Lionel Messi breaks Leagues Cup record with stunning brace

MIAMI: Lionel Messi once again proved why he remains one of football’s greatest stars, delivering a brilliant two-goal performance to guide Inter Miami to a thrilling 4-2 victory over Atletico San Luis in their opening Leagues Cup 2026 group-stage match on Wednesday.

The Argentine captain etched his name into the tournament’s history by becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in the Leagues Cup. His latest brace took his tally to 14 goals, surpassing every player to have featured in the competition between Major League Soccer (MLS) and Mexico’s Liga MX clubs.

Inter Miami’s evening did not begin as planned. Atletico San Luis stunned the home crowd when David Rodriguez found the net in just the fourth minute, giving the visitors an early advantage. However, Messi wasted little time responding, calmly equalising only seven minutes later to restore confidence for the hosts.

The momentum quickly shifted in Miami’s favour. Venezuelan midfielder Telasco Segovia completed the turnaround in the 26th minute with a well-taken goal after sustained pressure from the home side.

Just before the halftime whistle, Messi struck again with a trademark finish, extending Miami’s lead and putting the match firmly under their control. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Brazilian defender Micael added another goal, capping off an outstanding opening 45 minutes as Inter Miami entered the break with a commanding 4-1 advantage.

Although Rafa Llorente pulled one back for Atletico San Luis in the second half, the visitors were unable to mount a serious comeback as Miami comfortably saw out the contest to collect all three points.

Messi’s latest performance highlighted his enduring quality and his ability to influence major matches. Since arriving in Florida in 2023, the Argentine icon has transformed Inter Miami into one of North America’s most competitive clubs, leading them to their first Leagues Cup title that same year.

Elsewhere in the Leagues Cup, Dallas secured a 2-0 victory over Queretaro, while Leon claimed a narrow 1-0 away win over Nashville in another tightly contested fixture.

With Messi in record-breaking form and Inter Miami starting their campaign in style, the 2026 Leagues Cup promises more excitement as the tournament progresses.

He commended Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan’s military leadership for their peace efforts in the region, calling them commendable and constructive. “The vision shown by both sides is remarkable. We are committed to turning this goodwill into tangible outcomes,” he added. He also expressed Iran’s interest in expanding cooperation beyond energy into agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and border trade.     Veteran television director, writer, and producer Ralph W. Hemecker, best known for his work on acclaimed series including Blue Bloods, The X-Files, Once Upon a Time, and The Flash, has died at the age of 65. Hemecker passed away at his home in Glendale, California, on July 10, according to his family. A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.  The news has sparked an outpouring of tributes from actors, filmmakers, and fans who worked with the respected television director throughout his more than three-decade career. Among those paying tribute was actress Lana Parrilla, who starred in Once Upon a Time. She described Hemecker as “one of the kindest, most generous souls” she had ever known, praising both his talent behind the camera and his warmth as a friend.  Born on June 12, 1961, Hemecker studied English at Bucknell University, where he discovered a passion for filmmaking while creating short films. He later honed his craft by studying filmmaking at New York University before launching a career in production and post-production. His early experience behind the scenes eventually led him to directing television, where he quickly earned a reputation for his creative storytelling and strong visual style.  Hemecker’s breakthrough came in 2000 when he directed the television movie Witchblade, which later evolved into a successful TV series. He went on to serve as the show’s executive producer, writer, and showrunner for two seasons, cementing his status as one of television’s most versatile creative talents.  Over the years, Hemecker built an impressive résumé, directing episodes of numerous hit series, including Blue Bloods, The X-Files, Millennium, Ghost Whisperer, Numb3rs, Nikita, The Vampire Diaries, The Flash, and Once Upon a Time. His ability to move effortlessly between crime dramas, science fiction, fantasy, and action made him one of the industry’s most sought-after television directors.  In addition to directing, Hemecker founded Mythic Films in 2000, expanding his work into producing and developing original projects. His most recent directorial effort was the 2025 feature film Breed of Greed, demonstrating that his passion for storytelling remained as strong as ever.  Hemecker is survived by his father, sister, brother, two stepdaughters, nieces, nephews, and extended family. A celebration of his life is expected to be announced at a later date.  Ralph W. Hemecker leaves behind a remarkable television legacy defined by creativity, professionalism, and unforgettable storytelling. His work entertained millions across generations, and his influence will continue to be felt through the iconic series and memorable episodes he helped bring to life.

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in Islamabad on Wednesday. He added that both countries had supported each other during difficult times. The regional situation was a major part of the discussion. Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with Kuwait’s leadership and people. He strongly condemned attacks on Kuwait and other friendly Gulf countries during the ongoing regional conflict. He said Pakistan stood with its brotherly Gulf partners during the challenging situation. Shehbaz said Pakistan remained committed to promoting peace and stability in the region. He said Islamabad was playing the role of an honest and sincere mediator and facilitator in efforts to ease tensions. The prime minister stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy.
