The blaze was brought under control within about 30 minutes by firefighters who responded immediately to emergency calls.
Power failure and heavy smoke caused widespread disorientation, leading many patrons to seek refuge in the rear bathrooms, where outward exits were lacking or inaccessible.
Investigators have pointed out significant licensing and zoning concerns. The venue held permits for selling food, alcohol, and providing live musical entertainment (licensed as a restaurant with live music), but reports indicate it lacked a full license to operate as an entertainment venue/pub and was situated outside areas zoned for such establishments.
The building, constructed in 1970, obtained licenses to sell food and provide musical entertainment and operated as an entertainment venue classified as a pub. Officials are examining whether illegal modifications or unauthorized use contributed to the tragedy. A joint investigation team, including police, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), and other agencies, is reviewing business operations, prior inspections (one occurred in April), and compliance.
Authorities have vowed stricter oversight of nightlife and entertainment venues, with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt signaling reviews of entertainment venue laws, zoning rules, and more frequent random safety checks.
Preliminary inspections revealed multiple serious safety lapses:
– Emergency exits were blocked, poorly marked, unlit, or obstructed.
– A rear fire escape route was partially blocked by a candy selling table.
– One emergency exit was marked “Do Not Open (Staff Only),” causing confusion.

– The venue had front twin doors and two rear exits, but functionality was severely compromised.
National Police Chief Pol Gen Kittharath Punpetch stated that police are checking if any exit was locked and said that such actions would constitute recklessness. Many victims appear to have been trapped after the power failed and smoke filled the venue, leading them into toilets instead of viable exits. Forensic teams are examining the electrical system, circuit breakers, sprinklers (if present at all which they did not seem to be), and any structural changes.
The Chatuchak district office ordered the building closed for an initial 30 days for investigation and structural assessment. City engineers are evaluating its integrity.
Early witness accounts align with the partially blocked rear exit involving a candy stall, which obstructed a fire escape route. This detail has emerged as a key point in safety violation probes.
Reports also reference a musician or performer who noticed smoke coming from a circuit breaker near the stage before the power failure and rapid escalation. Some accounts mention individuals, potentially including performers or staff (described in broader narratives as involving a singer or band member), assisting in opening or forcing a back door to aid escape amid the chaos. The candy seller, who survived, attributed this singer to saving her life by kicking out the stuck back door. Full witness statements are still being collected; police have interviewed dozens so far (one update cited 34). These elements are part of the ongoing effort to reconstruct events and assess individual actions during the emergency.
The venue’s owner is among those receiving treatment in an intensive care unit (ICU). The owner reportedly initially escaped but then grabbed a fire extinguisher and went back into the building to try to fight the fire and save others, leading to their injuries. The pub issued a public statement via its Facebook page expressing deep apologies for the tragedy, condolences to victims’ families, support for the injured, and full cooperation with authorities.
The fire has prompted national mourning and renewed scrutiny of fire safety standards in Bangkok’s nightlife scene, echoing past incidents. A dedicated committee has been formed to investigate root causes, recommend improvements, and review regulations. Police continue interviewing witnesses and gathering forensic evidence, with charges to be considered once facts are established.
