‘I will not apologize’: Maulana Fazlur…

A political controversy surrounding Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has intensified after the veteran politician refused to apologize for remarks he made earlier this month regarding security issues and the role of state institutions. The comments have drawn criticism from government officials and prompted legal proceedings.

Addressing lawyers affiliated with his party on Sunday, Maulana Fazlur Rehman stated that he would not withdraw or apologize for his remarks. Instead, he argued that those who, in his view, launched a propaganda campaign against him should offer an apology.

The controversy stems from a speech delivered during a party rally in Kasur, where the JUI-F leader spoke about the deteriorating security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. During the address, he questioned calls for political workers to take up arms against militant groups, saying he would not form a private force or militia.

In the same speech, Maulana Fazlur Rehman also criticized the involvement of individuals in politics while serving in uniform, suggesting that anyone wishing to participate in politics should first leave official service and contest elections as civilians. The remarks quickly became the subject of nationwide political debate.

The speech also led to legal action. On July 15, a local court in Gujranwala issued a notice to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in response to a petition filed over the remarks. The court has sought a reply from the agency by August 17 as the matter proceeds through legal channels.

Senior members of the federal government strongly criticized the JUI-F chief’s comments. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said linking the sacrifices of Pakistan’s armed forces to their salaries was unfair and disrespectful to military personnel, particularly the families of fallen soldiers. He maintained that while political leaders have the right to criticize policies or procedures, they should avoid statements that undermine the sacrifices of security forces.

The controversy has sparked wider debate across Pakistan’s political landscape, with supporters arguing that Maulana Fazlur Rehman was expressing a political opinion on national security, while critics believe his remarks crossed acceptable boundaries.

As political reactions continue, the legal process is expected to determine whether any further action will be taken. The issue remains a prominent topic in national politics, highlighting ongoing tensions between opposition leaders and the government over security, governance, and political accountability.

Tadej Pogacar returns to Vuelta a España, eyes first career title

MONACO: Cycling superstar Tadej Pogacar is set to return to the Vuelta a España for the first time since 2019, as the Slovenian aims to capture the only Grand Tour title missing from his glittering career. His team, UAE Team Emirates, confirmed on Monday that the reigning Tour de France champion will compete in this year’s Vuelta, which begins on August 22. The announcement has immediately made the 27-year-old the overwhelming favourite for the prestigious 21-stage race, as he looks to add another milestone to an already remarkable career. Pogacar last competed in the Vuelta in 2019, where he finished an impressive third overall and claimed three stage victories, performances that introduced him to the global cycling stage. “I’m excited to say I’m going back to La Vuelta,” Pogacar said in a statement released by his team. “It was my first-ever Grand Tour back in 2019 and an amazing experience. Spain is a country I love to visit and race in, and I think the time is right to go back.” The Slovenian added that his motivation remains high following another successful Tour de France campaign and described the Vuelta as one of his biggest goals for the remainder of the season. Pogacar heads into the race with history within reach. Having already won the Tour de France this year and previously claimed the Giro d’Italia in 2024, victory in Spain would complete his collection of all three Grand Tours. He could also become only the fourth cyclist in history to win both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España in the same season. With UAE Team Emirates expected to field a strong supporting squad, Pogacar will be determined to end the year on another high and further strengthen his reputation as one of cycling’s greatest riders of the modern era. The Vuelta is expected to feature many of the sport’s leading names, but all eyes will be on Pogacar as he chases another historic achievement and bids to complete one of cycling’s rarest career accomplishments.

Arshad Nadeem to skip lausanne diamond league for …

Pakistan’s Olympic gold medallist Arshad Nadeem has decided to skip the upcoming Lausanne Diamond League and instead focus on an overseas training camp in South Africa. The 2026 Lausanne Diamond League is scheduled to take place in Switzerland on August 21. Nadeem was initially included in the event’s entry list, but he has now opted to prioritize training and preparation ahead of his upcoming international competitions. Nadeem is currently training at Punjab Stadium in Lahore and is expected to spend around two weeks training in South Africa. Reports indicate that he plans to travel to Potchefstroom once his visa arrangements are completed. The decision comes after a disappointing outing at the recent 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where Nadeem finished ninth among 12 competitors with a best throw of 77.41 metres. He failed to progress beyond the first three throws in the final. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the Commonwealth Games javelin gold medal with an impressive throw of 89.75 metres, while Nadeem was unable to defend his title at the event. Despite the setback, Nadeem remains one of Pakistan’s leading track and field athletes. He won Olympic gold in the men’s javelin throw at the Paris 2024 Olympics, producing an Olympic-record throw of 92.97 metres. The Lausanne event had initially attracted considerable attention because Nadeem was listed among a strong javelin field. His withdrawal means he will instead use the coming weeks to work on his form and conditioning in South Africa. Nadeem’s next major appearances are expected to include the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest from September 6 to 14, followed by the Asian Games. The decision to skip Lausanne appears aimed at giving the Olympic champion additional preparation time before those important competitions. For Nadeem, the South Africa training camp could provide an opportunity to address the issues exposed by his recent Commonwealth Games performance. Rather than immediately returning to competition, the javelin star will now have additional time to train and prepare for the remainder of the 2026 season. His withdrawal from Lausanne also highlights the importance of managing his competition schedule while preparing for major championships. Fans will now be watching closely to see whether the additional training helps Nadeem regain his best form in his next international appearance.

Texas governor targets Muslim airport facilities

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered a review of state grants provided to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), alleging that facilities for Muslim passengers to perform ablution and pray could amount to religious discrimination. Abbott’s office said the matter has also been referred to the US Department of Transportation for investigation and possible action. According to a statement from the governor’s office, state grants provided to entities operating airports in Texas will be reviewed to determine whether existing funding should be withdrawn or whether the airports should be denied future state funding. Abbott has argued that providing facilities specifically associated with one religion at government-owned facilities could raise concerns under religious discrimination laws. The governor’s office said DFW International Airport is planning to establish a dedicated ablution facility for Muslim passengers. At George Bush Intercontinental Airport, a similar facility has reportedly already been established, along with a designated space for prayer. Abbott has written to US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, asking the Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to immediately review the existing or proposed religious facilities at both airports. He has also called for corrective or legal action if federal authorities determine that any violations have occurred. The Texas governor maintains that both airports receive federal funding and are therefore required to comply with federal laws prohibiting discriminatory practices. In his statement, Abbott said the proposed ablution facilities appear to provide a special accommodation to a particular section of the population based on religion, which he considers potentially unlawful. He further argued that because the airports are publicly owned, government authorities cannot give preference to one religious viewpoint over others. Abbott reiterated his position on social media, saying that government facilities funded by taxpayers should not allow what he described as unlawful religious discrimination.
