    PM forms top panel to revive Iran gas pipeline

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formed a high-level committee to find a mutually acceptable solution to the long-delayed Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project, which has remained stuck for more than a decade. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik informed the Senate that the committee is examining the legal, financial and energy implications of the project. It will assess Pakistan’s potential financial exposure in the ongoing arbitration process while also considering the country’s future energy requirements. The minister was responding to a calling-attention notice raised by Senator Talha Mahmood. He said the government was seeking a negotiated solution rather than allowing the dispute to become more complicated through prolonged litigation. Describing Iran as a “brotherly country”, Malik said the leadership of Pakistan and Iran remained in contact and was working towards an amicable settlement. He noted that Iran had already completed substantial infrastructure on its side of the project. Iranian authorities have brought gas from the South Pars field towards a major city close to the Pakistani border. The dispute over the pipeline has reached international arbitration in Paris. Pakistan is therefore assessing the possible financial consequences of the project delays and the legal proceedings before deciding its next course of action. The government is also reviewing whether the pipeline can be made commercially viable. Pakistan has previously asked Iran to cut its gas price by around 50 per cent and reduce the proposed supply volume because several domestic sectors have shown limited interest in purchasing Iranian gas at existing prices. Officials have said that domestic consumers and fertiliser plants are currently receiving gas at significantly lower prices than the cost at which imported gas could be supplied through the project. Power producers have also indicated that purchasing imported gas at prices above Rs2,000 per million British thermal units would not be commercially feasible. The government has therefore been considering a lower price as a potential benchmark for making the pipeline economically sustainable. Pakistan has also indicated that it could move ahead with the project if the United States provides a waiver allowing energy cooperation with Iran despite Washington’s sanctions regime. The Iran-Pakistan pipeline, commonly known as the Peace Pipeline, was originally designed to transport Iranian natural gas to Pakistan and help address the country’s long-term energy needs. Iran completed a substantial portion of the pipeline within its territory. Pakistan, however, did not complete its section by the agreed deadline, leaving the project largely dormant. US sanctions against Iran, difficulties in securing financing and wider geopolitical tensions have complicated Pakistan’s efforts to complete the project. The issue has also resulted in legal disputes between the two countries. Iran initiated international arbitration proceedings in Paris over delays in the implementation of the project. Meanwhile, the petroleum minister told the Senate that the government was separately addressing gas-related problems in Balochistan. He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had instructed him to engage with provincial stakeholders. Another high-level committee, headed by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, is examining gas-related issues in the province, including technical and payment-related matters. The latest move indicates that Islamabad is attempting to balance its obligations under the Iran gas project with its financial constraints, international commitments and changing energy requirements.

    LAHORE (July 25) – Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a robust and competitive ecosystem for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Speaking at “Expo Faisalabad 2026”, being held from July 24 to 26 at the Expo Center, Lahore, he emphasized that the sector remains central to Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s vision for sustainable economic growth, industrial development and export promotion. He said Pakistan has militarily shown its prowess to the world and it’s time to show economic resilience and development. He appreciated the efforts of the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FCCI) for organizing the exhibition. “Faisalabad is the industrial and textile heart of Pakistan and a major contributor to our exports and manufacturing sector. Platforms like Expo Faisalabad create valuable opportunities for entrepreneurs to showcase their products, build business partnerships and explore new markets,” he said. The SAPM said the government has placed special emphasis on improving access to finance, promoting business formalization, enhancing exports and creating an enabling environment where entrepreneurs can innovate, invest and expand their businesses. He appreciated SMEDA’s proactive engagement with the business community and its efforts to connect entrepreneurs with government support programmes through exhibitions and outreach activities across the country. Earlier, CEO SMEDA Nadia Jahangir Seth said the Authority remains committed to supporting entrepreneurs through strategic partnerships and market-driven interventions. “SMEDA believes that exhibitions such as Expo Faisalabad are powerful platforms for connecting entrepreneurs with opportunities, knowledge and government support services. Its participation reflects the commitment to promoting business formalization, improving competitiveness, facilitating market access and strengthening Pakistan’s MSME ecosystem through sustained engagement with the private sector,” she emphasized. SMEDA has established a dedicated helpdesk where entrepreneurs and visitors are being briefed on the flagship initiatives, government support programmes and business development services. The helpdesk is also facilitating free registration of informal enterprises through the SME Registration Portal (SMERP), enabling businesses to formalize their operations and benefit from enhanced opportunities for growth, financing and market access. As part of its capacity-building programme, SMEDA is conducting sessions on “Marketing Strategies for SMEs” and “Improving Product Quality for Export Markets”, equipping entrepreneurs with practical knowledge to improve competitiveness and strengthen their presence in domestic and international markets.     LAHORE: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Punjab has arrested three suspects in coordinated operations across Lahore, Faisalabad, and Multan for allegedly harassing, blackmailing, and targeting women through social media platforms. The operations were carried out under the special directives and supervision of NCCIA Punjab Director Muhammad Ali Waseem as part of an intensified campaign against cyber-enabled crimes involving women. During the raids, investigators seized mobile phones, SIM cards, and other electronic devices containing digital evidence, while further investigations are underway. In Lahore, NCCIA officials arrested Qaiser Bilal in connection with FIR No. 151/2026. Authorities said a mobile phone recovered from the suspect allegedly contained objectionable photographs of the complainant, threatening messages, and evidence of image sharing. Investigators further alleged that the suspect created a private TikTok account under the name “Miss.B” to upload the victim’s photographs and falsely posed as an officer of a sensitive government institution to intimidate and blackmail her. The case is being investigated by Sub-Inspector Umm Salma. In Faisalabad, officials arrested Soban Ahmed under FIR No. 100/2026. According to investigators, the suspect allegedly used social media platforms and WhatsApp to blackmail and threaten the complainant’s sister by exploiting objectionable material. A mobile phone and SIM cards believed to have been used in the offence were recovered during the operation. Sub-Inspector Umar Rehman is leading the investigation. Meanwhile, in Multan, NCCIA arrested Muhammad Imran in connection with FIR No. 123/2026. Authorities alleged that the suspect obtained objectionable images of the complainant and circulated them through multiple WhatsApp accounts while continuously harassing the victim and her family. Investigators recovered a mobile phone, two SIM cards, and the WhatsApp account allegedly used in the crime. A court has granted a four-day physical remand of the suspect to facilitate further investigation, which is being conducted by Sub-Inspector Saeed Ahmed. Director NCCIA Punjab Muhammad Ali Waseem reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting women from online harassment, blackmail, and the misuse of digital platforms. He said the agency would continue taking strict legal action against those involved in cybercrimes targeting women and would use advanced digital forensic techniques to ensure offenders are brought to justice.

