Punjab health survey data sparks security concerns

By Kashif Malik LAHORE – A potential threat to national integrity has surfaced under the guise of a health census, sounding alarm bells in the corridors of power and security agencies. According to sources, the Department of Health and Population, in collaboration with the World Bank, has allegedly granted global organizations access to the complete data of Punjab’s 125.8 million population and sensitive institutions under the multi-billion rupee ‘Community Outreach Initiative (COI)’ program. Sources revealed that Secretary Health and Population Nadia Saqib facilitated the inclusion of this sensitive information into the app, bypassing standard security protocols. For this mega digital drive, 60,000 Community Health Inspectors (CHIs) have been equipped with modern digital tablets for fieldwork. Across the province, these inspectors are not only gathering detailed personal data—including names of heads of households, employment, professions, vehicles, agricultural landholdings, and individual family member details—but are also generating and uploading online ‘Polygon’ locations through satellite mapping. This system will effectively provide the World Bank with unhindered access down to every street and building across the province. Sources disclosed that alongside the general populace, sensitive institutions and military cantonments have also been marked in this digital drive, posing a profound and critical security risk to national defense and integrity. The biggest revelation to surface is that the inclusion of polygon locations via geo-tagging was carried out at the behest of an international NGO. Furthermore, the software responsible for collecting this highly sensitive national data of over 120 million citizens was handed over to a third-party private vendor rather than a government entity, with the vendor’s identity and contract details being kept strictly confidential. According to security and defense experts, granting any foreign entity, NGO, or private vendor access to the detailed profiling of over 120 million individuals, along with satellite and polygon mapping of the country’s defense and sensitive installations, is tantamount to compromising national sovereignty. Following these sensational revelations, deep concern has spread through security circles, prompting urgent demands for an immediate security audit of the project.

Belgium’s largest wildfire in decades double…

A wildfire officials describe as the largest in Belgium’s recent history more than doubled in size within 24 hours, local authorities said Sunday, as hundreds of firefighters entered a third day battling flames tearing through the country’s largest nature reserve. The blaze has forced the evacuation of two villages near Hautes Fagnes, a protected reserve close to Belgium’s eastern border with Germany. Local farmers have hauled water tankers toward the park to assist firefighting crews, while water bombing aircraft and helicopters sent from Sweden and the Netherlands have joined the effort from the air. The Belgian fire is one of several burning across Europe this weekend. At least two people died in forest fires on a Greek island off the coast of Athens on Sunday, part of a broader pattern of blazes spreading across the continent. Belgian officials said intense heat combined with the reserve’s difficult terrain, a mix of bog like wetlands, moorland and forest, has made the fire especially hard to contain. According to figures reported by a French news agency citing local officials, the fire grew from 80 hectares, or about 200 acres, on Friday to 850 hectares by Saturday morning, before expanding further to 3,000 hectares by early Sunday. Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin said two fronts of the fire, one advancing toward Jalhay and the other toward Monschau, have now been brought under control. Authorities said conditions remain difficult overall and that they continue to rely heavily on aerial support to bring the fire under control, though no homes have been damaged so far. Two water bombing aircraft arrived from Sweden on Sunday afternoon to reinforce four helicopters, two Belgian and two Dutch, already working the fire. Nicolas Yernaux, a spokesman for regional authorities in Wallonia, said Saturday that the blaze ranks as the largest the country has seen in recent history. He said firefighters have allowed portions of the heathland to burn because those areas are extremely difficult to reach. Rescue teams have been unable to access the location where the fire started, leaving its cause unknown for now. Additional forest fires have broken out in Croatia, Spain and Serbia since Friday, following a summer of extreme heat that has left large parts of Europe either burning or scorched brown. In southwestern France, local officials in the Landes region said a separate wildfire forced the evacuation of 650 residents on Saturday. That fire first broke out Thursday and reignited Saturday, prompting authorities to deploy more than 500 firefighters to bring it under control. The EU’s climate monitoring service, Copernicus, has confirmed that western Europe just experienced its hottest June to July period on record, a finding that aligns with the wave of wildfires now spreading across multiple countries on the continent.

Addressing one of the world’s leading strategic think tanks, Admiral Ashraf outlined Pakistan’s perspective on the evolving security landscape in the Indian Ocean, stressing the importance of regional maritime stability, freedom of navigation and enhanced international cooperation to tackle emerging maritime security challenges. The address marked a significant milestone in Pakistan Navy’s engagement with the global strategic community and underscored its expanding role in international maritime security discourse. During his visit, organised in coordination with the Pakistan High Commission in London, Admiral Ashraf held a series of high-level meetings with senior officials of the Royal Navy, the UK Ministry of Defence, NATO Allied Maritime Command, and the Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS). Pakistan seeks $1.3 billion Chinese loan refinancing to strengthen forex reserves

Pakistan has formally approached China to refinance a $1.3 billion commercial loan, as the government continues efforts to strengthen the country’s foreign exchange reserves and meet its external financing obligations. According to officials familiar with the matter, negotiations between Pakistani and Chinese authorities are currently in progress to finalise the terms and conditions of the refinancing arrangement. Once the discussions are completed, the funds are expected to be disbursed later this month. The anticipated inflow is expected to provide much-needed support to Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves, which remain under pressure due to significant external debt repayments and ongoing financing requirements. The refinancing would also help ease short-term liquidity pressures while supporting the country’s broader macroeconomic stability. Sources revealed that Pakistan repaid approximately $2.2 billion in external debt during July, including the settlement of the $1.3 billion Chinese commercial loan. The government’s request for refinancing is aimed at replacing the repaid amount, ensuring that reserve levels remain stable without placing additional strain on the country’s external account. The move comes as Islamabad continues to pursue a strategy of securing rollover agreements and refinancing facilities from friendly countries and international partners to meet its debt servicing commitments. Maintaining adequate foreign exchange reserves has remained a key priority for economic managers as Pakistan seeks to strengthen investor confidence and sustain financial stability. Economic experts believe that successful refinancing of the Chinese loan would provide temporary relief to the country’s external financing position while allowing policymakers greater flexibility in managing upcoming debt obligations. Officials said talks with Chinese financial institutions are progressing positively, although the final timeline will depend on the completion of documentation and agreement on financing terms. The refinancing request also reflects Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to manage its external debt profile prudently amid global economic uncertainties and higher financing costs in international markets.
