Islamabad gets foolproof security for Eid Milad

ISLAMABAD: Authorities in Islamabad have finalised foolproof security arrangements for the peaceful observance of Eid Milad-un-Nabi ﷺ.

Security measures have been strengthened across the federal capital ahead of the religious occasion. Special arrangements have been made to protect citizens and ensure the smooth conduct of religious gatherings and processions.

Law enforcement agencies have been directed to remain alert and closely monitor sensitive areas. Security personnel will be deployed at key locations, while additional measures will be taken around mosques, worship places and routes of Milad processions.

Authorities have also stressed the need for effective coordination among the relevant departments. Police and other security officials will remain vigilant throughout the celebrations.

The arrangements aim to prevent any untoward incident and provide a safe environment for people participating in Eid Milad-un-Nabi ﷺ events.

Officials have urged citizens to cooperate with security personnel and follow the instructions issued by the administration during the celebrations.

The Early Warning Center has forecast partly cloudy, hot, and humid conditions for the next three days. During this period, daytime temperatures are expected to range between 34°C and 36°C, with no immediate indication of widespread rainfall. According to PMD spokesperson and Deputy Director Anjum Nazir, the weather system that triggered recent rain across Karachi has now completely weakened. He noted that it is too early to determine whether a developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal will have any direct impact on Karachi’s weather. Despite the end of the current system, weather experts remain optimistic about the city’s monsoon outlook. They expect Karachi to receive additional rainfall during August as seasonal monsoon activity continues across the region. The timing and intensity of future rain spells will depend on the movement and strength of upcoming weather systems. Karachi typically experiences high humidity during the monsoon season, and changing weather patterns can result in sudden showers even after dry periods. Residents are advised to stay updated with official weather forecasts, especially if they plan to travel or participate in outdoor activities. The latest update offers a brief pause in rainfall while highlighting that the monsoon season is far from over.     CJP unveils nationwide women facilitation centres

    Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi has announced that Women Facilitation Centres will be established in courts across the country to make the justice system more accessible, supportive and efficient for women. The announcement was made during a meeting with representatives of the Sindh High Court Bar Association and the Karachi Bar Association at the Supreme Court’s Karachi Registry. The meeting focused on improving facilities for women litigants and addressing challenges faced by female lawyers in the legal profession. During the discussion, the chief justice said the proposed centres are part of broader judicial reforms aimed at creating a more welcoming and convenient environment for women seeking legal assistance. He stressed that women should have easier access to courts and receive the support needed to pursue their cases without unnecessary difficulties. Justice Yahya Afridi said the Women Facilitation Centres would provide a wide range of services under one roof. In addition to offering legal guidance, the centres would include mediation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) facilities to help settle suitable cases quickly and reduce the burden on courts. He added that the centres would also provide psychological counselling and connect women with relevant government departments and support organisations whenever required. The initiative is intended to ensure that women receive both legal and social assistance throughout the judicial process. The chief justice informed the delegation that the judiciary has already selected the three best designs for the proposed centres. These model designs will be shared with all high courts to ensure a uniform system is introduced across Pakistan. The representatives of women lawyers welcomed the initiative and thanked the chief justice for giving priority to the needs of female litigants. They also highlighted several issues affecting women in the legal profession, including workplace challenges and barriers to equal opportunities within the justice system. Justice Afridi assured the delegation that the concerns raised during the meeting would be addressed on a priority basis. He said the judiciary would work closely with the relevant high courts and other institutions to develop practical solutions and improve facilities for women across the country’s judicial system.

    Johnson & Johnson agrees $5.5bn talc cancer settlement

    NEW YORK: Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay an estimated $5.5 billion to settle tens of thousands of lawsuits alleging that its talc-based baby powder and other products caused ovarian cancer. The proposed settlement covers around 76,000 claims. The cases include lawsuits pending in federal and state courts across the United States. The agreement could bring an end to a legal battle that has continued for about a decade. However, it will only become final if 95 per cent of eligible ovarian cancer claimants accept the deal. Lawyers representing the plaintiffs welcomed the settlement. They described it as a reasonable outcome after years of legal proceedings. Johnson & Johnson has continued to deny that its talc products caused cancer. The company has also rejected claims that its products contained asbestos. The company said it agreed to the settlement to bring the long-running dispute to an end. Its litigation chief maintained that the claims lacked merit. Under the proposed agreement, Johnson & Johnson expects to pay about $3 billion in 2027. Additional payments will follow in 2028. The final cost could be higher. Lawyers involved in the negotiations said the total amount could eventually reach $7 billion or more, depending on the number of claimants who participate. The settlement does not place a fixed ceiling on the company’s total payments. Individual qualifying claims will receive amounts based on specific criteria. The agreement follows several important courtroom victories for Johnson & Johnson. The company has won a number of individual trials. It has also successfully challenged some of the experts used by plaintiffs to support their claims. A federal judge recently raised questions about whether individual plaintiffs could establish that talc specifically caused their ovarian cancer. Johnson & Johnson has maintained for years that its talc products were safe. The company stopped selling talc-based baby powder in the United States in 2020. It replaced the product with a cornstarch-based version. The legal dispute also involved a controversial bankruptcy strategy. In 2021, Johnson & Johnson moved talc liabilities to a subsidiary that sought bankruptcy protection. The strategy, commonly known as the “Texas two-step”, was intended to resolve the lawsuits through bankruptcy proceedings. The attempts ultimately failed after courts dismissed the bankruptcy cases. Before those efforts, Johnson & Johnson had experienced mixed results in talc trials. In one major case, a jury awarded billions of dollars to 22 women who alleged that the company’s baby powder contributed to their ovarian cancer. Other cases ended in victories for the company, while some awards were later reduced on appeal. The new settlement differs from the earlier bankruptcy proposals. It applies only to existing claims. It does not cover potential future lawsuits. The agreement is also expected to provide faster payments to eligible claimants. Lawyers involved in the deal said payments could be completed within about 18 months. The settlement now faces an important approval test. At least 95 per cent of ovarian cancer claimants must agree to the deal before it can become final. If approved, the agreement would significantly reduce one of Johnson & Johnson’s longest-running legal challenges and provide compensation to thousands of people involved in the litigation.

