Indian youth protest alleged exam irregularities in Jharkhand

Thousands of students and unemployed young people marched toward the state legislature in India’s eastern Jharkhand state on Monday.

The protesters were demanding action over alleged irregularities in civil services recruitment examinations.

Police used water cannons to disperse the demonstrators as they moved toward the state assembly in the state capital, Ranchi.

The protesters accused authorities of failing to ensure transparency in government recruitment exams. They also raised concerns over alleged question paper leaks.

The demonstrations began on July 25 and have grown in size in recent days.

Thousands of young people had earlier gathered at a stadium in Ranchi as the campaign gained momentum.

The protesters are demanding major changes to the state’s examination system. They have also called for the cancellation of certain examinations and a federal investigation into the alleged irregularities.

On Monday, demonstrators moved toward the legislature despite heavy security arrangements.

Some protesters climbed over police barricades while carrying placards and Indian flags. They chanted slogans and called for action against those responsible for the alleged examination problems.

The protests reflect growing frustration among students and unemployed youth in Jharkhand, one of India’s less economically developed states.

The state government has held talks with representatives of the protesters. Officials have said that many of their demands have already been accepted.

The government has also indicated that it is willing to continue discussions to address the remaining concerns.

The demonstrations in Jharkhand come amid wider anger among Indian youth over alleged corruption in recruitment examinations.

Similar protests were held in New Delhi in recent weeks. Those demonstrations focused on alleged irregularities and paper leaks involving national-level examinations.

The protests eventually contributed to the resignation of India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan last month, following controversy surrounding alleged leaks in a national medical entrance examination.

The growing demonstrations have highlighted concerns over unemployment and limited job opportunities for young people.

Students and job seekers argue that examination irregularities can damage their career prospects after years of preparation.

The protests also reflect broader concerns about transparency in public recruitment and the credibility of competitive examinations.

LHC Judge appointments spark Rawalpindi lawyers’…

Rawalpindi: A dispute has erupted among lawyers’ groups in Rawalpindi over recent appointments and nominations of judges to the Lahore High Court, with some bar organisations raising questions over the representation of Rawalpindi Division and demanding a review of the process. The controversy intensified after the Peoples Lawyers Forum Rawalpindi Division called the proposed nominations unacceptable and demanded that the Judicial Commission examine the reasons behind the selections and the rejection of other candidates. The forum questioned why no candidate from Rawalpindi Division was included in the nominations and demanded details about the criteria used for selecting nominees. Meanwhile, the High Court Bar Association Rawalpindi and District Bar Association Rawalpindi also expressed concern over what they described as the continued lack of representation of Rawalpindi Division in Lahore High Court appointments. The District Bar Association Rawalpindi stated that ignoring the region’s experienced lawyers raised concerns about merit, transparency and regional balance. The association said Rawalpindi Division has a large legal community consisting of seven district bars and fourteen tehsil bars, producing many renowned lawyers, judges and legal professionals who have contributed to Pakistan’s judicial system. According to the association, no member of the Rawalpindi Division bar has been confirmed as a Lahore High Court judge since 2017, despite several capable lawyers and additional judges from the region having served with distinction. The High Court Bar Association Rawalpindi described the continued absence of representation as a matter requiring attention and said consultations would be held with district and tehsil bars to decide future steps. The Peoples Lawyers Forum also called on President Asif Ali Zardari and Peoples Lawyers Forum President Nayyar Hussain Bukhari to take notice of the situation. The forum requested that the notification process should be reviewed and that the Judicial Commission should provide details about the nominated candidates, their qualifications, selection reasons and the reasons why other candidates were not considered. The lawyers’ group demanded that if the process was found inconsistent with rules or principles of fairness, recommendations should be reconsidered and a fresh merit based review should be conducted. However, the dispute remains focused on questions of representation and transparency rather than any confirmed wrongdoing. The final decision regarding judicial appointments rests with the relevant constitutional authorities and judicial forums. The issue has now placed attention on the balance between merit based appointments and regional representation in the higher judiciary. Lawyers’ organisations have called for a transparent mechanism that ensures qualified candidates from all regions receive equal consideration while maintaining the independence and quality of the judicial system.

