Gold price in Pakistan rises by Rs1,700 per tola

Gold prices moved higher across Pakistan on Monday, tracking an upward trend in the international bullion market, according to the latest rates issued by the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA).

The price of 24-karat gold per tola increased by Rs1,700, taking the new rate to Rs428,436. The recovery comes after a sharp decline recorded in the previous trading session, when the precious metal had fallen by Rs3,700 per tola to settle at Rs426,736 on Saturday.

The price of 10 grams of 24-karat gold also witnessed an increase, climbing by Rs1,457 to reach Rs367,314 in local markets.

Market analysts said the rise in domestic gold prices reflects the positive movement in global bullion markets, where investor demand strengthened amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the global economic outlook and expectations regarding interest rate policies.

In the international market, the price of gold gained $17 per ounce, pushing the bullion rate to $4,060 per ounce, including a premium of $20. The increase in global prices was mirrored in Pakistan’s local market, where gold rates are largely influenced by international trends and fluctuations in the value of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar.

Meanwhile, silver prices also registered a notable increase. The price of silver per tola rose by Rs54, reaching Rs6,291 in the domestic market.

    Sri Lankan court sentences two former security chiefs to death over Easter bombings

    A special court in Sri Lanka has sentenced two former senior security officials to death after finding them guilty of failing to prevent the devastating Easter Sunday bombings that killed 279 people in 2019. The ruling marks one of the country’s most significant legal decisions related to the attacks, which also claimed the lives of 45 foreign nationals and injured more than 500 others. The three judge bench ruled by majority that former police chief Pujith Jayasundara and former defence ministry secretary Hemasiri Fernando neglected their responsibilities despite receiving advance warnings about the possibility of extremist attacks. The court concluded that their failure to act contributed directly to one of the deadliest terrorist incidents in Sri Lanka’s history. Jayasundara, 66, and Fernando, 76, were taken into judicial custody following the verdict. Although both have been sentenced to death, they have the right to challenge the ruling before Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court. They will remain in custody until they are granted bail during the appeals process. Despite the sentence, executions are unlikely to take place. Sri Lanka has not carried out a death sentence since 1976 and has maintained an unofficial moratorium on capital punishment for decades. Government figures presented to parliament earlier this year showed that around 800 prisoners are currently on death row, with most death sentences later reduced to life imprisonment. Friday’s ruling overturned an earlier decision that had cleared both men of criminal responsibility. In 2022, a lower court acquitted the former officials, but prosecutors appealed the verdict, leading to a fresh review of the case before the special fast track court. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence showing that Indian intelligence agencies had warned Sri Lankan authorities on April 4, 2019 about the possibility of suicide attacks by extremist groups. The warning came more than two weeks before the coordinated bombings on April 21, yet the court found that adequate preventive measures were never taken. The Easter Sunday attacks targeted three churches during religious services and three luxury hotels across the country. The coordinated explosions shocked Sri Lanka and drew international condemnation, becoming one of the country’s worst terrorist attacks since the end of its civil war. Both Jayasundara and Fernando were arrested later in 2019 and spent four months in custody before being released on bail. In a separate civil case, they were ordered to pay 125 million Sri Lankan rupees in compensation to victims and survivors for failing to fulfil their duties. Prosecutors argued that the negligence of the two senior officials amounted to an extremely serious offence because they ignored credible intelligence that could have prevented the attacks. They initially sought murder convictions, claiming their failure to respond to the warnings resulted in hundreds of avoidable deaths. The court ultimately convicted both men of negligence leading to the deaths of 279 people. During earlier parliamentary investigations, Jayasundara and Fernando testified that then President Maithripala Sirisena had not followed established national security procedures before the attacks. They claimed weaknesses in communication and decision making at the highest levels of government contributed to the failure to respond effectively to the intelligence warnings. The verdict is expected to renew debate over accountability for the Easter Sunday bombings and the responsibilities of senior officials in protecting national security. Families of the victims have repeatedly demanded justice and greater transparency over the events leading up to the attacks, while the case remains one of the most closely watched legal proceedings in Sri Lanka’s recent history.

    MUZAFFARABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) police on Thursday alleged that eight highway police personnel deployed for election duty had been “abducted” by the proscribed Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), as tensions continue to simmer across the region. Police spokesperson SSP Khawar Ali Shaukat made the allegation during a televised press conference in Rawalakot, claiming that the personnel were being held by members of the group and had been subjected to what he described as “brutal abuse”. According to the spokesperson, the security personnel were attacked while carrying out their election-related duties. He claimed the officials’ families had also been threatened, allegedly being warned that the personnel would be killed if the protesters’ demands were not accepted. “We will not allow pressure to be exerted over the lives of these officials,” Shaukat said, calling for the immediate release of the personnel. He warned that authorities would take action if the officials were harmed, their release was obstructed or their families continued to receive threats. The police spokesperson also rejected the perception that the JAAC was a peaceful movement, alleging that recent incidents showed the group was willing to use violence to challenge the state’s authority and institutions. “The state is not weak,” he said, adding that authorities had exercised restraint despite the escalating tensions. Shaukat also appealed to residents to distance themselves from the group and urged parents to monitor their children, alleging that propaganda was being used to encourage young people to participate in unrest. His remarks came as AJK continues to hold elections in phases amid heightened security concerns. The region has witnessed weeks of demonstrations led by the JAAC, which has been demanding, among other things, the abolition of 12 seats in the local legislature reserved for refugees from Indian-held Kashmir. Tensions escalated on July 28 when clashes were reported between protesters and law enforcement personnel in Rawalakot and Mirpur. The violence reportedly resulted in several casualties and further intensified the political and security situation. The government has also accused elements it describes as militants of exploiting the unrest and pursuing a foreign agenda, alleging Indian financial backing. Last week, AJK Information Secretary Muhammad Rashid Hanif said seven law enforcement personnel, including police and Rangers officials, had been killed during the recent unrest. Meanwhile, Thursday’s police statement has placed renewed focus on the safety of personnel deployed for election duties. Shaukat called on the JAAC to release the eight officials and warned that any further violence against state employees would trigger a firm response under the law and Constitution. The allegations have not been independently verified, and the JAAC’s response to the police claims was not included in the report.

    Vicky Kaushal is reportedly preparing for one of the most demanding physical transformations of his career as he gears up to play the legendary warrior sage Parashurama in the upcoming mythological film Mahavatar. According to recent reports, the actor will undergo an intensive fitness programme that includes gaining more than 25 kilograms to achieve the larger-than-life physique required for the role. As reported by Mid-Day, Kaushal is set to reunite with celebrity fitness coach Tejas Lalwani, who previously helped him transform for the historical blockbuster Chhaava. The actor reportedly plans to begin training in September, nearly three months before the film goes on floors in December. The makers are said to be aiming for a transformation even more challenging than the one he underwent for Chhaava. For Chhaava, Kaushal increased his weight from 80 kg to 105 kg to portray Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. However, Mahavatar will reportedly require an even bigger and more muscular frame to accurately portray Parashurama, one of Hindu mythology’s most powerful warrior sages. According to the report, the character demands a commanding screen presence and the physical strength to convincingly perform intense action sequences involving the iconic parashu (battle axe). The report states that Kaushal’s preparation will focus on three key areas: training, nutrition and recovery. Fitness coach Tejas Lalwani and nutritionist Alkesh Sharotri have reportedly designed a rigorous programme to help the actor build size and strength while maintaining overall fitness. His workout routine is expected to revolve around compound exercises, including squats, deadlifts, bench presses and pull-ups, with the intensity gradually increasing over the training period. Alongside the workouts, Kaushal is reportedly expected to consume an additional 250 to 500 calories daily, following a protein-rich diet that includes nuts, dairy products and whole grains to support healthy muscle gain. Recovery is also expected to play a crucial role in the transformation. According to the report, Kaushal will follow a strict recovery schedule that includes eight hours of sleep every night and 48-hour rest periods for each muscle group to minimise fatigue and maximise muscle growth during the demanding preparation. Mahavatar reunites Kaushal with Tejas Lalwani after their successful collaboration on Chhaava, a performance that earned widespread praise for the actor’s commitment to physically embodying the Maratha ruler. The upcoming film is expected to present an even greater challenge as Kaushal steps into a mythological role requiring extraordinary physical presence. While Mahavatar remains one of his most anticipated future projects, Kaushal’s next major theatrical release will be Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama Love & War, scheduled to arrive in cinemas on January 21, 2027.
