Jeff Bezos throws weight behind $2.6B AI startup fixing the chip material crunch

Jeff Bezos has placed his bet on CuspAI, an artificial intelligence startup working to discover and design advanced materials for the next generation of computer chips. The investment aims squarely at the material shortage behind the ongoing chip crisis that has rattled the tech industry over the past several months.

This is not  CuspAI’s first big funding win. Back in July, the company closed a $450 million Series B round, pushing its valuation to $2.6 billion. That round pulled in heavyweight backers, including Bezos Expeditions, AMD Ventures, Nvidia, and Meta.

CuspAI was founded in 2024 with a much narrower focus. Originally, the company built AI tools to identify and test materials for water purification and carbon capture projects. Since then, its mission has grown considerably. By expanding into AI infrastructure and chip materials, the startup now positions itself as a possible fix during a period of serious supply chain strain.

One of CuspAI’s key advantages lies in finding substitutes. The company’s AI can search for alternative materials that mimic the properties of scarce elements like tantalum, gallium, and iridium. These elements are becoming harder to source as demand climbs, particularly with the explosion of AI infrastructure worldwide. The International Energy Agency has already flagged concerns that data centre demand for gallium could outpace supply within the next few years.

Adding to the pressure, rising geopolitical tension between the US and China over rare earth minerals continues to complicate global supply chains. Analysts have pointed to this rift as a growing risk factor for tech manufacturers everywhere.

Beyond securing fresh funding, CuspAI has also launched something bigger: the AI Materials Foundry. This initiative brings together more than 45 major industry players under one coalition, including tech giants like Nvidia, Samsung, Meta, and Hyundai Motor Group. The goal is to pool resources and expertise as the industry races to solve its materials bottleneck.

With Bezos now backing the effort directly, CuspAI’s profile in the AI and semiconductor space is only expected to grow. As chip shortages continue to challenge manufacturers worldwide, the company’s approach of using AI to hunt for alternative materials could prove critical in keeping production on track.

The situation was particularly serious in the western parts of Colombia. The governor of Choco province reported injuries and significant damage to buildings in Quibdo, the provincial capital. Cali, one of Colombia’s largest cities, also suffered substantial damage. Mayor Alejandro Eder said at least 20 buildings had collapsed and that people were believed to be trapped inside some of the structures. Rescue operations were launched in the affected areas. Cali authorities requested additional emergency teams from Bogota and Medellin to assist with search and rescue efforts. Images broadcast by local media showed buildings with damaged facades and sections of structures affected by the powerful tremors. Emergency authorities continued to assess the extent of the destruction as rescue teams searched damaged buildings for survivors. Officials have not yet released a complete account of casualties or property losses. The number of injured people is expected to change as assessments continue. The depth and strength of the earthquake allowed tremors to be felt across a wide area, including outside Colombia. Authorities urged residents to remain cautious and follow instructions from emergency services, particularly in buildings that may have suffered structural damage. The earthquake comes as parts of northern South America remain vulnerable to major seismic activity. In June, two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela, with reported magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, causing widespread destruction and thousands of deaths.

    Two officials martyred in Kohat terror attack

    Two government officials were martyred and another was seriously injured after terrorists attacked a government vehicle at a joint security check post near the Kohat Toll Plaza on the Indus Highway late Thursday night, officials said. According to police, unidentified armed men opened fire on a customs enforcement vehicle that was carrying out routine anti-smuggling duties at the joint check post. The intense firing caused the vehicle to catch fire, resulting in heavy damage. The officials martyred in the attack were identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sajjad-ul-Islam of the Kohat Excise Office and Customs Enforcement Constable Jawad Ahmed of the Peshawar Collectorate. Both officers lost their lives while performing their official duties. Another Customs official, Basirullah, suffered serious injuries during the attack. Rescue teams reached the scene shortly after receiving an emergency call, provided first aid and shifted the injured official to the District Headquarters Hospital in Kohat for further treatment. Rescue personnel also recovered the body of the customs constable from the burnt government vehicle, while firefighters extinguished the blaze to prevent it from spreading further. Soon after the incident, police and security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to trace the attackers. Authorities have started an investigation to determine how the attack was carried out and identify those responsible. Officials said the attack created panic in the area, prompting additional security measures along the highway and surrounding locations. Funeral prayers for ASI Sajjad-ul-Islam were offered near his residence in Kohat. Senior officials from the Excise Department, law enforcement agencies and other government institutions attended the funeral and paid tribute to his services. The Excise Department described him as a dedicated and professional officer who served the department with commitment and courage. Officials expressed solidarity with his family and prayed for the elevation of his rank. Funeral prayers for Customs Constable Jawad Ahmed were also offered at the Custom House in Peshawar. Customs officials, colleagues and family members attended the funeral to pay their final respects. The Customs Department expressed deep sorrow over the loss of its officer, stating that he embraced martyrdom while carrying out his national duty. The department honoured his sacrifice and extended condolences to his family. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the terrorist attack and expressed deep grief over the martyrdom of the two officials. He offered condolences to their families, prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured officer and directed the relevant authorities to arrest those behind the attack. The prime minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eliminating terrorism, saying operations against militant groups would continue until peace and stability are fully restored across the country.