Cuban president accuses US of attempting to seize island amid economic pressure

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has denounced Washington’s escalating pressure campaign against Cuba as a “genocidal policy”, alleging that the United States is seeking to “appropriate” the nation. Speaking in Pinar del Río during the 73rd anniversary of the Moncada Barracks assault, Díaz-Canel stated that “Cuba is today waging a historic battle … against the walls of a genocidal policy whose objective is to suffocate an entire people in order to appropriate the country”. He further described the US blockade as “a weapon of war” that “causes deaths” and accused Washington of attempting to trigger a “social explosion with the sole aim of installing governments aligned with its imperial interests”. The sharp condemnation comes amid severe energy shortages, rolling blackouts, and financial distress brought on by expanded US sanctions, an oil blockade, and recent restrictions targeting Cuba’s overseas medical missions program. While Washington maintains that Cuba poses a regional security threat, Díaz-Canel called for national unity and the implementation of recent economic reforms, reaffirming that Cuba’s political model remains non-negotiable.

Pezeshkian rejects pressure as Iran seeks path to de-escalation

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Tehran will not surrender to external pressure or compromise its military and defensive capabilities, while stressing that Iran remains open to diplomacy if it can help protect the country’s interests. In a televised interview marking the second anniversary of his presidency, Pezeshkian said Iran would resist any attempt to force it into submission. He maintained that Tehran had the right to preserve its defence capabilities and would not accept demands aimed at weakening its military strength. The Iranian president described his country’s response during the latest conflict with the United States and Israel as an act of self-defence. He praised Iran’s armed forces, including the Army, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Aerospace Forces, for their performance during the fighting. Pezeshkian also accused Washington and Tel Aviv of attempting to bring Gulf countries together against Iran. He said Tehran was working to prevent further regional divisions and maintained that Muslim countries should cooperate regardless of sectarian differences. He rejected claims that Iran sought territorial expansion or intended to attack neighbouring states. According to Pezeshkian, Iran wanted peaceful relations with countries in the region and had no plans to seize territory or expand its borders. The president also questioned why some regional countries allowed their territories to be used for attacks against Iran. He said Tehran did not seek confrontation with those states but would respond against locations from which it was attacked. Meanwhile, senior US military officials are reportedly pushing for a path toward de-escalation as concerns grow over the effectiveness and sustainability of further military action against Iran. According to a report, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen Dan Caine has privately urged senior Trump administration officials to explore options for ending the conflict. The discussions reportedly involved senior figures including CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance. US officials are said to believe that continued air operations alone may not be enough to force Tehran to accept Washington’s demands. There are also concerns about Iranian retaliation against US allies and regional energy infrastructure. The report further indicated that shortages of some US weapons, including air-defence interceptors and precision munitions, could make a prolonged conflict increasingly difficult. Despite the concerns, US officials reportedly believe American forces could still inflict significant damage on Iran if President Donald Trump orders further escalation. At the same time, Washington is examining diplomatic options that could allow Trump to present an agreement as a political achievement. A possible agreement between Iran and Oman could provide a major breakthrough in efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to a US official. Washington expects Tehran and Muscat to reach an understanding that would allow commercial shipping and oil traffic to resume through the strategic waterway. The United States has indicated that it could lift its blockade of Iranian ports once commercial shipping is restored and Iran fulfils its commitments. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes, with a significant share of global oil supplies traditionally passing through it. Disruptions caused by the conflict have contributed to higher energy prices and increased inflationary pressure. The latest diplomatic activity follows several previous claims that a deal over the strait was close, although Iranian officials have repeatedly denied that formal negotiations were taking place. Regional tensions have also prompted Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye to strengthen military cooperation through a joint defence agreement signed in Makkah. Under the agreement, an armed attack against any one of the three countries would be treated as an attack against all three. The countries said the pact was intended to strengthen collective deterrence and protect regional security. Türkiye stressed that the agreement was defensive and was not directed against any particular country. However, the deal comes amid heightened tensions involving Iran and growing concerns about the conflict spreading across the Gulf and wider Middle East. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are continuing on the Lebanon front, where officials are discussing arrangements for monitoring the potential disarmament of Hezbollah under a US-backed framework. Pezeshkian has also defended diplomatic engagement with Washington despite opposition from Iranian hardliners. The Iranian president argued that dialogue could be useful if it allowed Tehran to safeguard its national interests and secure its rights.

