IHC reserves decision on Imaan Mazari, Hadi Chatth…

The Islamabad High Court on Friday reserved its decision on whether petitions seeking the suspension of prison sentences awarded to lawyers and human rights activists Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and Hadi Ali Chattha can proceed.

The petitions relate to the couple’s convictions in a case involving alleged controversial social media posts under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).

The hearing was conducted by Justice Muhammad Azam Khan, who considered preliminary arguments from both the prosecution and the defence before reserving his ruling on the maintainability of the petitions.

During the proceedings, lawyers representing the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) argued that the requests for suspension of sentence had been filed too early. They maintained that the court should first decide the prosecution’s objection challenging the admissibility of the petitions before considering any request for relief.

The prosecution submitted that hearing the suspension petitions before deciding its objection would make its legal challenge ineffective. It therefore requested the court to first determine whether the petitions were legally maintainable.

Counsel for Imaan Mazari and Hadi Chattha opposed the objection and said he was ready to argue the prosecution’s application immediately. He suggested that both the objection and the suspension requests should be heard together to avoid unnecessary delays in the proceedings.

The judge advised the defence to fully prepare its arguments, observing that doing so would better protect the legal rights of the convicted lawyers. However, the defence maintained that it was prepared to proceed without delay and formally waived any request for additional preparation time.

After hearing submissions from both sides, Justice Azam Khan stated that the court would first determine whether the petitions seeking suspension of sentence were legally maintainable. Only after resolving that issue would the court consider the merits of the requests for suspension of the sentences.

At the end of the hearing, the Islamabad High Court reserved its decision on the prosecution’s objection. The ruling will determine whether the petitions can move forward for further consideration.

Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha were convicted by a sessions court earlier this year and received a combined sentence of 17 years’ imprisonment on multiple charges under PECA

Rome to host US-mediated Israel-Lebanon negotiations on southern pilot zones

Technical delegations from Israel and Lebanon will assemble in Rome from August 4 to 6 for a fresh round of United States-brokered talks designed to advance the implementation of their bilateral framework agreement. First disclosed by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and subsequently confirmed by the US State Department, the upcoming dialogue will address the expansion of designated pilot zones in southern Lebanon alongside broader border resolutions and long-term peace objectives. The core terms of the underlying framework deal, established after conflict flared between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah in March, require a cessation of hostilities, the disarming of Hezbollah, the national deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces, and a structured, phased withdrawal of Israeli forces commencing from two initial pilot areas. Negotiators aim to leverage early operational data from these initial zones to refine the broader security rollout and facilitate a progressive expansion of government control throughout the border region. The upcoming diplomatic round occurs amidst friction on the ground, with the Lebanese military recently condemning persistent Israeli artillery shelling and strikes in southern territory, cautioning that continued operations directly impede the full deployment of state troops outlined in the agreement.

The dual catalyst of changing climate and human

France is confronting unprecedented environmental devastation as wildfires swept across the nation’s forests and countryside. The fire burned over 300,000 acres. A level of destruction not witnessed in the country since the aftermath of the Second World War. The communities assess ruined homes, scorched ecosystems and degraded air quality. The French public and authorities are left with an urgent question: what is driving these catastrophic blazes? A Perfect Storm of Climate Conditions At the root of the crisis is a changing global climate driven by greenhouse gas emissions. Rising regional temperatures, combined with prolonged dry spells, have transformed expansive tracts of woodland into dry tinderbox environments. In these prolonged heatwaves, humidity drops sharply, rendering vegetation prone to rapid ignition. Under such extreme drought, even a minor spark can ignite an uncontrollable inferno within minutes. Environmental scientists emphasize that while climate conditions establish the background vulnerability, they do not act alone. Heat and drought create the ideal environment for fires to spread, but the vast majority require an initial ignition source. The Human Factor: Negligence, Accidents and Arson Official records in France reveal a shocking pattern. Approximately nine out of every ten wildfires originate from human activity.  Public concern often focuses on intentional acts of arson. However, investigators note that deliberate fire-setting accounts for only a fraction of total blazes. The overwhelming majority stem from everyday human negligence or accidents. Common accidental triggers include: Discarded Cigarettes: Unextinguished butts tossed from vehicles or thrown onto dry brush. Fire investigators refer to the rule of 30 conditions where ambient temperatures exceed 30°C (86°F), humidity drops below 30%, wind speeds stay below 30 km/h. A remaining cigarette segment retains at least 30% of its length. Under severe drought, these thresholds lower drastically, making ignition almost immediate. Infrastructure and Equipment: Sparks generated by heavy machinery, ongoing construction projects, or faulty electrical equipment operating near dry grass. Recreational Fires: Unattended outdoor barbecues and small campfires in or around forested boundaries. In response to the scale of destruction, the French Interior Ministry has taken aggressive legal action, detaining over 400 individuals suspected of initiating blazes either through reckless behavior or intentional acts. Among those apprehended are scores of minors, as well as individuals facing immediate judicial sentencing for setting fires in protected woodland zones. Mental health professionals and legal experts point out that intentional fire-starters typically fall into distinct categories, including careless individuals, opportunistic actors seeking financial gain (such as insurance payouts), pyromaniacs, or individuals seeking recognition during emergency responses. Looking Ahead: Reconstruction and Forest Adaptation The unprecedented severity of the blazes has sparked intense public debate over state readiness and resource allocation. Critics question whether preventive measures and response mechanisms were adequate for a summer marked by continuous heatwaves. Addressing the national crisis, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the necessity of adapting national forestry policy to match evolving climate realities. Rebuilding efforts will require replanting woodlands with more fire-resistant tree species rather than simply restoring vulnerable pine monocultures. As emergency crews continue to monitor remaining hotspots and brace for subsequent heatwaves, France faces a long-term strategy shift: balancing immediate enforcement against negligence with broad ecological adaptation.

