Low breastfeeding linked to child deaths

Bottle feeding and the use of formula milk are becoming more common in Pakistan while breastfeeding rates remain low.

Health experts have warned that this trend may be putting many young children at greater risk of illness and death. Experts at a media workshop held at the Karachi Press Club said only about one in five newborn babies in Pakistan receives breast milk within the first hour after birth.

According to experts from the Sindh Institute of Child Health and Neonatology around 33,700 child deaths every year in Pakistan are linked to inadequate breastfeeding. Many of these deaths are connected to illnesses such as diarrhea and pneumonia which can often be prevented or treated.

Many babies do not get exclusive Breastfeeding Health experts said only around 48% of babies under six months are exclusively breastfed in Pakistan.

Children who are not breastfed may face a much higher risk of serious infections and other health problems. Experts strongly recommend starting breastfeeding within the first hour after birth and giving babies only breast milk for the first six months unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Families should support new mothers

Experts stressed that breastfeeding should not be seen as the mother’s responsibility alone. Fathers, families doctors hospitals and workplaces all have a role in helping mothers breastfeed successfully.

Providing mothers with proper support time and a comfortable environment can help more babies receive the benefits of breast milk and contribute to a healthier generation.

ATC extends Mushtaq Ahmad’s remand by four d…

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad has extended the physical remand of former Jamaat-e-Islami senator Mushtaq Ahmad and his co-accused, Daniyal, by four more days in connection with a case linked to a protest over the situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The two accused were produced before the court after completing an earlier three-day physical remand. During the hearing, the prosecution sought a 30-day remand, arguing that investigators still needed additional time to recover a vehicle and weapons allegedly connected to the case. According to prosecutors, the investigation remains incomplete because the alleged recoveries have not yet been made. They requested extended custody to continue the inquiry. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court rejected the request for a 30-day remand and instead approved a four-day extension in police custody. The case was registered at Islamabad’s Shalimar Police Station under charges related to a protest concerning recent unrest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Mushtaq Ahmad’s legal team has previously claimed that he was detained after attempting to enter AJK to express solidarity with people affected by recent violence in the region. They alleged he was stopped by security personnel at Azad Pattan Bridge, denied entry into AJK and later taken into custody by Punjab Police while returning to Islamabad. Following his release from the earlier detention, Mushtaq Ahmad announced plans to organise a peaceful gathering in Islamabad to express solidarity with the people of Kashmir. He invited political activists, students, journalists and members of the Kashmiri community to participate in the event. The case comes amid heightened political tensions following recent protests in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, where clashes reportedly resulted in casualties and injuries, drawing criticism from several political parties and human rights groups.

Call for equal relief for DG Khan school tragedy v…

A heartfelt appeal has surfaced on social media, urging Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to announce financial assistance for the families affected by the Little Scholars School tragedy in Dera Ghazi Khan. The appeal seeks compensation for the families of four children who lost their lives and 16 others who suffered injuries when the school roof collapsed on May 7. It calls for a relief package similar to the one recently announced for the victims of the academy roof collapse in Kahna, Lahore. The families of the Little Scholars School victims expressed deep sorrow over the Kahna tragedy and prayed for the departed souls, strength for the bereaved families and a speedy recovery for those injured. According to reports cited in the appeal, the Punjab government announced Rs2 million for each family that lost a loved one in the Kahna incident and Rs500,000 for each injured person. The appeal welcomed the decision but questioned why the Dera Ghazi Khan victims had not received similar financial support. It highlighted that both incidents involved the collapse of educational building roofs and caused the deaths and injuries of schoolchildren. The appeal stressed that negligence and carelessness require serious attention in both cases and that families in Dera Ghazi Khan deserve the same compassion and assistance. The statement also noted that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced relief for the Kahna victims but has yet to announce compensation for the Dera Ghazi Khan families or visit the city to offer condolences. This, it said, has disappointed the victims’ families and local residents. The appeal urged the chief minister to treat all affected families equally and announce financial assistance for the deceased and injured children of the Little Scholars School tragedy. It also called on elected representatives from Dera Ghazi Khan and the district administration to formally approach the Punjab government for a relief package. The appeal concluded that no financial assistance can replace a child’s life, but government support can provide some relief and show solidarity with grieving families.
