Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chief Munem Zafar Khan has expressed concern over the worsening civic problems in Karachi, saying that residents of the city are struggling even for basic necessities such as clean water.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Munem Zafar Khan criticized the provincial government over issues related to water supply, electricity, infrastructure, and public services. He said that the city continues to face serious challenges despite repeated promises of improvement.

The Jamaat-e-Islami leader claimed that shortly after the first drops of rain fell in Karachi, around 200 power feeders were affected, causing electricity disruptions in several areas. He questioned the performance of K-Electric, stating that despite receiving significant government support, improvements in power generation and transmission systems had not met public expectations.

Munem Zafar Khan also criticized the Sindh government over urban infrastructure issues, claiming that Karachi lacks adequate facilities and that residents are facing difficulties due to shortages of essential services.

He raised concerns about drainage problems and safety issues, stating that several people had lost their lives after falling into open gutters. He questioned why proper maintenance and safety measures had not been implemented despite repeated incidents.

The JI Karachi chief also criticized the pace of development projects, claiming that funds allocated for drainage cleaning and infrastructure improvements were often utilized shortly before the monsoon season instead of through year-round planning.

Discussing the city’s water shortage, he said that a significant portion of Karachi’s coastal population continues to face difficulties accessing water. He also raised concerns about delays in the K-IV water project, saying that the project remains crucial for meeting the city’s growing water needs.

Munem Zafar Khan further criticized delays in road and transport projects, including water pipeline work and other development schemes, alleging that political interests and poor management have affected progress.

He also mentioned health-related concerns, referring to reports of HIV cases among children and calling for accountability and improvements in healthcare systems.

The Sindh government and other relevant authorities have faced repeated criticism from opposition parties over Karachi’s civic challenges, including water shortages, electricity problems, waste management, and infrastructure development.

Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city and economic hub, continues to face pressure from rapid population growth and increasing demand for public services. Experts have emphasized the need for long-term planning, better governance, and effective implementation of development projects to address the city’s growing challenges.

    Historic floods leave at least six dead in Indiana

    At least six people have died in the US state of Indiana after severe storms brought record-breaking rainfall and triggered widespread flooding. Authorities said several areas received more than 11 inches of rain over two days. The heavy rainfall caused the White River to rise rapidly, flooding communities and forcing large-scale rescue operations. More than 90 people and 45 pets were rescued from flooded areas, according to local authorities. The worst flooding was reported along the White River, stretching from Hamilton County towards the northern suburbs of Indianapolis. Several neighbourhoods were left under water. In Indianapolis, floodwaters submerged vehicles and reached residential properties. Some residents used kayaks and small boats to move through streets that had turned into waterways. The White River rose above 24 feet in Anderson and Noblesville. The level exceeded records set during the major flooding of 1913, highlighting the severity of the disaster. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett declared a local emergency and urged people living near the river to leave their homes if authorities advised evacuation. Emergency officials described the flooding as an unprecedented event. Marion County Emergency Management director Jacob Spence said the scale of the disaster was unlike anything recently experienced in the area. Several counties reported storm-related deaths. One woman, aged 58, was found dead in Delaware County after apparently attempting to drive through floodwaters. Authorities also confirmed fatalities in Jennings, White, Porter and La Porte counties. Indiana Governor Mike Braun said he had spoken with US President Donald Trump about the disaster. He said a request for a federal emergency declaration was being processed to speed up assistance for affected communities. Braun expressed sympathy for the families who lost loved ones and urged residents to remain cautious. He warned people to stay away from flooded roads and fast-moving water. The National Weather Service continued to issue flood warnings across parts of central Indiana. Officials warned that water levels were still rising in some locations. More severe weather was also expected. Emergency authorities urged residents to monitor official warnings and avoid unnecessary travel. The storms were not limited to Indiana. Tornadoes, intense rainfall and flash flooding affected several parts of the US Midwest. Damage was reported across a broad area stretching from the Chicago region towards western Pennsylvania.

    The federal government has announced that current petroleum product prices will remain unchanged until July 27. According to sources from the Petroleum Division, petrol will continue to be sold at Rs335.18 per litre, while high-speed diesel will remain at Rs383.46 per litre. The price of kerosene oil has also been maintained at Rs301.14 per litre. This decision comes after the government introduced a daily fuel price revision mechanism on July 18 to reflect fluctuations in the international market. Since then, prices have seen multiple adjustments. On July 18, petrol became more expensive by Rs5.44 per litre and diesel by Rs31.05 per litre. Due to the closure of international markets, prices were revised on July 21, with petrol decreasing by Rs0.35 per litre while diesel increased by Rs5.71 per litre. Subsequent revisions saw petrol and diesel prices rise by Rs4.93 and Rs7.15 per litre on July 22, followed by further increases of Rs6.39 and Rs7.83 per litre on July 23. On July 24, petrol was hiked by Rs4.40 and diesel by Rs3.62 per litre. The latest decision to freeze prices until July 27 provides temporary relief to consumers after a series of increases driven by volatility in global oil markets. The daily price revision mechanism, introduced amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, aims to ensure timely adjustments to international market trends. However, the frequent changes have drawn criticism from dealers and consumers alike. The government has assured that it is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to make adjustments as needed to balance the impact on the economy and the public. The current freeze offers a brief respite before the next scheduled revision, with consumers hoping for stability in the coming days.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, the minister said most of the content being circulated was related to the banned Action Committee in Kashmir. Tarar claimed that evidence of Indian funding for elements associated with the banned Action Committee was now in the public domain. He said numerous Indian social media accounts had emerged with evidence linking them to the campaign. According to the minister, posts shared through these accounts were aimed at provoking people against the state. He alleged that social media platforms were being used to promote groups involved in mob mobilisation and attempts to take the law into their own hands. The minister said efforts had been made to encourage such elements through social media. He alleged that the campaign was designed to create unrest and chaos in Kashmir. Tarar said Pakistan’s recent successes had not been acceptable to its adversaries. He said Pakistan had achieved gains not only on the military front but also on the diplomatic front. The information minister said the government would continue defending Pakistan’s national interests on every front. He stressed that efforts to spread disinformation and destabilise the country would not be allowed to undermine Pakistan’s interests. Tarar’s remarks came amid continued debate over social media campaigns and alleged foreign influence in Pakistan’s internal affairs. The minister urged the public to remain alert to misleading content and propaganda being circulated online.
