Gianni Infantino defends World Cup 2026 amid criticism

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a strong defence of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, accusing critics of focusing on controversy while overlooking what he described as a tournament that united millions of people around the world. In an open letter published on Monday and shared on his personal social media accounts as well as FIFA’s official platforms, Infantino responded to criticism surrounding the tournament, which was jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico and won by Spain.
The FIFA chief argued that many detractors ignored the positive impact of the competition and instead concentrated on negative narratives. He praised the atmosphere created by fans and highlighted football’s ability to bring people together across generations.
Addressing critics directly, Infantino wrote, “To all of you who missed watching kids, babies, grandparents, and parents come together for the beautiful game, I say sorry that the matches are now over and sorry that you missed all that joy and togetherness.” He continued, “Sorry that you were so consumed by hate and criticism that you missed it all.”
The 56-year-old also appeared to criticise journalists and commentators, claiming that while FIFA had worked tirelessly to organise a successful tournament, others had focused on spreading misinformation. “To those behind their pens and papers, behind their screens spreading hate and false rumours, I want to say that while you are sitting behind, we at FIFA are on the front lines organising, working hard, and delivering the best show in the world,” he wrote.
Infantino pointed to what he described as the tournament’s outstanding security record. According to the FIFA president, nearly seven million spectators from more than 200 countries attended matches throughout the competition. “We experienced no violence, no incidents, 100% safety and security, only joy and happiness,” he said.
Despite the successful attendance figures, the tournament faced criticism over travel and visa restrictions affecting supporters and officials from several participating nations, including Iran, Haiti, Senegal and Ivory Coast. Somali referee Omar Artan was also reportedly denied entry to the United States after not receiving a visa. Responding to those concerns, Infantino said, “You mentioned the few people denied visas and overlooked the millions who were approved, from all parts of the world. Because football unites the world, and it was demonstrated impressively this summer.”
The FIFA president also addressed debates over refereeing decisions, player suspensions and disciplinary rulings during the tournament. He argued that controversial officiating is common across football and questioned why FIFA had received such intense scrutiny. “Potentially mistaken red or yellow cards or subsequent decisions not to ban players in certain situations are routine and widely accepted in some of the biggest leagues worldwide,” he said, adding, “It’s curious that the same countries employing these practices are the ones criticising.”
Concluding his message, Infantino urged critics to focus on football’s ability to unite people rather than dwell on controversy. “To those spending their time and energy hating us, please take a moment to reflect, meditate, pray, or watch a football match and truly observe the faces, the eyes, the emotions,” he wrote, ending with the message, “May football rise above all hate.”

Maulana Tariq Jamil remembers Junaid Jamshed’s path to faith

Maulana Tariq Jamil has opened up about the life-changing journey of late singer-turned-preacher Junaid Jamshed, recalling the heartfelt conversation that marked the beginning of his spiritual transformation. Speaking during a recent podcast, the renowned Islamic scholar shared personal memories of his early meetings with Junaid Jamshed and explained how the former pop icon struggled with inner emptiness despite enjoying extraordinary fame and success. According to Maulana Tariq Jamil, Junaid Jamshed was one of Pakistan’s biggest celebrities during the late 1990s. He described him as a talented, handsome and highly successful singer who had earned immense popularity across the country. Despite reaching the peak of his career, Maulana Tariq Jamil said Junaid was searching for something that fame and wealth could not provide. Recalling their first meeting, the scholar said the conversation lasted only a few minutes before Junaid interrupted him with a deeply personal confession. He said the singer admitted that although he possessed the glamour and recognition many people dreamed of, he still felt an overwhelming sense of emptiness inside. Maulana Tariq Jamil quoted Junaid as saying that his heart felt empty and that he saw himself as a boat drifting without a destination. The scholar noted that these words came from a man who had already achieved everything that many people spend their lives chasing, including fame, admiration and financial success. Reflecting on the moment, Maulana Tariq Jamil said he realized that Junaid was searching for peace in worldly achievements rather than in faith. He explained that he told the singer he was trying to heal the wrong wound by looking for satisfaction in glamour and celebrity status. The scholar said he advised Junaid that true peace could only be found through a stronger relationship with Allah. He encouraged him to focus on spiritual growth instead of relying on worldly success to bring lasting happiness. According to Maulana Tariq Jamil, that advice eventually became a turning point in Junaid Jamshed’s life. Over time, the former singer embraced a more religious lifestyle and dedicated himself to Islamic teachings. He gradually stepped away from the entertainment industry and became widely respected for his religious work, public speeches and efforts to inspire others. Maulana Tariq Jamil said that after adopting a religious path, Junaid often expressed how different his life had become. He reportedly told the scholar that the peace, satisfaction and blessings he experienced after strengthening his faith were unlike anything he had felt during his years as one of the country’s biggest music stars. The scholar further reflected on Junaid’s later years, saying he believed Allah blessed him with countless favors after his spiritual transformation. He also described Junaid’s death as martyrdom and said his journey serves as a reminder that lasting peace does not come from fame or material success but from faith, purpose and a sincere connection with Allah. Junaid Jamshed remains one of Pakistan’s most remembered public figures, with his transformation from celebrated musician to respected religious personality continuing to inspire many people years after his passing.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day overcomes leak fears as …

