Chinese Man Sentenced to 46 Years in Prison After Discovery of Massive Military Grade Weapons Cache in Pattaya

PATTAYA, Thailand

A 31-year-old Chinese national has been sentenced to 46 years in a Thai prison for the illegal possession of military-grade weapons, C4 explosives, an explosive vest, signal-jamming equipment, body armor, grenades, and other prohibited military hardware, the Pattaya Provincial Court ruled on August 4th, 2026.

Mingchen Sun, 31, who holds Chinese, Dominica, and Cambodian passports, pleaded guilty to charges under the Firearms Act, Arms Control Act and Radio Communications Act. The court reduced the sentence by one-third in light of his guilty plea but imposed consecutive terms totaling 44 years and 24 months (equivalent to 46 years), citing the serious threat the offences posed to public safety and national security. Note: Under Thai law, however, the maximum time he can likely actually serve is 20 years. All seized items were confiscated.

The case originated on the evening of May 8th, 2026, when officers from Na Jomtien Police Station responded to a sedan that had overturned in Banglamung district. Sun was the driver; a Taiwanese woman accompanying him was initially held but later not linked to the weapons and released. A handgun discovered in the vehicle caused a search of his rented house in the Maple Housing Estate in tambon Huai Yai.

There, police uncovered a large arsenal that included M4 and M16 assault rifles, a Glock 9mm pistol, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and magazines, nearly 5 kilograms of C4 plastic explosive (some configured in body-armour vests with remote detonators resembling explosive vests), Russian-made POMZ-2 anti-personnel mines, various hand grenades (including Korean and other types), detonators, body armour, gas masks, gasoline cans, radio signal jammers and communication devices. Some items bore markings linked to Thai military production.

Sun initially claimed he was a depressed firearms enthusiast planning a complex suicide, a statement police rejected. Investigations later linked him to Cambodian-based scam networks and possible internal criminal conflicts rather than planned attacks inside Thailand. Thai media reported he had entered the country legally on a long-term privilege visa, held a non-Thai national ID card, and lived relatively unnoticed for about two years while renting the property for 38,000 baht per month. Immigration authorities revoked his visa following the arrest.

A second unidentified defendant linked to the procurement of the weapons has denied the charges although remains in custody. As this individual is fighting the case their trial is likely to take significantly longer to carry to a verdict. The judgment for Mingchen Sun, meanwhile, came less than three months after the arrest, showing coordinated work by police, prosecutors and the judiciary.

The case drew big attention from Thai security agencies due to the scale of the cache and its potential links to transnational crime. Expanded probes led to additional arrests and asset freezes connected to broader networks.

Free entry announced for national champions cup in…

MULTAN: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced free entry for cricket fans attending the upcoming National Champions Cup, which is scheduled to take place from 11 to 18 August at the Multan Cricket Stadium. The PCB confirmed the decision through an official promotional flyer shared on its social media platforms. The move is expected to encourage cricket supporters to attend the matches and watch some of the country’s leading domestic players in action. The tournament will feature seven matches all of which will be played under day-night conditions. According to the schedule, the matches are expected to begin at around 3 pm local time. The National Champions Cup is a new 50-over List-A domestic competition and will also officially mark the beginning of Pakistan’s 2026-27 domestic cricket season. Four teams will participate in the tournament: Pakistan Greens, Pakistan Whites, Pakistan Blues and Pakistan Gold. The competition will follow a single-league round-robin format meaning each team will compete against the other participating sides during the league stage. At the conclusion of the league matches, the two teams with the highest points will qualify for the final, where they will compete for the tournament title. The PCB has also finalised the playing XIs for all four teams. In addition, a 13-player reserve pool has been selected for the competition. The reserve players will remain with their respective teams during training sessions and match days. According to the PCB’s arrangements, reserve players can be included in the playing XI if a team faces an injury or concussion-related replacement requirement after announcing its original XI. This arrangement is intended to ensure that teams have adequate cover throughout the competition. The tournament will feature several prominent Pakistan players as captains. Shaheen Shah Afridi will lead Pakistan Gold, while Shadab Khan has been appointed captain of Pakistan Greens. Saim Ayub will captain Pakistan Whites, whereas Sahibzada Farhan will lead Pakistan Blues. The Champions Cup is particularly important as the PCB continues its preparations for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The board has selected a wider pool of 44 players along with reserve players, to provide opportunities for cricketers to demonstrate their abilities and strengthen their claims for future national selection. The domestic competition will therefore serve as an important platform for players seeking to establish themselves at the national level. Performances during the tournament could help the selectors assess the form, fitness and consistency of players ahead of future international assignments. With free admission, a strong line-up of players and the opening of the new domestic season, the National Champions Cup is expected to attract considerable interest from cricket fans in Multan and across Pakistan. The tournament will provide supporters with an opportunity to watch emerging and established players compete in a competitive 50-over format while the PCB continues its broader preparations for the next World Cup cycle.

