Balochistan lawmakers condemn Nushki killings

Women parliamentarians in Balochistan have strongly condemned the killing of a mother and daughter in Nushki.

The victims were reportedly killed after militants entered their home. The lawmakers described the incident as deeply tragic.

They said the attack was also against Baloch traditions and social values. They expressed concern over the targeting of civilians, especially women.

Speaking at a press conference in Quetta, Balochistan government adviser Meena Majeed said the victims were identified as Bibi Hanifa and Hafsa.

She alleged that the two women were killed by militants linked to what the authorities describe as Fitna al-Hindustan.

Majeed questioned why the mother and daughter were targeted. She asked what their crime was.

She said ordinary Baloch citizens were now facing threats from militants. She also expressed concern about the targeting of women.

Majeed said the government and security forces were continuing operations against militants in the province.

She assured that those involved in the Nushki attack would be identified and brought before the law. She said the government would continue efforts to protect civilians.

Balochistan Assembly Deputy Speaker Ghazala also condemned the incident. She said women parliamentarians would not remain silent over the killing of the mother and daughter.

Ghazala stressed that women must be protected everywhere. She said their safety should remain a priority under all circumstances.

Provincial Education Minister Raheela Durrani also expressed strong concern over the incident.

Durrani questioned the message being sent about Balochistan when women were targeted and killed. She said such incidents damage the image of the province and create fear among local communities.

The women lawmakers said violence against civilians could not be tolerated. They called for effective action against those responsible for the killings.

They also stressed the need for stronger security measures to protect women and other vulnerable citizens.

The lawmakers expressed solidarity with the victims’ families. They said the government and security institutions must ensure that those responsible for the attack face justice.

Hundreds arrested in France as destructive wildfires spread across Europe

European emergency services are battling fierce wildfires triggered by a record-breaking heatwave, with French authorities arresting nearly 500 individuals on suspicion of starting blazes since July 1. France’s interior ministry reported that 474 people, including 183 minors, have been detained, with approximately 70% suspected of intentional arson. In south-west France, a rapid blaze in the Landes region consumed nearly 1,100 hectares of pine forest in under 24 hours, prompting the emergency evacuation of more than 525 residents from the village of Luglon. The severe weather conditions have caused destruction and displacement across multiple European countries. In Croatia, a gale-driven wildfire swept through the coastal tourist town of Lokva Rogoznica, leaving one person dead, 40 injured, and forcing 1,200 people to evacuate to emergency shelters. In western Germany, over 2,000 residents fled the village of Gey as a forest fire advanced, while emergency crews faced additional hazards from detonating Second World War ammunition buried in the terrain. Elsewhere on the continent, military personnel in north-east Spain evacuated the historical remains of three 11th-century kings from the San Juan de la Peña monastery as flames threatened the site. In northern Greece, a fleet of small boats rescued approximately 500 holidaymakers stranded on beaches along the Halkidiki peninsula after a two-mile fire front threatened local resorts. Firefighters in the UK also faced severe conditions, as wildfires across the West Midlands destroyed several residential properties.

Canada suspends trade talks with US over 50% tarif…

OTTAWA: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced the suspension of trade negotiations with the United States after Washington moved to impose a 50 per cent tariff on certain Canadian imports, escalating tensions between the two North American trading partners. The tariff decision, covering Canadian goods worth an estimated $20 billion, has raised concerns about the future of economic relations between the two countries. The new duties were announced as part of broader US efforts to secure more favourable terms for American trade and address what Washington considers unfair trading practices. The US Customs authorities have also issued guidance regarding the additional duties on selected Canadian products, signalling that businesses on both sides of the border could soon face higher costs and increased uncertainty. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada had refused to finalise a trade agreement and continued to take retaliatory measures against American interests. He said Washington had offered Canada more favourable access to the US market but had not received the concessions it expected. The Canadian government, however, has rejected the suggestion that sufficient progress has been made in the negotiations. Carney said the talks had failed to deliver the results required to protect Canadian interests and meet the targets set for his government. “If the United States imposes a 50 per cent tariff, Canada will impose tariffs of equal value,” Carney said, signalling that Ottawa was prepared to respond firmly rather than accept what it considers an unfair trade arrangement. The dispute marks another difficult chapter in the economic relationship between the two neighbours, whose economies are deeply connected through cross-border trade and supply chains. Industries ranging from manufacturing and agriculture to energy and consumer goods could be affected if the tariff measures remain in place. Businesses are now watching closely for signs of further escalation, particularly because higher import duties can increase the cost of products and disrupt established supply chains. The latest development also puts pressure on both governments to return to the negotiating table. While Ottawa has suspended the talks, the economic consequences of a prolonged tariff confrontation could provide an incentive for both sides to seek a compromise. For now, Carney’s announcement has hardened Canada’s position, while Washington’s tariff threat has added fresh uncertainty to one of the world’s most important bilateral trading relationships. The coming days are expected to determine whether the dispute develops into a wider trade confrontation or pushes both sides back toward negotiations.

