Weight loss drugs may raise hair loss risk

A new study suggests that some widely used weight loss medicines may increase the risk of hair loss (alopecia).

These medicines are mainly prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity.

They work by copying natural hormones in the body that help control blood sugar levels and reduce appetite making it easier for some people to lose weight.

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania Health System compared people taking GLP-1 medications with those using other diabetes treatments.

They found that people using GLP-1 drugs appeared to have a higher rate of hair loss.

The study also noted that U.S. health regulators have received many reports of hair loss after the use of semaglutide and tirzepatide.

According to the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) there were 399 reports of hair loss linked to tirzepatide in 2026, compared with 541 reports the previous year.

For semaglutide, 148 reports were received in 2026 while 164 reports were recorded the year before.

Experts say the findings show a possible link between these medicines and hair loss.

However they stress that more medical research is needed to confirm whether the drugs are directly responsible.

  • Woman dies after anti aging injection in New York

    A 27 year old woman in New York has died after receiving an anti aging injection at a private medical clinic raising serious concerns about unlicensed cosmetic treatments. According to foreign media reports the woman became critically ill shortly after the injection. An ambulance was called to take her to the hospital but she died before arriving. Police arrested 55 year old Luis Rojas Cabrera the man who gave the injection.  During questioning he admitted that he did not have a valid New York medical license to practice medicine. Authorities have charged him with practicing medicine without a license and putting another person’s life at risk through reckless actions. The suspect later appeared in a Bronx court. A judge allowed his temporary release but ordered him to surrender his passport until the post mortem report is completed. In court Cabrera said he is a licensed doctor in the Dominican Republic and also holds a medical assistant license in Puerto Rico.  He added that his application for a New York medical license is still under review. He also confirmed that the only license he currently holds in New York is as a cosmetologist not as a licensed physician.

The newly crowned Serbian King Stefan Dušan entered into a pivotal treaty with Tsar Ivan Alexander of Bulgaria. He seems desperate to employ peace after years of regional conflict. The cornerstone of this agreement was the marriage of Dušan to Ivan Alexander’s sister, Princess Helena (Elena). This union was far more than a ceremonial gesture. Helena proved to be an immensely influential empress consort whose royal Bulgarian lineage carried significant political weight. Her marriage to Dušan directly altered his formal imperial standing, allowing him to claim authority not only over the Serbs and Greeks, but over the Bulgarians as well. The couple later gave birth to Stefan Uroš V, an heir who embodied the consolidated royal houses of the region. Yet, the Bulgarian connections within the Serbian royal court ran much deeper than Dušan’s marriage alone. Dušan himself was bound to Bulgaria by blood through his mother, Queen Theodora Smilets. As the daughter of Tsar Smilets, who ruled the Second Bulgarian Empire from 1292 to 1298 AD, Theodora brought rich dynastic heritage into the Nemanjić house. Thus, when Dušan rose to power and eventually established the grand Serbian Empire, he did so as a monarch who was inherently a product of both Serbian and Bulgarian elite lineages. The fresco preserved in Lesnovo illuminates this intertwined destiny. Depicting the imperial family dressed in rich, jewel-encrusted Byzantine-style robes, it reflects an era when diplomatic ties, shared heritage, and strategic royal marriages could unite rival realms under a single, dominant imperial banner. Today, these historical records and vibrant monastery paintings remind us that the borders of the medieval Balkans were constantly reshaped not just on the battlefield, but through the formidable power of dynastic unity.

  • Rabi ul Awwal to begin on August 15

    The moon for Rabi ul Awwal 1448 AH was not sighted in Pakistan. As a result the first day of Rabi ul Awwal will be on Saturday, August 15, while 12 Rabi ul Awwal will fall on Wednesday August 26. The Ministry of Religious Affairs has also issued an official notification. The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee held a meeting in Islamabad on Thursday to look for the new moon. The meeting was chaired by Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad. Meetings of zonal Ruet-e-Hilal committees were also held in different parts of the country. After the meeting Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad announced that no reliable moon sighting was reported from anywhere in Pakistan. Therefore Rabi ul Awwal will begin on August 15. Rabi ul Awwal is the third month of the Islamic calendar and has special importance for Muslims. 12 Rabi ul Awwal is observed as Eid Milad-un-Nabi ﷺ across Pakistan. On this occasion people arrange gatherings Quran recitation, Naat sessions, and Durood-o-Salam. Mosques, homes and streets are also decorated. Religious scholars use the occasion to remind people about the life, character teachings and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They emphasize that the true message of the occasion is to follow his teachings and bring his good example into daily life.