PML-N targets 2/3 majority in AJK as final electio…

MUZAFFARABAD: With the final phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) general elections just days away, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has stepped up its campaign in Rawalakot Division, expressing confidence that it can secure a two-thirds majority in the 45-member Legislative Assembly. The party held a major election rally in Haveli on Friday as campaigning intensified ahead of the August 10 polling in Bagh and Haveli. The final phase will conclude the three-stage electoral process and determine the composition of the next AJK government. Addressing supporters, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah claimed that the results of the first two phases reflected strong public support for the PML-N. He said the party expected voters in Haveli and the three constituencies of Bagh to further strengthen its position and help it achieve the numbers required for a two-thirds majority. Sanaullah pledged that a PML-N-led government would implement its election promises and accelerate development projects in collaboration with the federal government. Referring to commitments made by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during the campaign, he said development initiatives similar to those undertaken in Punjab would be introduced in AJK. He also said PML-N President Nawaz Sharif would personally monitor major development projects in the region. Rejecting opposition allegations of electoral manipulation, Sanaullah described the first two phases as peaceful and transparent, dismissing claims of rigging as unfounded. Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam also addressed the rally, assuring voters that a future PML-N government would focus on public welfare, infrastructure and improved services. He said road connectivity and other development projects in areas close to the Line of Control would be given special priority, with the government seeking to improve infrastructure and public facilities across the region. The August 10 vote in Bagh and Haveli is expected to play a crucial role in determining whether the PML-N can translate its campaign momentum into a two-thirds majority and take the lead in forming the next AJK government.

Pakistan stock exchange slides over 1,100 points

KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) experienced a volatile trading session on Tuesday as strong gains recorded in early trading quickly disappeared, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index ending the day more than 1,100 points lower. Widespread profit-taking in major sectors, combined with cautious investor sentiment influenced by global market uncertainty, weighed heavily on the market. The benchmark KSE-100 Index initially climbed to an intraday high of 178,768.83 points, reflecting optimism among investors during the opening hours. However, the momentum proved short-lived as selling pressure gradually intensified across the market. By the close of trading, the index had fallen to 177,083.22 points, registering a decline of 1,116.80 points, or 0.63%, after touching an intraday low of 177,043.10 points. Market participants attributed the sharp reversal to extensive profit-booking in several heavyweight sectors. Commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies, cement manufacturers, investment firms, and fertiliser stocks all came under significant selling pressure, dragging the benchmark index into negative territory despite its promising start. Investor confidence also remained subdued due to mixed developments in international financial markets. Asian stock markets traded without a clear direction as investors balanced encouraging corporate earnings from the United States against continuing geopolitical tensions. At the same time, international oil prices climbed by more than two percent as uncertainty surrounding diplomatic efforts to ease tensions between the United States and Iran persisted. Concerns over potential disruptions to global oil supplies through major shipping routes also contributed to market caution. Commenting on the day’s performance, Ahmed Sheraz, an equity trader at KTrade Securities, said the KSE-100 Index remained under pressure throughout the session because the market lacked fresh positive catalysts capable of sustaining its recent upward momentum. According to him, the absence of encouraging economic or corporate developments prompted investors to lock in profits after recent gains. Sheraz noted that selling activity was widespread across key sectors, particularly banking, oil and gas, cement, investment companies, and fertilisers. He added that despite Brent crude oil trading between $84 and $86 per barrel, investors largely preferred to stay on the sidelines while waiting for stronger economic indicators and corporate earnings announcements before making new investment decisions. Looking ahead, Sheraz believes the stock market is likely to remain highly sensitive to news flow. Upcoming corporate earnings reports, macroeconomic indicators, and foreign investment activity are expected to play a decisive role in shaping market sentiment over the coming weeks. He also identified the 176,500 to 177,000-point range as an important technical support level for the benchmark index, suggesting that maintaining this level could help stabilise the market. Trading activity slowed compared with the previous session. Total market volume declined to 711.2 million shares, down from 785.3 million shares recorded on Monday. Meanwhile, the total value of traded shares stood at Rs25.8 billion. A total of 495 companiesparticipated in trading during the session. Among them, 161 stocks closed higher, 295 stocks ended in negative territory, while 39 stocks remained unchanged. Pakistan International Bulk Terminal emerged as the session’s most actively traded stock, with approximately 89.8 million shares changing hands. The company’s share price declined by Rs0.34, closing the session at Rs16.74.

