Investigation launched after five street dogs poisoned in Cha-am
An investigation has been launched after five street dogs were poisoned in Cha-am, prompting concern among residents and animal welfare groups in the area.
The incident occurred on 24 April in the Nong Hiang community along an irrigation road in Huai Sai Nuea, within Cha-am Municipality. Officials confirmed that five stray dogs were found dead outside a residential property, with evidence indicating they had been poisoned.
Local authorities moved quickly to the scene on 25 April following reports of the deaths. The response involved district officials, livestock officers, police from Cha-am Police Station, and local defence volunteers, who were tasked with establishing the facts and assessing any wider risks to the community.
Initial checks confirmed that the animals had died after consuming poison. Officials subsequently carried out the cremation of the carcasses to prevent the spread of disease. Guidance was also provided to residents on managing stray animals, alongside information about animal protection laws.
Police step up patrols as investigation continues
Officials said further measures are being taken in response to the incident. Livestock officers are preparing to assess the health of dogs still in the area, while police have increased patrols to reassure residents and deter further incidents.
Authorities are also working to identify the person responsible. Early indications suggest the act may have been carried out by someone familiar with the local area, although no arrests have been made.
A resident who reported the incident said there had been around 19 stray dogs in the area. Of those, five have been confirmed dead and four remain alive. Several others are unaccounted for and are feared to have died elsewhere, as they have not returned to their usual feeding spot.
The resident said she and her partner had fed the dogs regularly and that the animals had also acted as a deterrent to potential intruders. She added that the incident had raised concerns about safety, particularly as the household is located near a wooded area and consists of only three people.
Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward as the investigation into the poisoning of street dogs in Cha-am continues.
