Expo Faisalabad 2026’ a springboard for MSMEs: SAPM Haroon Akhtar Khan

LAHORE (July 25) – Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a robust and competitive ecosystem for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Speaking at “Expo Faisalabad 2026”, being held from July 24 to 26 at the Expo Center, Lahore, he emphasized that the sector remains central to Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s vision for sustainable economic growth, industrial development and export promotion.

He said Pakistan has militarily shown its prowess to the world and it’s time to show economic resilience and development.

He appreciated the efforts of the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FCCI) for organizing the exhibition.

“Faisalabad is the industrial and textile heart of Pakistan and a major contributor to our exports and manufacturing sector. Platforms like Expo Faisalabad create valuable opportunities for entrepreneurs to showcase their products, build business partnerships and explore new markets,” he said.

The SAPM said the government has placed special emphasis on improving access to finance, promoting business formalization, enhancing exports and creating an enabling environment where entrepreneurs can innovate, invest and expand their businesses.

He appreciated SMEDA’s proactive engagement with the business community and its efforts to connect entrepreneurs with government support programmes through exhibitions and outreach activities across the country.

Earlier, CEO SMEDA Nadia Jahangir Seth said the Authority remains committed to supporting entrepreneurs through strategic partnerships and market-driven interventions.

“SMEDA believes that exhibitions such as Expo Faisalabad are powerful platforms for connecting entrepreneurs with opportunities, knowledge and government support services. Its participation reflects the commitment to promoting business formalization, improving competitiveness, facilitating market access and strengthening Pakistan’s MSME ecosystem through sustained engagement with the private sector,” she emphasized.

SMEDA has established a dedicated helpdesk where entrepreneurs and visitors are being briefed on the flagship initiatives, government support programmes and business development services. The helpdesk is also facilitating free registration of informal enterprises through the SME Registration Portal (SMERP), enabling businesses to formalize their operations and benefit from enhanced opportunities for growth, financing and market access.

As part of its capacity-building programme, SMEDA is conducting sessions on “Marketing Strategies for SMEs” and “Improving Product Quality for Export Markets”, equipping entrepreneurs with practical knowledge to improve competitiveness and strengthen their presence in domestic and international markets.

Expo Faisalabad 2026 has brought together leading manufacturers, exporters, investors, entrepreneurs and business support organizations to showcase Faisalabad’s industrial excellence and create new avenues for trade, investment and business collaboration.

    Govt extends austerity measures to control expenditure

    The federal government has formally extended its existing austerity policy into the ongoing 2026-27 fiscal year as part of a continued effort to manage public spending and restrict non-essential state expenditures. Following an official decision reached by the federal cabinet to maintain spending controls across public sector institutions, the Ministry of Finance issued a detailed notification on Tuesday outlining the continuation of these operational guidelines. Under the reinforced financial regulations, the government has mandated the immediate abolition of all public sector positions across federal departments that have remained vacant for the past three years. Furthermore, the policy maintains a complete, ongoing prohibition on the creation of any new posts, while also extending strict limitations on the procurement of new machinery, official equipment, and public sector vehicles. In addition to procurement restrictions, the federal government has kept in place its ban on state-funded medical treatment abroad for officials, as well as restrictions on non-essential foreign travel funded at the government’s expense. However, the Ministry of Finance specified that certain essential service categories will remain exempt from the purchase ban. These exemptions cover ambulances, specialised mobile medical vehicles, fire-fighting engines, buses and vans intended for educational institutions, waste and garbage collection vehicles, and operational motorcycles.

    ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Bar Association has expressed concern over the reported deterioration in the health of human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband, Hadi Ali Chattha, while they remain in custody. The association has urged the chief justices of the Islamabad High Court and the Supreme Court to take immediate notice of their reported medical condition. IBA Acting President Iram Rashid and Secretary Raja Khawar Dhaniyal conveyed the concerns in a letter addressed to the chief justices of both courts. The bar association said Mazari was facing serious health problems in jail and required regular medical care. It also raised concerns about Chattha’s condition and called for appropriate medical attention for him. The IBA stressed that access to timely and adequate healthcare is a fundamental right of every prisoner. It said authorities responsible for detainees must ensure that inmates receive necessary medical treatment and facilities. The association called for urgent attention to the matter, particularly in view of the reported health concerns of the two detainees. The IBA maintained that a person’s detention should not prevent them from receiving essential medical care. It urged the relevant authorities to take appropriate steps to protect their health and wellbeing.

    OSLO: Norway’s Football Federation has announced that it will call for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to resign, intensifying pressure on the football governing body’s leader ahead of next year’s presidential election.