PTI announces September 27 to Islamabad over key d…

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced plans to march to Islamabad on September 27 if its demands regarding party founder Imran Khan are not met, with senior party leaders calling for legal and constitutional relief. The announcement was made during a public gathering near the motorway in Peshawar, where PTI leaders said the planned demonstration would go ahead unless progress is made on several issues, including regular meetings with Imran Khan, access to his personal physician, and timely hearings of court cases involving the former prime minister. Addressing supporters, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur said the party had pursued every available constitutional and legal avenue but had failed to achieve the desired outcomes. He argued that the party had little confidence in the judicial process and claimed that recent constitutional amendments had affected the functioning of the courts. Gandapur also alleged that PTI supporters had faced excessive force during previous demonstrations. He questioned the continued detention of Imran Khan and reiterated the party’s position that the former premier’s removal from office was the result of external interference. He further claimed that Pakistan’s economy had performed better during Imran Khan’s tenure and criticized the current government’s handling of economic and security challenges. The chief minister also expressed concern over inflation, unemployment, law and order, and the country’s overall economic situation. He accused the federal government of mismanagement and urged supporters to remain united ahead of the planned protest. Speaking at the same event, PTI leader Sohail Afridi said the party had exhausted all legal and constitutional options before deciding to launch another protest movement. He maintained that the planned march was intended to demand justice rather than political concessions. Afridi announced that PTI would proceed towards Islamabad on September 27 if its demands remained unaddressed. He told supporters that the party was seeking what it described as judicial justice and the restoration of legal rights for its leader. The planned demonstration is expected to become one of PTI’s major political mobilization efforts in the coming months. Party leaders have called on supporters from across the country to participate peacefully in the protest. The federal government has not yet issued a detailed response to PTI’s latest announcement. Political observers say the coming weeks will be important as both sides weigh their next steps amid Pakistan’s evolving political landscape.

Islamic World can unite like NATO, says Hafiz Tahi…

Chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council, Hafiz Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi, has said that the Muslim world has the potential to unite and cooperate in a manner similar to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Hafiz Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi emphasized the importance of unity and collective efforts among Muslim countries. He said that the Islamic world could work together more effectively if countries focused on common interests and strengthened cooperation among themselves. Ashrafi said that religious scholars have an important role to play in safeguarding Pakistan and promoting peace, stability and unity within society. According to him, the role of the ulema is particularly important at a time when the country faces various social, political and security challenges. He stressed that religious scholars should contribute to strengthening harmony among people and discouraging divisions based on sectarian, political or social differences. He said that unity and consensus were essential for the stability and progress of Pakistan. The Pakistan Ulema Council chairman also spoke about the registration of religious seminaries across the country. He said that around 22,000 seminaries had already completed their registration. He described the development as an important step toward bringing religious institutions into a more organized framework. Ashrafi maintained that cooperation between the government, religious scholars and religious institutions could help address several challenges facing the country. He said that seminaries and their scholars could play a constructive role in promoting education, social responsibility and national cohesion. Referring to the wider Muslim world, Ashrafi suggested that Islamic countries could establish stronger mechanisms for collective cooperation. He pointed to NATO as an example of countries working together for shared security and strategic interests. In his view, Muslim-majority countries also have the potential to develop stronger cooperation if they demonstrate unity and mutual understanding. He said that the Muslim world possesses significant human, economic and strategic resources, but greater coordination is needed to make these strengths more effective. Cooperation among Muslim countries, he added, could help them address common challenges and protect their collective interests. Ashrafi further emphasized that Pakistan’s stability depends not only on government institutions but also on the positive contribution of religious scholars and other segments of society. He called on the ulema to continue playing their role in promoting peace, tolerance and national unity. He reiterated that the Pakistan Ulema Council believes in unity and consensus rather than division. According to him, differences of opinion can exist, but they should not become a source of conflict or weaken the country. The remarks come amid continuing discussions about the role of religious institutions and scholars in Pakistan’s social and national affairs. The registration of seminaries has remained an important issue, particularly in relation to regulation, documentation and the integration of religious education with broader national objectives. Ashrafi’s comments also highlight the importance of cooperation among Muslim countries at a time when the Islamic world faces a range of political, economic and security challenges. He argued that greater unity could provide Muslim countries with a stronger collective voice in international affairs. Concluding his remarks, Hafiz Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi reaffirmed his belief in unity, cooperation and consensus. He said that religious scholars, educational institutions and ordinary citizens all have a role to play in strengthening Pakistan and promoting harmony across society.