    Environmental groups warn Trump-linked Albania resort is harming protected coastline

    Environmental groups and scientists have warned that early work on a luxury resort linked to the Trump family has already caused lasting damage to one of Albania’s most environmentally sensitive coastal areas. They say construction activity has affected wildlife habitats and fragile ecosystems even before the main development has begun. According to satellite images reviewed by AFP, major changes took place over a period of 25 days in May. Workers cleared a new road, removed large areas of forest and built a bridge across the channel connecting the Narta Lagoon to the Adriatic Sea. Conservationists argue that these early activities have already disrupted a protected landscape known for its rich biodiversity. Marine biologist Olsi Nika, who heads the environmental organization EcoAlbania, said heavy machinery operating on the beaches has damaged nesting areas used by endangered loggerhead sea turtles. He also said the construction of access roads through sand dunes and the removal of trees have disturbed important breeding grounds for many bird species. Environmental experts further warned that work on the water channel linking the lagoon to the sea has interfered with the natural flow of water that is essential for maintaining the surrounding wetlands. Scientists describe the impact as severe, warning that the destruction of habitats could have long term consequences for local wildlife. Ferdinand Bego, a professor at the University of Tirana, said much of the damage to the protected area cannot easily be reversed, even though some construction work has been paused following public protests. The project, valued at approximately 4.5 billion euros, was first announced in 2024 by Jared Kushner, the son in law of US President Donald Trump. Plans include the construction of luxury hotels near flamingo habitats and on a nearby uninhabited island. Trump’s daughter Ivanka has previously spoken publicly about the site’s attractive coastline, lagoon and white sand beaches, describing it as an exceptional location for tourism development. Opposition to the project has grown steadily over recent months. Local residents and environmental activists have staged daily demonstrations, with protests becoming more intense after barbed wire fencing was installed to mark the boundaries of the planned resort. Tensions increased further when private security guards confronted demonstrators during one of the protests, leading to continued public rallies against the development. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has defended the investment, describing it as one of the country’s most important tourism projects. His government argues that the development will attract international investment, create jobs and help Albania compete with neighboring coastal destinations such as Montenegro, Greece and Croatia. Officials believe the project could significantly strengthen the country’s tourism industry and economic growth. In June, a team of scientists visited the site to assess the environmental impact of the preparatory work. Their report concluded that turtle nesting sites, bird habitats and coastal sand dunes had already been affected. Researchers warned that continued development without stronger environmental protections could place additional pressure on the area’s unique ecosystem. The campaign against the project has also received international attention. British singer Dua Lipa, whose family has roots in Kosovo, has publicly expressed support for those opposing the development. Environmental campaigners hope that growing international concern will encourage Albanian authorities to strengthen protections for the coastline. The European Union has also raised concerns as Albania continues its efforts to join the bloc by 2030. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos recently said Albania had agreed to reverse changes made to laws governing protected areas and strategic investments. Environmental experts say such reforms will be important if the country wants to meet European environmental standards during its accession process. Professor Friedrich Schiemer of the University of Vienna, who inspected the site in June, stressed that immediate action is needed to limit further damage. He warned that large tourism developments in ecologically sensitive areas could permanently alter the region’s natural environment if stronger safeguards are not introduced before construction continues.