With this increase, Pakistan’s total foreign exchange reserves reached 22.47 billion US dollars. Although the weekly rise was relatively small, it is considered a positive development, as foreign exchange reserves play a vital role in maintaining economic stability, supporting international trade, and strengthening investor confidence. Higher reserves enable the country to meet its external debt obligations, finance imports, and manage fluctuations in the value of the Pakistani rupee. The SBP reported that its own foreign exchange reserves rose by 13.1 million US dollars taking the central bank’s holdings to 17.04 billion US dollars by the end of the reporting week. The increase indicates a gradual strengthening of the country’s official reserve position. Central bank reserves are particularly important because they are used to stabilize the foreign exchange market, ensure adequate liquidity for international transactions, and provide a financial cushion during periods of economic uncertainty. In addition to the improvement in the SBP’s reserves, the foreign exchange reserves held by Pakistan’s commercial banks also recorded an increase. According to the data, commercial banks’ reserves rose by 19.4 million US dollars bringing their total holdings to 5.43 billion US dollars. These reserves consist of foreign currency deposits and other external assets maintained by commercial banks to facilitate international trade, foreign currency transactions, and customer requirements. The combined increase in the reserves of both the State Bank and commercial banks contributed to the overall rise in the country’s foreign exchange holdings. While the increase may appear modest in comparison to the total volume of reserves, it demonstrates stability in Pakistan’s external financial sector during the reporting period. Foreign exchange reserves are closely monitored by investors, international financial institutions, and credit rating agencies because they provide an indication of a country’s ability to meet its international financial commitments. A healthy reserve position also supports economic confidence by reducing pressure on the exchange rate and helping the government manage external payment obligations more effectively. Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves have experienced fluctuations over the past few years due to factors such as external debt repayments, import payments, remittance inflows, export earnings, and financial assistance from international partners. As a result, weekly changes in reserves are often influenced by routine external transactions, repayments, and foreign currency inflows. The latest increase in reserves suggests that Pakistan’s external account remained relatively stable during the final week of July. Economists note that sustaining and further improving reserve levels will depend on continued growth in exports, higher workers’ remittances, prudent fiscal and monetary policies, and the successful implementation of economic reforms. Maintaining adequate foreign exchange reserves remains essential for supporting macroeconomic stability, strengthening investor confidence, and ensuring the country’s ability to meet its international financial obligations in the months ahead.

    Iran vows to resist new US sanctions as China rejects pressure

    TEHRAN: Iran has vowed to strengthen its economy and find ways to withstand what it calls unjustified US sanctions, as Washington prepares to announce a new package of economic measures against Tehran. The comments came a day after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans for what he described as the toughest sanctions ever imposed on Iran. Bessent said further details of the measures would be released on Monday. He suggested that maximum economic pressure could reduce the need for another major military operation against Iran. US President Donald Trump has also warned countries and businesses against providing financial or economic support to Tehran. Trump described the planned campaign as an unprecedented effort of economic warfare and isolation. Data from energy analytics firm Kpler indicated that China accounted for more than 80% of Iran’s shipped oil purchases in 2025. The issue could further complicate US-China relations. Washington has warned against economic cooperation with Tehran, while China has repeatedly criticised unilateral sanctions. Bessent said the United States was seeking cooperation from its allies and other countries. He argued that China had a strong interest in maintaining stability in the Gulf because a significant portion of its energy supplies comes from the region. The latest sanctions threat comes as the wider Middle East conflict continues to disrupt energy markets and regional trade. Oil prices rose after Trump announced plans for stronger economic measures against Iran. The conflict has affected oil supplies and raised concerns about shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway handles a significant share of global oil trade and has become a major point of tension during the conflict. The United States and Iran have announced ceasefire agreements on two occasions in recent months, but both arrangements have broken down.     FPSC clarifies reports on CSS candidate decline

    The Federal Public Service Commission has formally rejected claims of a 45 per cent decline in the number of candidates taking the Central Superior Services examinations, describing such media reports as factually incorrect and misleading. In an official statement, the commission explained that recent news reports suggesting a sharp drop in youth interest were based on data that had been incorrectly compared and interpreted without proper context, leading to a distorted view of actual participation. To clarify candidate statistics, the commission released official figures regarding the 2025 examination cycle. A total of 64,081 candidates registered for the 2025 Mandatory Preliminary Test screening, an annual preliminary process that the commission noted was completely overlooked in the media’s calculations. For the subsequent 2025 written examination, 18,139 candidates applied and 12,792 ultimately sat for the papers. From these, 354 candidates passed the written phase, 342 were declared eligible following interviews, and 170 candidates received final service allocations across various civil service branches. The commission also pointed out that media analyses had omitted results from the Special CSS 2023 examinations, which allocated 141 candidates to civil service posts. This special iteration was specifically designed to benefit women, minorities, and candidates from underdeveloped regions, further reinforcing the examination as a viable career path for Pakistani youth. Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accurate data verification, the commission urged analysts and media outlets to verify details before drawing conclusions, maintaining that the civil service remains a top priority and aspiration for the country’s youth.
