Imtiaz Ali celebrates ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’s rare 50-day run

Main Vaapas Aaunga has pulled off something most films rarely manage. The Partition-era love story has slowly grown into one of this year’s standout box office stories. What makes it even more special is that it did so purely on word of mouth.

Helmed by filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, the film brings together Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari, and Vedang Raina. It has now completed a full 50 days in theatres. The film continues to draw audiences well into its eighth week of release.

Trade data from Sacnilk shows the film was made on a budget of nearly Rs 70 crore. Its collections have now touched Rs 99.21 crore worldwide. For a film that opened on a slower note, this steady climb marks a genuine turnaround.

Marking the milestone, the 55-year-old director shared a warm, personal note with fans. His message centered entirely around gratitude for the audience’s support.

“50 days in cinemas!! This is a rare feat for any film,” Ali wrote. He said his first thought upon reaching this milestone was one of thankfulness toward viewers. According to him, it was ordinary moviegoers who connected emotionally with the story and then encouraged friends and family to watch it too. He described this word of mouth as something that happened simply because people liked the film, with no other push behind it.

Imtiaz Ali also spoke about what this success represents for the Hindi film industry at large. He called the audience’s warm response a source of encouragement for filmmakers everywhere. He also noted that this love would continue pushing him to create better, more engaging cinema going forward.

The Rockstar director did not limit his gratitude to his own project. He also congratulated the broader Hindi film industry for the healthy theatre attendance seen throughout the year.

Main Vaapas Aaunga initially opened across 804 screens spanning 59 countries. The film’s reach later grew further, with 15 additional European territories added to its release.

Interestingly, the film also found strong footing in cities not traditionally known as Hindi cinema strongholds, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata.

Given its consistent run and growing numbers, Main Vaapas Aaunga looks set to remain a major talking point in Bollywood for weeks to come.

Pakistan set to field seven batters in first West Indies Test

TRINIDAD: Pakistan is set to adopt a batting-heavy approach for the opening Test against the West Indies, with team management reportedly planning to field seven specialist batters as they finalize the playing XI ahead of the series opener. According to team sources, initial discussions have begun on the lineup, with the management aiming to strengthen the batting order while maintaining a balanced bowling attack for the first Test, which begins on Saturday at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad. The proposed lineup is expected to include Azan Awais, Imam-ul-Haq, Shan Masood, Babar Azam, and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan. All-rounder Salman Ali Agha is also likely to feature, with the team expected to use him as the fifth bowling option while adding depth to the batting unit. Sources further indicated that Aamer Jamal and experienced pacer Mohammad Abbas are expected to retain their places in the side, providing balance with both bat and ball. There is also a strong possibility that left-arm spinner Ali Usman will make his Test debut. One of Khurram Shahzad or Mohammad Ali is expected to complete the pace attack, depending on the final assessment of conditions. Team management has reportedly advised the bowlers to focus on improving their batting contributions, reflecting Pakistan’s intention to maximize runs from the lower order. The final playing XI, however, will depend on players’ fitness and last-minute evaluations before the match. Meanwhile, preparations at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy suggest conditions could favor seam bowlers. According to sources, curators have prepared a pitch with brown grass rather than lush green coverage, a surface expected to provide pace and bounce while remaining suitable for batting as the match progresses. The first Test marks the beginning of Pakistan’s highly anticipated series against the West Indies, with both teams eager to make a strong start. Pakistan will be hoping that its strengthened batting lineup provides the platform for a winning performance in Caribbean conditions.

Three accused in doctor Akash murder case eliminat…

Three suspects arrested in the murder case of young doctor Akash were killed during a police operation in Karachi after an alleged exchange of fire between law enforcement officials and criminal suspects. According to the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), the incident took place in Umar Brohi Goth area of Gulshan-e-Maymar. Police officials said the arrested suspects had provided information about their escaped accomplices, following which a raid was carried out to arrest the remaining members of the group. During the operation, the alleged criminals opened fire on police teams. Officials said a police officer was also injured in the firing. The SIU claimed that the three suspects already arrested in connection with Dr Akash’s murder were killed after being hit by bullets fired by their own accomplices during the clash. The case relates to a robbery incident in Karachi’s Clifton area on July 13. Dr Akash was killed when armed suspects opened fire outside a bank during a cash-snatching attempt. Police said the suspects had targeted people carrying large amounts of cash. During the incident, the criminals allegedly took away Rs25 million from a total amount of Rs50 million withdrawn from the bank. Investigators later found that the suspects arrested in the case were allegedly involved in other criminal activities, including robberies outside banks and attacks on traders in Karachi. The police investigation also revealed the possible involvement of an unidentified woman in the robbery case. Officials said further investigation was being carried out to determine her role and identify other members of the criminal network. Authorities said efforts are continuing to trace the remaining suspects linked to the gang. The police have vowed to take action against individuals involved in organised street crimes and cash robbery incidents across the city.