    India’s Independence Day faces protests and boycotts

    NEW DELHI: India’s Independence Day celebrations were met with protests, shutdowns and boycott calls in several regions on Saturday, including Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and parts of the country’s northeast. Several political, community and regional groups called for strikes and non-participation in official celebrations, with some organisations observing the day as a “Black Day”. In IIOJK, boycott and shutdown calls were reported ahead of the celebrations. Security was significantly increased in Srinagar, with additional personnel deployed around key locations and routes leading to the main Independence Day venue. The protests and boycott calls were also reported in several northeastern states, including Assam, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. In Nagaland, Naga nationalist groups observed August 14 as their own Independence Day, recalling the Naga National Council’s declaration of independence in 1947. The groups continue to emphasise their separate political identity and longstanding demand for self-determination. Naga leader Thuingaleng Muivah reiterated that his group would not compromise on its demands concerning sovereignty, a separate flag and constitution. The Naga Students’ Federation also opposed the mandatory singing of Vande Mataram, citing concerns related to religious freedom and freedom of conscience. In Manipur, several organisations called a 12-hour general strike and shutdown. Black flags were reportedly displayed in parts of the state as groups urged people to stay away from official celebrations. Similar boycott calls were issued in Assam and neighbouring areas. Security forces were placed on alert around sensitive locations and border regions amid concerns over possible disruptions. The developments came as India held nationwide celebrations marking its Independence Day, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the main ceremony in New Delhi. Meanwhile, India’s opposition also remained divided over the official celebrations. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi did not attend Modi’s ceremony. Their absence was linked to continuing political differences, including disagreements over seating arrangements and protocol.

    North Korean hackers develop AI tools for cyberattacks

    SEOUL: A North Korean-linked hacking group has reportedly expanded its use of artificial intelligence to strengthen cyberattacks, automate operations and analyse stolen data. The group, identified as Kimsuky, has developed and collected a range of AI-related tools that could help its operators conduct attacks more efficiently, according to a South Korean cybersecurity company. The company said it discovered infrastructure linked to Kimsuky containing several programs designed to run and manage artificial intelligence models locally. These included Ollama, GPT4All and Msty. The hackers also appeared to be using retrieval-augmented generation technology. The system can help AI models search and process large collections of documents. Researchers said the use of locally operated AI models could allow the group to analyse sensitive information without sending data to external AI services. This could give hackers greater control over stolen material and reduce their reliance on third-party platforms. The investigation also uncovered AI agent development frameworks, speech-to-text software and an AI-assisted coding tool called Cursor. According to the cybersecurity firm, the findings indicate that Kimsuky may be moving beyond the simple use of generative AI for creating phishing messages. The group could now be seeking to integrate existing AI models into different stages of its cyber operations. These may include malware development, stolen-data analysis and attack automation. Researchers also identified documents related to finance and cryptocurrency on the infrastructure. Some of the files appeared to have been generated using artificial intelligence. The documents were designed to look like legitimate investment reports and other professional workplace material. Such files could potentially be used as decoys or to make malicious campaigns appear more credible. The findings have not been independently verified. However, cybersecurity researchers and government agencies have repeatedly linked North Korean state-backed groups to international cyber operations. North Korean cyber units have been accused of conducting espionage campaigns, stealing money and targeting cryptocurrency-related assets. Authorities in the United States and South Korea have previously warned about the activities of such groups. Kimsuky has long been associated with cyber-espionage operations targeting governments, organisations and individuals. The group has also been accused of gathering intelligence to support North Korea’s strategic interests. The latest findings point to a growing role for artificial intelligence in cyber operations. Security researchers have warned that AI tools can make phishing campaigns more convincing and help attackers process information and develop malicious software more quickly.
