Philippines school shooting livestreamed by studen…

ZAMBOANGA, Philippines: A school in the southern Philippines was plunged into panic on Tuesday after a Grade 9 student opened fire inside classrooms, killing a fellow student before taking his own life, authorities said. The attack was reportedly livestreamed through a body-worn camera, adding a disturbing dimension to an incident that has renewed concerns over school safety in the country.

The shooting occurred at a school attached to the privately run Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga city. According to a preliminary police report, the student entered the campus carrying a pistol and a rifle before firing inside two classrooms.

Zamboanga Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso said authorities confirmed that the attack had been livestreamed. Reuters said it verified footage showing the shooter entering one classroom and opening fire before switching weapons and moving to another classroom.

Police identified the victim as a male Grade 10 student. The gunman, who was a Grade 9 student, later died by suicide. Two other people were wounded, while several students suffered injuries as they attempted to flee the building during the chaos. Classes were subsequently suspended.

The motive behind the attack remained unclear. Officials said one of the weapons was a .40-caliber pistol issued by the Bureau of Customs to the shooter’s father, who is a customs official and has since been relieved of his post. A second firearm recovered from the scene was reportedly a licensed weapon belonging to the father.

The incident prompted an immediate response from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who ordered law enforcement agencies to investigate the shooting and examine measures to prevent violence in schools.

“Our schools are where we entrust our children to learn, to grow and to dream about the lives ahead of them,” Marcos said, stressing that schools should be among the safest places in the country.

The school occupies an approximately eight-hectare site and includes facilities for grade school and junior high school students. Videos verified by Reuters showed students rushing from the campus as gunshots could be heard in the background.

Tuesday’s attack comes less than two months after another school shooting in the Philippines. In June, at least three students were killed and about 20 others injured when two students opened fire at a public high school in Tacloban City.

School shootings remain relatively uncommon in the Philippines, which has regulations covering firearm ownership, including background checks and psychological evaluations. However, officials continue to face challenges from the circulation of illegal firearms.

The Zamboanga shooting also came less than 10 days after a student shooting rampage at a school near Bangkok, highlighting growing regional concerns over violence involving young people and the urgent need for stronger safeguards in educational institutions.

Nawaz Sharif summons PML-N meeting in Murree to di…

President of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Nawaz Sharif, has summoned an important party meeting in Murree on Saturday, August 15, to discuss the formation of a new government in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). According to party sources, the meeting will focus primarily on the political situation in AJK and the formation of the government following the recent elections to the AJK Legislative Assembly. Senior PML-N leaders are expected to hold detailed consultations on the party’s strategy and discuss possible arrangements for forming the government in the region. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, former Punjab Chief Minister and senior PML-N leader Hamza Shehbaz, federal ministers and other senior party leaders are expected to attend the meeting in Murree. All nine newly elected PML-N members of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly have also been invited to participate in the meeting, according to sources. Their presence is expected to be particularly important as the party leadership considers its options for government formation and seeks their input on the political situation in AJK. The meeting is likely to provide the PML-N leadership with an opportunity to assess the election results and discuss the next political steps. Party leaders are expected to deliberate on potential candidates for key positions and determine how the party will proceed with its government-formation efforts. Nawaz Sharif, as president of the PML-N, is expected to lead the consultations and seek the views of senior party figures as well as the newly elected AJK assembly members. The participation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also indicates the importance the party leadership is attaching to developments in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The political situation in AJK has gained significant attention following the elections, with political parties assessing their positions in the newly elected legislative assembly. The formation of the next government will depend on the numerical strength of the parties and the political alliances that emerge following the election results. The PML-N’s leadership meeting in Murree is therefore expected to play an important role in determining the party’s immediate political strategy in AJK. Discussions may also focus on maintaining coordination between the federal leadership, the Punjab government and the party’s elected representatives in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Sources said the meeting would involve consultations rather than a routine party gathering, with the leadership expected to carefully examine the political developments before reaching decisions on government formation. The participation of all newly elected PML-N members from AJK is also expected to help the central leadership understand the ground situation and political dynamics within the region. Their recommendations could contribute to the party’s decision-making process as it moves toward forming the next government. The Murree meeting on August 15 is consequently being viewed as a significant gathering for the PML-N, as the party leadership prepares to determine its course of action in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and coordinate its political strategy with its elected representatives.