FBR starts fiscal year strong with rs810 billion t…

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) kicked off the new fiscal year on a positive note by surpassing its July tax collection target, although a shortfall in income tax receipts and the government’s decision to reject a key enforcement proposal highlighted the challenges that lie ahead. According to provisional figures, the FBR collected Rs810 billion in July, exceeding its monthly target by Rs30 billion. The collection also marked a 7% increase compared to Rs757 billion collected during the same month last year. The strong performance was largely driven by robust sales tax collections, which reached Rs358 billion, surpassing the target by Rs53 billion and recording an 18% year-on-year increase. A significant 78% of total sales tax, amounting to Rs275 billion, was collected at the import stage, where tax compliance is generally higher. However, income tax collection remained below expectations. The FBR collected more than Rs300 billion in income tax, falling Rs23 billion short of the target. Analysts attributed the shortfall to advance tax collections made in June to meet last fiscal year’s revised revenue goals, along with reduced withholding tax rates for salaried individuals and property transactions introduced in the latest federal budget. Meanwhile, customs duty collection stood at Rs105 billion, matching the target, while federal excise duty generated Rs48 billion, slightly exceeding expectations. The July performance marks the beginning of a crucial fiscal year in which the government has committed to collecting Rs15.263 trillion in taxes under an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Meeting the annual target is considered essential for securing future IMF loan disbursements and creating fiscal space for development, defence and water resource projects. The FBR also reported encouraging progress in tax compliance, receiving around 227,000 income tax returns during July after updated tax return forms became available. Additionally, the authority issued Rs98 billion in tax refunds, approximately Rs13 billion more than in the same period last year. Despite the positive revenue performance, the federal cabinet declined an FBR proposal to activate restrictions on high-value purchases by individuals with insufficient declared assets. Had the proposal been approved, it would have limited the purchase of luxury vehicles, expensive properties, large stock investments and major cash withdrawals by non-compliant taxpayers. Economic observers say the government’s ability to sustain monthly revenue growth will be closely watched, as consistent tax collection remains critical to maintaining fiscal stability and meeting commitments under Pakistan’s economic reform programme.

Diphtheria claims 13 children in Sindh as suspecte…

Karachi: Health authorities have raised concerns over the increasing number of diphtheria cases in Sindh after 13 children died from the infectious disease at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital in Karachi’s NIPA area this year. The latest figures have intensified public health concerns, coming amid a rise in other infectious diseases across the province. According to hospital data, 30 diphtheria cases have been reported at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital so far in 2026, with 13 children succumbing to the illness. Nationwide surveillance data shows that Pakistan recorded 308 suspected diphtheria cases between January and June this year. Sindh reported 113 suspected cases, the highest among all provinces, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 87 cases, Balochistan with 64, Punjab with 35, Islamabad with seven, and Gilgit-Baltistan with two. Health experts describe diphtheria as a highly contagious bacterial infection that spreads from person to person, particularly among children who are not fully vaccinated. The disease primarily affects the throat and airways and can become life-threatening if left untreated. Early symptoms include swollen glands in the neck, the formation of a thick gray membrane in the throat, high fever, severe sore throat, and difficulty breathing. Doctors warn that these symptoms should not be ignored, as delayed treatment can lead to serious complications or death. Medical experts are urging parents to ensure their children receive routine vaccinations and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of diphtheria appear. They also stress the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment to reduce the risk of severe illness and prevent further spread of the infection. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while encouraging the public to remain vigilant and follow recommended immunization schedules.

