High Commissioner Tipu Usman inaugurates Quaid-e-A…

LONDON: Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Tipu Usman, inaugurated an art exhibition titled “Legacy Beyond Time”, celebrating the life, vision and enduring legacy of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, at the historic National Liberal Club, where the founder of Pakistan was once a member.

The exhibition was organised by the Mont Rose Foundation in collaboration with the Pakistan High Commission, London, as part of the commemorative events marking the 150th birth anniversary of Quaid-e-Azam, being celebrated this year.

Featuring a collection of watercolour paintings by renowned artist Amera Rashid, the exhibition attracted a large gathering of British and Pakistani admirers of Quaid-e-Azam, who viewed artistic depictions reflecting his leadership, statesmanship and contribution to the creation of Pakistan.

Delivering the keynote address, High Commissioner Tipu Usman said Quaid-e-Azam firmly believed in the rule of law, reasoned argument, dialogue and political negotiation despite political differences. He said Jinnah’s legacy was not merely about remembering the struggle that led to the creation of Pakistan, but also about understanding the principles, democratic values and vision that guided that historic movement.

The High Commissioner praised the efforts of Bilal Sheikh, Chief Executive of the Mont Rose Foundation, for organising the exhibition and for commissioning a permanent portrait of Quaid-e-Azam, now displayed at the National Liberal Club.

Speaking on the occasion, Bilal Sheikh described it as a privilege to host the exhibition at such a prestigious venue closely associated with Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He said Quaid-e-Azam’s vision had inspired millions across generations and noted that the National Liberal Club was a place where Jinnah frequently held meetings during his time in London. He reaffirmed the Mont Rose Foundation’s commitment to continuing the promotion of Jinnah’s ideals and legacy through similar initiatives.

Other speakers paid tribute to Quaid-e-Azam’s exceptional legal acumen, unwavering commitment to democratic principles and his leadership in the struggle that culminated in the independence of Pakistan.

The exhibition, “Legacy Beyond Time,” forms part of a wider series of cultural and educational events being organised jointly by the Pakistan High Commission, London and the Mont Rose Foundation to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the founder of Pakistan

    Imran Khan receives eight books in jail

    PTI founder Imran Khan has been provided with eight books in jail following directions from the Islamabad High Court. A deputy superintendent of the jail said the prison authorities received the eight books from the Islamabad High Court. The court had directed the authorities to provide the books to Imran Khan. The jail administration subsequently handed all eight books over to the PTI founder. However, Khan returned four of the books to the jail authorities. He reportedly told officials that he had already read those books. The remaining books were kept with him after being delivered by the prison administration. The development comes after the Islamabad High Court issued directions regarding access to reading material for the former prime minister. The jail authorities confirmed that the court’s instructions regarding the books had been followed. Officials did not provide further details about the titles of the books that were delivered or returned. The provision of books gives Khan access to additional reading material during his time in prison.

    According to a landmark report released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United States just experienced the single hottest month in modern history. Throughout July, atmospheric heat domes locked across vast stretches of the country. The heatwaves drove mean temperatures in the Lower 48 states to an unprecedented average of 76.9 degrees Fahrenheit (24.9 degrees Celsius). This mark sits an incredible 3.3 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th-century norm, effectively surpassing the legendary heatwaves of July 1936 during the Dust Bowl and July 2012. The data underscores an extraordinary, nationwide thermal surge. Record-breaking conditions spared virtually no region, with all 48 contiguous states logging temperatures well above their long-term monthly averages. States in the Mountain West, the Southwest, the Northern Plains, and the Southeast bore the brunt of the extreme conditions. Across the country, over 600 monthly high-temperature records fell or were matched. 13 individual states logged a July that ranked among their top five hottest ever recorded. Wyoming stood out at the epicenter of the continental heat peak, registering its warmest month on record with temperatures soaring 5.1 degrees Fahrenheit higher than historical baselines. While intense afternoon conditions pushed daytime maximum temperatures to an average of 89.5 degrees Fahrenheit, ranking as the sixth-warmest daytime average in 132 years of record-keeping. Meteorologists emphasize that nighttime behavior represented the most dangerous aspect of this climatic event. Overnights offered almost no thermal relief, as minimum temperatures averaged 64.2 degrees Fahrenheit across the nation. This smashed the previous overnight low-temperature record set in July 2022 by a staggering 0.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Climatologists point out that uncomfortably warm nights are one of the most definitive signatures of human-driven climate change. High concentrations of greenhouse gases trap outgoing longwave radiation close to the Earth’s surface long after sunset. The physiological and infrastructural consequences of these elevated nighttime floors were felt severely across North America. When overnight temperatures fail to cool sufficiently, human bodies, livestock, and urban infrastructure lose their ability to recover from daytime heat stress. The sustained thermal stress strained municipal power grids, triggered localized water delivery alerts, and contributed to scores of heat-related illnesses and hospitalizations. In several western jurisdictions, compounding factors such as lingering droughts and severe heat domes fueled destructive wildfires, while critical water reservoirs like Lake Mead dipped toward critical levels.   Interestingly, temperature patterns across non-contiguous states diverged sharply from the mainland. Hawaii recorded near-average daytime conditions while Alaska experienced its coolest July since 2008, accompanied by record rainfall in regions around Anchorage. However, across the Lower 48, the pattern remained stubbornly hot and generally dry. As federal forecasters look ahead, climate projections suggest that the thermal pressure will persist, with above-average temperatures expected to hold firm across much of the central and southern United States well into late summer.

