Federal Board of Revenue tax collection increased by 8.4 percent to Rs820.9 billion in July 2026, according to the minister. He said stronger revenue mobilisation, together with fiscal discipline, was helping improve the country’s overall financial position. Workers’ remittances also remained a major source of support for Pakistan’s external account. Remittance inflows reached $3.63 billion in July 2026, up 13 percent from approximately $3.2 billion in the same month of 2025. Ahsan said the latest increase followed record remittances of $41.6 billion received during the previous fiscal year. He noted that remittances not only strengthened Pakistan’s foreign exchange position but also provided direct financial support to millions of households across the country. Current account deficit remains contained Despite continued pressure on the external account, the current account deficit remained relatively contained. The deficit stood at $328 million in July 2026, compared with $529 million during the same month of the previous year. The minister described the development as another indication of improved external-sector stability. He also highlighted the growing contribution of Pakistan’s technology sector. Information and Communication Technology exports reached $417 million in July 2026, underlining the increasing role of digital services in generating foreign exchange. The government has been seeking to expand technology exports as part of a broader strategy to diversify Pakistan’s sources of external earnings beyond traditional sectors such as textiles and agricultural products. Inflation moderates Ahsan Iqbal also pointed to a moderation in consumer price pressures at the start of the new fiscal year. Consumer Price Index inflation eased to 9.2 percent in July 2026, compared with 11.7 percent in May 2026. The minister said the decline suggested that inflationary pressures were beginning to moderate. He added that changes in the year-on-year inflation rate were also influenced by base effects as well as the impact of international food and energy prices. The government is aiming to maintain price stability while supporting economic activity and protecting the purchasing power of households. Fiscal position strengthens The planning minister said Pakistan’s fiscal position had also improved significantly during FY2025-26. The fiscal deficit narrowed to 2.6 percent of GDP from 5.4 percent in FY2024-25. According to Ahsan, this represented the lowest fiscal deficit recorded in two decades. He said stronger fiscal management would remain essential during FY2026-27 as the government seeks to maintain macroeconomic stability while creating room for development spending and economic expansion. Development spending and job creation Public investment is another major component of the government’s economic strategy. Projects approved during July 2026 are expected to create around 7,851 direct jobs and 14,053 indirect employment opportunities across different sectors. The minister said employment generation would remain an important objective of development planning, particularly as the country seeks to create greater opportunities for its young population. He said Pakistan had undergone a difficult period of economic adjustment and that the stability achieved in recent years had required significant effort. Under the government’s URAAN Pakistan initiative, the next phase would focus on converting macroeconomic stability into long-term economic transformation, with exports positioned as a key driver of growth. According to Ahsan, higher exports could help generate employment, increase household incomes, expand opportunities for young people and improve living standards. Rs211.3 billion authorised for development projects The Ministry of Planning authorised Rs211.327 billion, equivalent to 21.1 percent of the relevant allocation, during July 2026 to facilitate timely financing for priority development projects. The minister said the move was aimed at ensuring that strategically important schemes received funding without unnecessary delays. During July, the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) also reviewed a number of development proposals. It approved nine projects, three position papers and one concept clearance proposal, while nine projects were recommended for consideration by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC). Three projects were deferred, while