TikTok star Cesar Gastelum shot dead during livestream in Mexico

Mexican social media influencer Cesar Gastelum was shot and killed while livestreaming in Culiacan. The city sits in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, a region long troubled by unrest. Gastelum had built a following of nearly 600,000 people on TikTok. He was known mainly for his comedy content and light-hearted videos. At the time of the attack, he was streaming live outside a fast-food restaurant with friends. Footage from the livestream showed two helmeted individuals approaching on a motorcycle. The driver reportedly opened fire directly at Gastelum during the broadcast. The attack unfolded in real time as viewers watched the stream online. A security official in Sinaloa confirmed Gastelum’s death shortly after the incident. Authorities said a major security operation was launched in response. Details about a possible motive have not yet been released publicly. According to Reuters, the killing adds to a pattern of violence in the region. Culiacan, the state capital, has seen ongoing clashes between rival criminal groups. These factions have been fighting for territorial control across the city for some time. Sinaloa has repeatedly made headlines in recent years over organised crime activity. The state is widely associated with one of Mexico’s most powerful drug cartels. Public killings and targeted attacks have periodically disrupted daily life in the region. The incident has drawn comparisons to another high-profile case from last year. In May 2025, Mexican beauty influencer Valeria Marquez was killed in a similar way. She was shot while livestreaming from a salon in Zapopan, Jalisco. Marquez, who was 23 at the time, was killed after a man entered the salon. Prosecutors said he opened fire before fleeing the scene afterward. Her case was later investigated using femicide protocols by local authorities. Both cases have renewed concern over the safety risks facing content creators in Mexico. Livestreaming has increasingly placed influencers in vulnerable, exposed situations during public appearances. Digital rights groups have previously called for stronger protections for online creators. Authorities have not indicated whether the two cases are connected in any way. Investigations into Gastelum’s death remain ongoing as officials gather further information. No arrests have been announced at this time.

Nicholas Hoult joins HBO’s Harry Potter as Gilderoy Lockhart

Nicholas Hoult is stepping into the magical world of Hogwarts, taking on the role of the charming but self-obsessed Professor Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. The casting news was confirmed by HBO Max on Tuesday, August 11, adding another high-profile name to the growing ensemble of the highly anticipated reboot. Hoult will portray the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor in the show’s second season, succeeding Kenneth Branagh, who played the character in the original 2002 film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Gilderoy Lockhart is introduced in the second Harry Potter story as a celebrated wizard who joins Hogwarts as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Known for his confidence, charm and flamboyant personality, Lockhart has gained fame for writing books about his supposed heroic achievements. However, his public image is far more impressive than his actual abilities. Throughout the story, his exaggerated claims and lack of competence become increasingly apparent, making him one of the more memorable and comedic characters in the Harry Potter universe. Hoult’s addition further strengthens the star-studded cast of HBO’s new adaptation. The series features John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy. The young stars leading the new generation of Hogwarts students include Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Their casting has generated significant interest as audiences prepare to see the beloved story retold for television. Production on the series began in July 2025, with the first season scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on December 25. The adaptation is expected to explore J.K. Rowling’s original books in greater detail than the films, allowing more room for characters, storylines and events that were previously condensed or omitted. The Harry Potter franchise, however, continues to face controversy because of Rowling’s public comments about transgender issues. The author has faced criticism since 2020 over remarks that many viewed as transphobic. Rowling has rejected that characterization and has maintained that her views are focused on women’s rights. Despite the controversy surrounding the author, Rowling remains involved with the television adaptation as an executive producer. For Hoult, the Harry Potter role comes after another major franchise appearance. The actor recently portrayed Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman and is expected to return as the iconic villain in the upcoming sequel, Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release in 2027. Hoult is also set to appear in How to Rob a Bank, which is slated for release on November 13, adding another major project to his increasingly busy film and television career.