Jeana Keough unable to speak as cancer treatment takes heavy toll

Former The Real Housewives of Orange County star Jeana Keough is facing another difficult setback in her battle with tongue cancer, with her family revealing that the 70-year-old is now unable to speak as treatment continues to take a severe physical toll. The update comes just days after Keough’s family announced that she had been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. Her daughter, Kara Keough, has since shared an emotional account of her mother’s condition, describing the pain she is experiencing as “brutal.” Taking to Instagram Stories, Kara explained that radiation treatment has caused intense discomfort in both her mother’s tongue and throat. “The tongue and throat pain, paired with the mucus from radiation on the area, is just brutal,” Kara wrote. She added, “Poor mama has to spit into tissues all day.” According to Kara, Jeana has already undergone two surgeries after doctors discovered that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. Alongside surgery, she has been receiving chemotherapy, radiation therapy and immunotherapy in an effort to treat the disease. However, the aggressive treatment has left the former reality television personality physically exhausted and struggling with everyday activities. Kara revealed that her mother has become “exhausted, struggling to stay awake, and becoming malnourished because the pain in her tongue and throat makes swallowing even the smallest bites or sips incredibly difficult.” The family had hoped to improve Jeana’s nutrition by having a feeding tube (G-tube) inserted after she reportedly went two weeks without eating a proper meal. Those plans, however, have now been postponed after doctors identified additional health complications. According to Kara, physicians discovered both a deep vein thrombosis and an infection in her leg, forcing them to delay the procedure. Explaining the situation, Kara wrote, “The feeding tube can’t be put directly into her stomach until there’s clarity on the infection.” As a result, Jeana’s cancer treatment has temporarily been placed on hold while doctors focus on treating the infection before proceeding with further care. Despite the difficult circumstances, Kara remained hopeful and asked supporters to continue keeping her mother in their thoughts and prayers. She shared the family’s current prayer requests, writing, “Prayer needs: that this infection clears quickly, that she can get the G-tube surgery imminently so that hangry Jeana doesn’t murder someone, and that we can quickly resume treatment so that this torment can be put in the rear view mirror.” The message combined honesty with humour, reflecting the family’s determination to stay optimistic during an extremely challenging period. Jeana first rose to fame as one of the original cast members of The Real Housewives of Orange County, where viewers followed her personal and family life over several seasons. Since news of her diagnosis became public, fans and fellow reality television personalities have flooded social media with messages of encouragement and support. For now, Jeana’s family remains focused on clearing the infection, improving her nutrition and ensuring she is strong enough to resume cancer treatment as soon as doctors determine it is safe to do so.

Sanya Malhotra says desi ‘acts of service’ hurt women

Sanya Malhotra has spoken about breaking old patterns in her own family. She admitted she “forced” her mother to step back from the kitchen and focus on herself instead. According to her, the habit of women expressing love through nonstop service is not healthy. In many South Asian homes, she said, women spend their days caring for others while their own goals get set aside. She brought this up in a recent interview. Her own house followed the same pattern growing up. Women stayed in the kitchen. Men waited around for things to be handed to them. She said she didn’t fully see how much pressure her mother was under until she moved away to Mumbai. One memory stood out for her. Her mother once cried simply because she felt too sick to cook. Sanya told her that food had nothing to do with love. She explained that cooking is just one way people show care, not the only way it can be shown. That moment shifted things at home. Sanya started nudging her parents away from old habits. Her mother now listens when Sanya tells her to skip the kitchen for a day. She said it makes her proud watching her mother take time for herself in the mornings instead of rushing straight to chores. Her father was not left out either. Sanya said she often pushed him to do small things, like getting his own glass of water or making a simple meal. She admitted the change has not fully stuck yet, but she keeps reminding him. She connected all of this to her character in Mrs. In the film, she plays a newlywed whose entire identity gets swallowed by household duties. Sanya said many women tell her the story feels personal to them. That response, she said, leaves her both upset and hopeful, since even a small shift in mindset feels worth it to her. She also called out how sacrifice tends to get romanticised, especially when it comes to mothers. Women, she said, are often expected to give up their own dreams the moment they become parents. Talking about her mother’s past, Sanya revealed she once wanted to become a fashion designer. It took her years to understand her mother had dreams of her own beyond raising a family. As for the criticism Mrs received, Sanya said none of it bothered her. She said she has no interest in defending her views to people who never even watched the film. She last appeared in Netflix’s Toaster and is currently working on Bandar and Sundar Poonam.