Delay in NOC stalls NADRA counter at Pakistan Emba…

A proposed NADRA counter at the Pakistan Embassy in Tokyo, expected to benefit nearly 30,000 to 35,000 Pakistanis living in Japan, has remained stalled for the past three to four months due to delays in the issuance of a No Objection Certificate (NOC), despite receiving formal approval from NADRA. According to official documents, NADRA granted in-principle approval for the establishment of the counter on April 22, 2026, and requested the relevant authorities to issue the required NOC without delay. The documents stated that the counter would become operational immediately after the NOC is issued. The delay has prevented the project from moving forward, leaving thousands of overseas Pakistanis in Japan facing continued difficulties in accessing essential identity and registration services. Sources said the initiative was made possible through the persistent efforts of Overseas Pakistanis Foundation (OPF) Chairman Syed Qamar Raza Shah. During his visit to Japan in April, he met members of the Pakistani community, listened to their concerns, and identified the absence of NADRA services as one of their most pressing issues. After returning to Pakistan, Shah reportedly pursued the matter with the relevant departments and raised it at senior government levels, resulting in NADRA’s formal approval for establishing the counter at the embassy. Under the approved plan, NADRA agreed to provide biometric machines, fingerprint devices, cameras, technical support, and staff training. The Pakistan Embassy in Tokyo is responsible for providing office space, computers, internet connectivity, furniture, and other administrative facilities. Officials said all technical and administrative arrangements have already been finalised. However, the project remains on hold because the required NOC has yet to be issued by the concerned ministry. As a result, Pakistani nationals living in Japan continue to face significant challenges in obtaining or renewing national identity cards, completing family registration, biometric verification, and accessing other NADRA-related services. Members of the Pakistani community in Japan have praised Syed Qamar Raza Shah for his efforts, saying the project would likely not have reached the approval stage without his personal involvement. They urged the relevant authorities to demonstrate the same commitment by removing the remaining administrative hurdles and ensuring that the approved project is implemented without further delay. The community has also appealed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister Senator Ishaq Dar to personally intervene and direct the concerned authorities to issue the pending NOC so that the NADRA counter can be established at the Pakistan Embassy in Tokyo as soon as possible, providing long-awaited relief to thousands of overseas Pakistanis.

BJP lawmaker alleges son-in-law married 25 women

An Indian politician has accused his son-in-law of fraud after allegedly discovering that the man had married around 25 women using different identities. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Gyan Tiwari, who represents the Sevata constituency in Uttar Pradesh, filed a complaint against his son-in-law’s family. He alleged that his daughter was deceived into marrying a man who had concealed his alleged criminal background and previous relationships. According to the complaint, Tiwari’s daughter Pragya married Prakhar Trivedi in 2024. Prakhar is the son of Anuj Trivedi, a resident of Chandrawal. Tiwari alleged that Anuj presented himself during the marriage arrangements as a well-known real estate businessman based in Mumbai. He claimed that the family had also received positive information about the prospective groom from local sources and influential people before approving the marriage. However, the lawmaker said his family later learned about Prakhar’s alleged activities through social media and other sources. Tiwari alleged that Prakhar had used fake identities to establish relationships with women in different Indian states, particularly Maharashtra. He further accused him of allegedly obtaining large sums of money from several women. The politician claimed that Prakhar had entered into around 25 marriages. The allegations have not been independently established. Tiwari said the revelations caused severe emotional distress to his family. He also said that the incident affected his reputation as a public representative. Following the allegations, Tiwari said he had severed social and personal ties with the accused family and brought his daughter back home. Police said a case had been registered following Tiwari’s complaint at the Reusa police station. Anuj Trivedi and his son Prakhar Trivedi have reportedly been arrested as the investigation continues. Authorities are now investigating the allegations of fraud, the alleged use of multiple identities and the claims involving several marriages.