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has proven that even a major piracy leak cannot slow down one of Marvel’s biggest theatrical events in years. Just hours before the highly anticipated film officially premiered, a high-quality bootleg copy reportedly surfaced online and quickly spread across X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk. The leak sparked concerns that piracy could hurt the movie’s opening-day performance, with fans urged across social media to avoid spoilers and support the official theatrical release.  Despite those fears, the latest Spider-Man adventure bounced back in spectacular fashion. According to early box office figures, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned an astonishing $72 million in preview screenings, setting a new Marvel record. The figure surpassed the previous preview record of $60 million, which had been held by Avengers: Endgame since 2019. The milestone highlights the enormous excitement surrounding Tom Holland’s return as Peter Parker and demonstrates that audience demand remained strong despite the piracy concerns.  Industry analysts now expect the film to deliver one of the biggest opening weekends in box office history, with projections ranging between $260 million and $280 million worldwide. If those estimates hold, Brand New Day will cement itself as one of Marvel Studios’ most successful launches ever.  The overwhelming interest is hardly surprising. The film marks Holland’s first solo Spider-Man outing since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The story follows Peter Parker as he struggles with life after Doctor Strange’s memory spell erased his identity from the world. Living in isolation, Peter faces emotional challenges while confronting dangerous new enemies in a fresh chapter for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Marvel has also benefited from an extensive promotional campaign leading up to the release. Earlier this year, the movie’s trailer generated unprecedented online attention, becoming the biggest trailer launch in history with more than 719 million views in its first 24 hours. That record later placed it ahead of the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer, underlining just how much anticipation surrounded the Spider-Man sequel long before tickets went on sale.  The recent piracy incident nevertheless serves as another reminder of the growing challenge facing major Hollywood releases. High-profile films increasingly become targets for online leaks, forcing studios to step up security while encouraging audiences to experience blockbusters in theaters instead of through illegal copies.  For Marvel, however, the early results suggest the leak had little impact on audience enthusiasm. Instead of slowing momentum, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung past expectations, broken a long-standing Marvel preview record, and positioned itself as one of the defining box office successes of 2026.

Relations between the coalition partners have remained strained since the first phase of polling, with both parties accusing each other of electoral irregularities in several constituencies. Senior leaders from both sides held multiple meetings in recent days in an effort to resolve the dispute. However, the talks failed to produce an agreement before the second phase of voting. The PPP has demanded legal action and re-polling in selected constituencies, while the PML-N has rejected allegations of organized rigging and maintained that the election results reflect the will of the voters. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met PML-N President Nawaz Sharif to review the political situation and discuss developments related to the AJK elections. Senior party leaders also attended the meeting and discussed the coalition’s future strategy.

Akshay Kumar is stepping into unfamiliar territory with his upcoming thriller “Haiwaan” taking on a fully negative character for the first time. The role marks a clear departure from his usual on-screen image. The actor recently opened up about his first look and the nature of his character in the film. He made clear there is nothing sympathetic or conflicted about the role he is playing. Kumar explained that his character matches the film’s title exactly, with absolutely no shades of grey involved. He described the role as being completely and unapologetically evil from start to finish. He admitted that taking on such a character felt like an entirely new experience for him. Kumar said he had always wanted to play a psychopath on screen, something he had not attempted in his career so far. He also pointed out that his recent projects have spanned a wide range of genres. From comedy and horror to action and drama, Kumar said he has been consciously exploring different creative directions. Director Priyadarshan also spoke about how Kumar’s distinctive look for the film came together. The film also features Saif Ali Khan, Saiyami Kher and Shriya Pilgaonkar in key roles alongside Kumar. Together, the cast brings a mix of star power to what’s shaping up to be a darker, more intense project. “Haiwaan” is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on September 11. Vance pledges military, diplomatic pressure on Iran

The United States will use military, economic and diplomatic measures to bring the conflict with Iran to an end, Vice President JD Vance has said, stressing that Washington remains committed to preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. In a television interview, Vance said negotiations with Iran remain difficult due to internal divisions within the country’s leadership. He claimed that while some factions in Iran want to end the conflict through diplomacy, others continue to support confrontation, making negotiations more complicated. Despite the challenges, Vance expressed confidence that a settlement could eventually be reached, although he acknowledged the process would take time. He said the US hopes regional stability will improve and global oil prices will ease once tensions decline. The vice president reiterated that the United States would continue using every available tool, including military strength, economic sanctions and diplomatic engagement, to achieve what he described as a lasting resolution. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump said he still prefers diplomacy over military action. Speaking at a public event, Trump said he would rather reach an agreement with Iran than resort to war, but warned that military action remains an option if negotiations fail. Trump also dismissed reports suggesting the United States is facing shortages of key military ammunition. He insisted that the country has substantial stockpiles of weapons and said defence manufacturers are rapidly expanding production to meet future requirements. The president further warned that individuals responsible for leaking classified information about US military capabilities would face legal action, saying authorities were actively pursuing those involved. The developments come as tensions remain high around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes for oil exports. At the same time, eight leading international shipping organisations have urged the United Nations to oppose any proposal to impose mandatory transit fees on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. In a joint letter addressed to the UN and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the organisations warned that introducing tolls would undermine the internationally recognised principle of free navigation and could increase shipping costs, fuel prices and inflation worldwide. The maritime groups also cautioned that allowing such charges could create a dangerous precedent for other international waterways and disrupt global trade. The appeal follows recent discussions between Iran and Oman on future arrangements for the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials said the two countries have reached preliminary understandings on several issues related to maritime traffic, although they clarified that the agreement does not mean the waterway will be fully reopened under a new system. Separately, reports in US media claimed President Trump had questioned senior defence officials over alleged shortages of military munitions during a recent Cabinet meeting. According to the reports, concerns over weapon supplies had influenced military planning regarding Iran.