    Two police personnel martyred in Lahore’s badami…

    Two police personnel were martyred after armed assailants opened fire on them in Lahore’s Badami Bagh area on Thursday evening, according to police officials. The victims were identified as Sub-Inspector Adeel and Head Constable Asad, both of whom were deployed at Lorry Adda police station. Police said the two officers were attacked within the jurisdiction of Badami Bagh police station. According to initial reports, armed assailants opened fire on the officers before fleeing the scene. Both personnel suffered critical bullet injuries and later succumbed to their wounds. Police have identified Rehan Butt as the alleged main suspect in the attack, while efforts are continuing to determine the identities and whereabouts of his suspected accomplices. DIG Operations Faisal Kamran reached the scene with a heavy police contingent and supervised the initial investigation. The area was cordoned off as investigators collected evidence and examined the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The DIG directed the SP City to ensure the immediate arrest of those involved. Police teams have been deployed across different locations and are conducting raids to apprehend Rehan Butt and the other suspects. Preliminary police information described Butt as a suspected dangerous shooter who was already wanted by authorities. Investigators are also examining whether the attack could be connected to an earlier police encounter involving his brother, Faizan Butt. Police said the case was being investigated from all angles and that further information would be released as the investigation progresses. DIG Kamran described the deaths of the two officers as a tragic loss, saying they had sacrificed their lives while carrying out their duties. He vowed that police would continue their efforts until all suspects were arrested. Punjab Inspector General of Police Abdul Karim also took notice of the incident and sought a report from the Lahore DIG Operations. He directed police to use all available resources to arrest those responsible. The IG paid tribute to the martyred officers and ordered that their bereaved families receive complete care and welfare support. The Lahore Badami Bagh firing has prompted an intensified police operation, with investigators continuing raids and gathering evidence to establish the full circumstances behind the deadly attack.

The state government’s security department has also reportedly been informed, with the family seeking appropriate security measures. The complaint stated that unknown individuals had previously sent letters containing offensive and objectionable remarks about the former India captain. At first, the messages were believed to be linked to personal resentment or someone unhappy with Ganguly. The situation took a more serious turn when two recent letters addressed to Sourav and Dona Ganguly reportedly contained threatening language targeting not only the couple but also people working with them. Police sources said their preliminary inquiry indicated that the threatening letters had been sent by courier to Ganguly’s residence. Authorities have assured Ganguly’s personal assistant that an investigation is underway and that necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of the former cricketer and his family. Ganguly, one of India’s most influential cricket figures, served as national captain before later becoming BCCI president.     Shahid Afridi picks up trash, urges tourists to keep north clean

According to him, practical support for local communities plays an equally important role in solving the problem long-term. To make disposal easier for visitors, Afridi said he’s arranging dustbins to be placed around the area. He mentioned that around four to five bins would soon be set up to help tackle the litter issue directly. Beyond the environmental message, Afridi also used his visit to highlight requests from local children. He said kids in the area had approached him with one simple wish, a cricket pitch where they could finally play the sport they love. He said he would try to get the pitch built before Pakistan’s Independence Day on August 14, calling it a small but meaningful gesture. Afridi added that the children had specifically asked for this before the national holiday. The move reflects Afridi’s continued involvement in community-focused efforts, particularly those aimed at supporting children and improving facilities in underserved regions.
