Late GCU physicist’s family endows Rs14m for scholarships

LAHORE: The family of the late Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq, a distinguished physicist and an unsung hero of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, has donated Rs14 million to establish 14 golden scholarships at Government College University (GCU) Lahore.

According to details, the endowment will fund 14 scholarships, worth Rs1 million each, for BS and MPhil students at the university’s Centre for Advanced Studies in Physics (CASP) and Department of Economics. The scholarships were sponsored by Mr. Rizwan-ul-Haque Rana and his family to honour his brother, Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq, who devoted his 60-year career to teaching and research at GCU-CASP.

Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq, who passed away on Nov 23, 2023, completed his MSc in Physics from GC Lahore in 1962. He was a direct student of Prof. Dr. Rafi Muhammad Chaudhary, the founder of CASP and widely regarded as the father of nuclear physics in Pakistan.

Prof. Faizan played a pivotal role in training 45 Old Ravians who were part of the 150-member expert team that launched Pakistan’s atomic programme on May 28, 1998. He also prepared the PC-1 for the installation of a second Pelletron Accelerator at CASP in 2009.

GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Omer Chaudhry commended the family’s philanthropy, stating: “Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq’s legacy goes beyond his immense scientific contributions; it lives on in the generations of students he mentored. This generous endowment ensures that his mission of empowering young scholars will continue uninterrupted. We are deeply grateful to Mr. Rizwan-ul-Haque Rana and Mrs. Eloisa Rana for this noble cause, which will profoundly support our talented students in CASP.”

The scholarships at GCU Lahore have been categorised into the Prof. Faizan Ul Haq Golden Scholarship, the Shah Begum & Ghulam Dastgir Golden Scholarship, and the Mr. Rizwan Ul Haque Rana & Mrs. Eloisa Rana Golden Scholarship.

In addition to the endowment at GCU Lahore, the family has also established six golden scholarships, backed by a Rs6 million endowment, for physics students at Government College Women University (GCWU) Sialkot.

Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir, former GCU Vice Chancellor and current Vice Chancellor of GCWU Sialkot, said Prof. Faizan believed in combining theoretical physics with real hands-on experience, training students in techniques ranging from glass blowing and spot welding to fabricating nuclear detectors.

“He was an unsung hero who produced skilled, trained, talented, and well-groomed students,” Dr. Bashir stated. “This tremendous contribution to such a noble cause confirms that his good work will continue shaping the futures of thousands of students.”

Mir Raza’s father says new probe is moving in ri…

KARACHI: The father of young Karachi resident Mir Raza has expressed confidence in the newly formed investigation team. He said he felt, for the first time in 13 days, that the investigation was moving in the right direction. Mir Raza’s parents, lawyer Jibran Nasir and members of the new investigation team visited locations connected to the case. The visit was aimed at reviewing important points and gathering information that could help investigators understand what happened. Jibran Nasir said the family had identified several important locations on its own. These locations were later shown to the police. He said Mir Raza’s parents were cooperating fully with the investigators and answering their questions. Nasir said the investigation team was waiting for the results of samples collected during the post-mortem examination. He said additional samples obtained after the exhumation had also been sent to a forensic laboratory. The lawyer said the family now believed that an honest and serious officer was handling the investigation. He said the family had earlier faced difficulties in getting the matter investigated properly. Mir Raza’s father, Mir Hussain, said the family still wanted clear answers about his son’s death. He said the exact circumstances surrounding the incident had not yet been established. According to him, the initial investigation should have been more effective. He said timely and proper action at the beginning could have taken the case to a different stage. Mir Hussain said the new investigation team was listening to the family’s concerns. He said investigators were considering the information provided by the parents. The family, he added, now had greater confidence in the process. He said the main objective was to establish what happened to Mir Raza and how the incident took place. The family wanted every aspect of the case to be examined. Mir Hussain said Mir Raza’s kitchen was located around half a kilometre from the site of the incident. He also said information about three suspicious individuals had already been shared with the police. The victim’s father further alleged that the previous investigation team had not properly shared details of the inquiry with the family. He hoped the new team would maintain transparency and investigate the case from all possible angles. The family said it would continue cooperating with investigators. Mir Hussain said they would pursue the case as far as necessary to uncover the truth and obtain justice for Mir Raza. Investigators are now expected to examine forensic evidence, statements and other available information. The reports from the forensic laboratory could also play an important role in determining the circumstances surrounding the case.

Alliance Française de Lahore exhibits ‘What…

LAHORE — The gallery at Alliance Française de Lahore opened its doors to art enthusiasts on August 10, 2026. The exhibition presented “What’s Remains”  curated by Anne Sophie Français. The evening paired thought-provoking artworks installations with a lively Kathak dance showcase. The multidisciplinary art offered attendees a rich space and human experience. The art exhibition was curated as a inquiry into what lingers after a place is traversed or a voice is silenced. “What’s Remains“ features new works by three emerging Pakistani visual artists: Rabya Khalid, Sarim Syed and Yumna Salman. They worked across diverse mediums ranging from cyanotypes and charcoal drawings to intricate textile sculptures. Rabya Khalid anchors her compositions in rich cyanotype blues overlaid with soft pastels and color pencils. Rabya focuses on urban architectural features. Water towers, elevated rooftops and quiet watchtowers dominate her skyline studies. Her works cast functional city infrastructure as silent or watchful witnesses to human activity. Sarim Syed utilized delicate charcoal rendering. Sarim creates dreamlike, atmospheric landscapes that occupy the boundary between remembering and forgetting. Her works evoke the lingering sensation of places once inhabited, capturing moments suspended between presence and absence. Yumna Salman brings a tactile, social critique to the gallery space. Yumna knots loose threads onto rigid metal wire mesh. Her labor-intensive textile installations reinterpret traditional weaving techniques to question inherited social norms, gender roles and collective memory. She turned each deliberate knot into an act of quiet resistance. Following the gallery preview, the evening changed into a vibrant 7:30 PM Kathak performance. The performance featured dedicated dance students. They celebrated an intensive month of rhythm, classical movement and expressive storytelling. The fluid footwork and rhythmic precision of the dancers created a unified dialogue with the silent, lingering themes of the surrounding artwork. Alliance Française de Lahore continues to act as an essential platform for emerging talent. The institution provides artists a non-commercial environment to showcase work, inspire public dialogue and strengthen cultural ties between Pakistani and Francophone creative communities. “What’s Remains” invites viewers to engage with stories that endure through art, memory and movement.
