Hobbit Heroes reunite for dinner in Cambridge

Nearly two decades after The Lord of the Rings trilogy brought them together on screen, four of Middle-earth’s most beloved hobbits have reunited for an evening of food, drinks and friendship.

Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, who famously portrayed Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took, respectively, gathered at La Royal restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on August 8.

The longtime friends spent the evening enjoying dinner, drinks and lively conversation, giving fans another glimpse of the enduring bond formed during the making of Peter Jackson’s acclaimed fantasy trilogy.

Astin shared a selfie from the gathering on social media, writing, “The band’s all here,” alongside a photo of the four actors. Monaghan also documented the reunion, jokingly captioning his own post: “Four Halflings. Three cocktails. Two desserts. ONE great night of conversation!”

The playful posts quickly delighted fans, many of whom have continued to follow the actors’ friendship long after the final chapter of the original trilogy reached theaters. Their regular reunions have become a nostalgic reminder of the close relationships that developed behind the scenes while filming The Lord of the Rings.

The quartet last appeared together as their iconic characters in 2003’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the Oscar-winning conclusion to Jackson’s trilogy. The film became a landmark in modern cinema and cemented Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin as some of fantasy’s most recognizable characters.

The reunion also arrives as excitement continues to build around the wider Lord of the Rings universe. Wood is set to return to Middle-earth as Frodo in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, once again connecting him with the franchise that transformed his career.

For fans, however, the Cambridge dinner was about more than a famous film series. The photographs offered a warm glimpse of four actors whose friendship has endured long after their journey through Middle-earth ended.

From the Shire to Cambridge, the hobbits may have left the screen years ago, but their friendship clearly remains an adventure worth celebrating.

    A 71-year-old woman in China has been praised for her extraordinary courage after rescuing a drowning man who had jumped into a river during an apparent suicide attempt. The remarkable incident, which took place in Suixi County in Anhui Province, has attracted widespread attention after authorities identified the elderly rescuer through CCTV footage. According to local reports, the incident occurred on July 13, when a man in his 30s jumped from a bridge into the river after reportedly struggling with family-related problems. Witnesses nearby quickly realized someone had fallen into the water, creating panic among those gathered at the scene. Among the bystanders was Liu Defang, a 71-year-old retired woman who was talking with friends near the bridge. As soon as she heard people shouting that someone was in the river, she rushed toward the riverbank without hesitation. Grabbing a floating rescue aid, she immediately jumped into the water to reach the struggling man. Liu later explained that she initially believed the person in the water was a child. However, after swimming closer, she discovered it was an adult man. Despite trying to rescue him, the man resisted because he reportedly did not want to be saved. Even so, Liu held onto him firmly and refused to let go. The rescue proved extremely challenging. Battling strong currents and exhaustion, Liu spent nearly 20 minutes keeping the man afloat before managing to guide him toward the riverbank. Once they reached shallow water, two nearby individuals helped pull the man safely onto dry land. After ensuring the man was safe, Liu quietly left the area without seeking recognition or praise. She later said she did not consider her actions extraordinary and chose not to tell her family because she did not want them to worry about the risks she had taken. Police later searched the surrounding area using CCTV footage to identify the mystery rescuer. After the videos were shared online, Liu’s older brother recognized her and contacted authorities, bringing her inspiring story to public attention. Liu Defang learned swimming after retirement and regularly practices yoga to stay active. Her bravery and quick response have earned admiration across China, with many people describing her as a true hero whose selfless actions saved a life when every second mattered.

She noted that these innovations could help improve agricultural productivity, reduce resource wastage, and strengthen food security while creating commercial opportunities for both countries. The US diplomat also highlighted the growing trade relationship between the two countries, revealing that US exports to Pakistan exceeded $1.5 billion in agricultural and related goods during 2025. She described the webinar as part of the US Mission’s broader strategy to promote stronger economic cooperation and expand commercial ties with Pakistan. During the discussions, Pakistani officials outlined regulatory reforms and policy initiatives designed to facilitate greater imports of American agricultural products, including soybeans, cotton, and high-quality planting seeds. They also encouraged increased US investment in farm mechanisation, biotechnology, seed development, controlled-atmosphere storage, and food processing industries.     QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring merit and transparency in public-sector recruitment, as 19 officers were appointed to the Balochistan Revenue Authority (BRA) through a selection process conducted by the Higher Education Commission. Speaking at an appointment ceremony on Tuesday, Chief Minister Bugti handed over appointment letters to the newly selected officers and congratulated them on their success. He urged them to perform their responsibilities with dedication, integrity and a strong sense of duty toward the state. The chief minister said the BRA could become an important pillar of Balochistan’s economic development by improving revenue collection and helping reduce the province’s dependence on non-developmental spending. He noted that a substantial share of provincial resources was currently being consumed by such expenditures, limiting the government’s ability to invest in public welfare. Bugti expressed hope that stronger revenue generation would provide additional resources for key sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure and other development projects. Reiterating a commitment he made after assuming office, the chief minister said government employment would not be treated as a commodity and that appointments would be based solely on merit. He cited the recruitment of more than 14,500 teachers in the Education Department as an example of the policy. He also pointed out that candidates from his own home district, Dera Bugti, were unsuccessful in the latest BRA recruitment, describing this as evidence that the selection process had remained impartial. While actors are expected to completely immerse themselves in their roles, Kriti believes that it is equally important to know when to step away from the emotional world created for a film. She also recalled times when she was personally dealing with difficult or emotionally challenging situations while having to continue working on a comedy project. Despite going through personal struggles, she still had to portray cheerful and entertaining characters in front of the camera. Kriti pointed out that actors repeatedly draw upon their own emotions while performing. They have to access different feelings and sometimes revisit difficult emotional spaces to make their performances believable. Because of this, she believes that maintaining good mental and emotional health should be an important part of an actor’s life. The actress encouraged people to find healthy ways of managing their emotions and maintaining mental balance. She suggested practices such as meditation, therapy and other activities that help individuals feel mentally grounded and emotionally stable. Kriti also shared that she personally turns to meditation from time to time and finds it beneficial. For her, taking a pause and reconnecting with herself helps maintain emotional balance, particularly after working on emotionally demanding projects. Her comments highlight a broader reality of the entertainment industry, where performers are often required to move between intense emotions and different personalities within a short period of time. While professional commitment is important, Kriti believes that taking care of one’s mental health should never be overlooked.