US ‘locked and loaded’ as Iran talks continue

US President Donald Trump has said Washington is engaged in direct talks with Iran, signalling that diplomacy remains active despite rising tensions in the Middle East. However, he warned that the United States remains fully prepared for military action if negotiations fail. Speaking at the White House, Trump said discussions with Tehran are ongoing and described Iranian officials as becoming “very serious” in the negotiations. He stressed that while the US is not rushing to reach an agreement, preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon remains a top priority. The US president also stated that a previously mentioned “massive” military strike against Iran may not be necessary if diplomatic efforts produce results. Nevertheless, he made it clear that American forces remain on high alert and are fully prepared to respond if required. Trump said senior administration officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, are involved in the ongoing diplomatic contacts with Iran. He did not provide further details about the negotiations or any possible timeline for an agreement. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded by saying Tehran would not be intimidated by threats or external pressure. Speaking during a regional meeting in Kyrgyzstan, he said Iran would continue defending its national interests and would not change its policies under pressure. Meanwhile, regional tensions remain high. Air raid sirens were reported in Bahrain as Iran claimed it continued targeting US military bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan. The situation has added to concerns over a wider conflict in the Gulf region. The Saudi-led coalition also announced military operations against Houthi positions in Yemen. Coalition officials said the strikes targeted military sites, while Houthi media reported damage to telecommunications and port facilities in Hodeidah and claimed that one civilian was injured. Violence also escalated in the occupied West Bank, where clashes involving Israeli settlers and Palestinians left several people dead. Rights groups have urged the international community to take immediate steps to prevent further violence and protect civilians.

Returning Ben Stokes hits gutsy century on comebac…

Ben Stokes grabbed the headlines once again with a typically gutsy century on his return to competitive action for the first time since retiring from Test cricket three weeks ago. The all-rounder defied severe cramp to help Durham beat Derbyshire in the One-Day Cup, playing his first List A game for his county for nearly 12 years. Stokes displayed all of his hallmark grit as he battled repeated bouts of cramp, collapsing in pain as he reached his fifty, to drag his side to their target of 257. Earlier, he had bowled nine overs but failed to take a wicket as Derbyshire’s Martin Andersson’s well-measured century formed the backbone of the Falcons’ 256-9. Despite a clash with the opening day of this year’s Hundred competition, the prospect of seeing Stokes in action for the first time since his international retirement meant hundreds more eyeballs were on the action at the County Ground. Batting at four, Stokes found himself at the crease with Durham in trouble after Ben Aitchison’s early burst had removed both openers with just 24 runs on the board. After a measured start, the 35-year-old moved through the gears before showing the first signs of cramp as he neared his half-century, which came up with his fifth four in 71 balls. In the midst of repeated bouts of treatment from the physio, Stokes added 74 with Will Rhodes, 66 with Colin Ackermann, 52 with Ollie Robinson, and 41 with captain Kasey Aldridge to break the back of the chase with an innings that showed the character synonymous with many of his knocks for England. His hundred, the 10th of his List A career, was a stunning domestic return and sealed a five-wicket win for Durham. The innings was a reminder of Stokes’ enduring quality and his ability to perform under pressure, even as he battles physical challenges. His return to domestic cricket has been eagerly anticipated, and his performance against Derbyshire suggests that he remains a force to be reckoned with in the game. Stokes’ retirement from international cricket at the end of last month marked the end of an era for England, but his continued presence in domestic cricket ensures that fans will still have the opportunity to witness his brilliance. His century for Durham is a testament to his resilience and his love for the game, and it will be a source of inspiration for his teammates and fans alike. As the domestic season continues, Stokes’ form will be closely watched, with many hoping to see more of his trademark performances. His return to action has already provided one of the highlights of the season, and there is every expectation that he will continue to deliver memorable moments for Durham and cricket fans across the country.
