Historic floods leave at least six dead in Indiana

At least six people have died in the US state of Indiana after severe storms brought record-breaking rainfall and triggered widespread flooding.

Authorities said several areas received more than 11 inches of rain over two days. The heavy rainfall caused the White River to rise rapidly, flooding communities and forcing large-scale rescue operations.

More than 90 people and 45 pets were rescued from flooded areas, according to local authorities. The worst flooding was reported along the White River, stretching from Hamilton County towards the northern suburbs of Indianapolis.

Several neighbourhoods were left under water. In Indianapolis, floodwaters submerged vehicles and reached residential properties. Some residents used kayaks and small boats to move through streets that had turned into waterways.

The White River rose above 24 feet in Anderson and Noblesville. The level exceeded records set during the major flooding of 1913, highlighting the severity of the disaster.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett declared a local emergency and urged people living near the river to leave their homes if authorities advised evacuation.

Emergency officials described the flooding as an unprecedented event. Marion County Emergency Management director Jacob Spence said the scale of the disaster was unlike anything recently experienced in the area.

Several counties reported storm-related deaths. One woman, aged 58, was found dead in Delaware County after apparently attempting to drive through floodwaters.

Authorities also confirmed fatalities in Jennings, White, Porter and La Porte counties.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun said he had spoken with US President Donald Trump about the disaster. He said a request for a federal emergency declaration was being processed to speed up assistance for affected communities.

Braun expressed sympathy for the families who lost loved ones and urged residents to remain cautious. He warned people to stay away from flooded roads and fast-moving water.

The National Weather Service continued to issue flood warnings across parts of central Indiana. Officials warned that water levels were still rising in some locations.

More severe weather was also expected. Emergency authorities urged residents to monitor official warnings and avoid unnecessary travel.

The storms were not limited to Indiana. Tornadoes, intense rainfall and flash flooding affected several parts of the US Midwest. Damage was reported across a broad area stretching from the Chicago region towards western Pennsylvania.

The mosque attacks have added another disturbing chapter to a widening cycle of violence in the West Bank, where clashes, arson attacks and raids have intensified since the Gaza war began in October 2023. The latest incidents also follow a deadly confrontation in Tal on Friday, where four Palestinians and two Israelis were killed. The aftermath has triggered further arrests, raids and attacks in surrounding Palestinian communities. With tensions already running high, the torching of places of worship has raised fresh fears that the latest violence could fuel further retaliation and deepen an already volatile situation across the occupied territory.

    Sindh announces August 4 school holiday

      The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department has announced that all public and private educational institutions across the province will remain closed on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in observance of the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA). According to an official notification issued by the department, the holiday will be observed on 20th Safar 1448 AH, marking the annual commemoration of Chehlum. The decision applies to all government and privately managed schools operating under the administrative control of the School Education and Literacy Department throughout Sindh. The notification stated that the closure was approved following a decision taken during a meeting of the provincial Steering Committee held on February 12, 2026. It confirmed that all educational institutions under the department’s jurisdiction would remain closed on August 4 to facilitate the observance of the religious occasion. Chehlum is observed every year on the 20th of Safar and marks the conclusion of the 40-day mourning period following the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), his family members, and companions in the historic Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The occasion holds immense religious significance for Muslims, particularly for those who participate in mourning gatherings and commemorative processions held across the country. As part of the annual observances, mourning processions featuring Alam, Tazia, and Zuljinah are expected to take place in several cities and towns across Sindh. Thousands of devotees traditionally participate in these events to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala. In light of the large public gatherings expected during Chehlum, the Sindh Home Department has also announced additional security measures aimed at maintaining law and order throughout the province. A day before the school holiday notification was issued, the Home Department imposed a province-wide ban on pillion riding for the day of Chehlum. The temporary restriction is intended to strengthen security arrangements and minimise the risk of any untoward incidents during the religious processions and gatherings. Authorities have clarified that the ban forms part of a broader security plan implemented each year for major religious occasions. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the measures while facilitating the safe conduct of mourning events. In a separate notification, the Sindh Home Department also announced the extension of Section 144 across the province for another month. The renewed restrictions came into effect on August 1 and will remain in force as part of ongoing efforts to preserve public order. Under Section 144, several activities have been prohibited throughout Sindh, including wall chalking, public rallies, demonstrations, and the open display of weapons. The restrictions are designed to prevent any activities that could disrupt peace or pose security concerns during the mourning period. The provincial government has urged citizens to cooperate with the authorities and follow the issued guidelines to help ensure that Chehlum observances are conducted peacefully and securely across Sindh.

    Imran said party ignored his orders: Afridi

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and Member of the National Assembly Iqbal Afridi has claimed that jailed former prime minister Imran Khan told him during their last meeting that members of the party were not following his instructions. According to a video statement shared on social media by PTI Senator Faisal Javed Khan, Afridi said he met Imran Khan at Adiala Jail, where the former premier allegedly expressed frustration over the party’s internal affairs. Afridi claimed that Imran Khan told him, “Iqbal, the party is not listening to me. I say this with my hand on the Holy Quran.” The PTI lawmaker said he responded by expressing his loyalty to the party founder. Afridi claimed he told Imran Khan that anyone betraying him deserved the strongest condemnation, while referring to a political slogan from the past. Afridi further said that he never had another meeting with Imran Khan after that conversation. He claimed that if he had met him again and been told the names of those allegedly disobeying party instructions, the situation would have been different. In the video statement, Afridi also made controversial remarks, saying that if he is allowed another meeting and Imran Khan identifies individuals who are not following his directives, he would not spare them. He used threatening language while making the statement. The remarks have drawn attention on social media, although there has been no official response from PTI leadership or other party figures regarding Afridi’s claims. Imran Khan has also not publicly commented on the statements attributed to him.