GUJRAT: The Agriculture (Extension) Department has seized counterfeit DAP fertiliser worth more than Rs20 million during a raid at Hasan Rice Mills in Mouza Mohla, Gujrat, in what officials described as a major crackdown on the illegal fertiliser trade. The operation was conducted under the supervision of Director Agriculture (Extension) Gujrat Division Dr Irfanullah Warraich by Assistant Director Agriculture (Extension) and Assistant Controller Fertilizer Muhammad Athar Latif. During the raid, officials inspected the premises and collected samples of suspected DAP fertiliser for laboratory testing. They also sealed 1,140 bags of fertiliser, each weighing 50 kilograms, with an estimated value of Rs18.24 million. According to the Agriculture Department, laboratory analysis later confirmed that the fertiliser was counterfeit. Officials said subsequent investigations revealed that a total of 1,270 bags of fake DAP fertiliser, worth approximately Rs20.32 million, were linked to the operation. Out of these, 1,244 bags were taken into police custody as case property. A case has been registered against Muhammad Azmat and other suspects under the Punjab Fertilizer Control Act, 2025. Police also arrested Ghulam Hussain, the in-charge of Hasan Rice Mills, during the raid. The department said the crackdown was aimed at protecting farmers from substandard agricultural inputs that could adversely affect crop production and cause financial losses. Officials added that counterfeit fertilisers not only reduce crop yields but also undermine farmers’ confidence in certified agricultural products. They urged growers to purchase fertilisers only from authorised dealers and to report any suspicious products or illegal storage facilities to the Agriculture Department. The department said further investigations are underway to trace the source of the counterfeit fertiliser, identify other individuals involved in its manufacture and distribution, and determine whether similar consignments had been supplied to other markets in the region. Agriculture officials reaffirmed their commitment to continuing strict enforcement against the production, storage and sale of fake fertilisers to safeguard farmers’ interests and ensure the availability of quality agricultural inputs across Punjab.

Iran claims destruction of three US F-35 jets

The conflict between Iran and the United States intensified on Thursday after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it destroyed three US F-35 fighter jets during a missile attack on Jordan’s al-Azraq airbase, a key facility used by American forces. According to the IRGC, the attack was carried out in retaliation for a US strike on Iran’s Qeshm Island that allegedly killed members of a civilian family. Iranian officials claimed several ballistic missiles struck aircraft maintenance facilities at the base, destroying three F-35 fighter jets and severely damaging three others. The IRGC also alleged that several US military personnel and technical staff were killed in the attack. No independent confirmation of these claims has been provided by US or Jordanian authorities. The latest exchange came after the United States launched fresh overnight strikes targeting multiple locations in Iran, including Bushehr, Qeshm, Bandar Abbas, Kish and Abadan. Iranian media reported that residential areas on Qeshm Island were hit, killing three members of one family and injuring two children. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also announced that three of their personnel were killed in separate US missile attacks, vowing retaliation against what they described as American aggression. Meanwhile, Jordan said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed five Iranian missiles heading toward its territory, marking the fourth consecutive day of missile interceptions. Authorities reported no casualties or damage. Iraq also sought to distance itself from the growing conflict. A military spokesperson stated there was no evidence that recent regional attacks had been launched from Iraqi territory, while stressing that only official security forces would be responsible for the country’s defence and security. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said discussions with Omani officials aimed at reducing tensions remain ongoing in Tehran. Iranian officials blamed the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions to global shipping on US and Israeli military operations, insisting that foreign military actions had created instability in one of the world’s most important energy corridors. The IRGC also claimed two oil tankers attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz turned back after a fire broke out on one vessel. The group warned the strategic waterway would remain closed while military pressure against Iran continued. Elsewhere, Iran condemned recent US and Saudi air strikes inside Iraq, calling them violations of Iraqi sovereignty and international law. The attacks reportedly targeted Iran-aligned groups operating in the country. The United Nations expressed growing concern over the escalating hostilities. UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged all parties to end military operations immediately and return to diplomatic negotiations, warning that continued escalation could further destabilise the Middle East.
