LAHORE: The Punjab government has intensified its province-wide campaign against Afghan nationals residing in Pakistan without valid legal documentation, with more than 140,000 people repatriated from Punjab so far, according to the Home Department.

The department said its Foreign National Security Cell was continuing monitoring and enforcement operations across the province under the government’s national repatriation policy. Individuals found to be residing illegally are being detained and transferred to designated holding centres, where registration and other formalities are completed before their return to Afghanistan.

According to official figures, a total of 2,689,295 Afghan nationals have been repatriated from Pakistan, including 140,468 from Punjab.

The Home Department said 39 holding centres are currently operational across Punjab, with 188 Afghan nationals presently housed there. Temporary accommodation, registration and repatriation arrangements have been established at these facilities, while those cleared for return are handed over to Afghan authorities at the Torkham border.

Officials said checks were being conducted in residential areas and markets across the province as part of the ongoing enforcement campaign. The department maintained that the action was specifically aimed at individuals staying in Pakistan without legal status.

The Home Department urged citizens to report cases involving illegal residence, identity fraud or suspicious activities to Emergency Helpline 15, assuring that the identities of informants would be kept confidential.

The Foreign National Security Cell is continuing province-wide coordination and monitoring to support the government’s repatriation programme, the department said.

      Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered the provincial police authorities to take strict action against officers with records of corruption and misconduct, directing that such officials should not be appointed as Station House Officers (SHOs).   According to sources familiar with the development and officials in the Chief Minister’s Office, Maryam Nawaz has instructed Inspector General of Police Punjab to thoroughly screen officers holding important field positions and remove those found to have questionable records. The IG Punjab has been given one week to complete the process and submit a progress report to the Chief Minister’s Office. The Chief Minister stressed that officers known for corruption should not be given charge of police stations anywhere in Punjab. She directed the police leadership to ensure that appointments to the SHO position are based on integrity, professional conduct and performance rather than influence or other considerations.   Under the new instructions, police officers facing credible allegations or having a record of corruption will not be considered for appointment as SHOs. The police hierarchy has also been directed to identify and remove what the government described as “bad elements” from key positions. Maryam Nawaz further ordered the police department to adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward crimes against women and children. She called for immediate action against suspects involved in such offences and emphasized that cases involving vulnerable groups should be handled promptly and professionally. The Chief Minister’s latest instructions are being viewed as another step toward her administration’s efforts to improve policing and strengthen public confidence in law-enforcement institutions. She has previously emphasized the need for a people-friendly police force that provides services to citizens without discrimination, corruption or unnecessary interference. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court rejected the request for a 30-day remand and instead approved a four-day extension in police custody. The case was registered at Islamabad’s Shalimar Police Station under charges related to a protest concerning recent unrest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Mushtaq Ahmad’s legal team has previously claimed that he was detained after attempting to enter AJK to express solidarity with people affected by recent violence in the region. They alleged he was stopped by security personnel at Azad Pattan Bridge, denied entry into AJK and later taken into custody by Punjab Police while returning to Islamabad.     153mm rain puts Gujrat on high alert as new drainage interventions help avert major urban flooding

    GUJRAT: Torrential monsoon rain measuring 153 millimetres battered Gujrat, triggering a district-wide rain emergency and keeping the civil administration, Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) and other civic departments on high alert. Despite the intense downpour, officials claimed that newly completed drainage interventions and a coordinated emergency response helped prevent widespread urban flooding in the city. Deputy Commissioner Noor-ul-Ain Qureshi remained in the field throughout the operation, inspecting drainage arrangements and monitoring the performance of five newly completed interventions executed by the Irrigation Department under the Punjab Development Programme. The projects, completed in a record five months, were designed to protect Gujrat from sheet flow entering the city from the Bhimber and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) side during heavy monsoon rains. According to the district administration, each of the five newly constructed drains has the capacity to carry 200 cusecs of water, diverting the incoming sheet flow towards Bhinder Nullah and Halsi Nullah. Officials described the projects as a significant step towards improving Gujrat’s flood resilience, saying they played an important role in reducing pressure on the city’s drainage network during the latest spell of heavy rain. Meanwhile, Managing Director WASA Gujrat Kashan Hafeez Butt supervised rain emergency operations across the city, with 20 emergency teams deployed in the agency’s three operational zones. Dewatering sets, suction machines and heavy machinery remained operational throughout the day to remove accumulated rainwater from roads, markets and residential areas. Among the worst-hit locations was Madina Bazaar Staff Gali, where rainwater accumulated to nearly one foot. WASA teams carried out continuous pumping operations before clearing the area. Water also collected at Dhakki Chowk, where approximately six inches of standing water was removed after several hours of drainage work. Officials said traffic on Rehman Shaheed Road, Shadman Colony and other major arteries remained largely uninterrupted due to the timely deployment of emergency teams. Field staff continued monitoring low-lying areas to ensure rainwater did not accumulate again as intermittent showers continued. Residents acknowledged that several streets experienced temporary waterlogging during the peak of the rainfall but said conditions improved as emergency crews reached affected areas. Commuters reported slow-moving traffic in parts of the city during the morning because of reduced visibility and rainwater on roads. The district administration maintained close coordination with WASA, the Irrigation Department, Rescue 1122 and other relevant agencies throughout the operation. Officials said emergency personnel would remain on alert as further monsoon rains are forecast, with machinery stationed at vulnerable locations for immediate deployment if required. Authorities also appealed to residents to cooperate by avoiding the disposal of garbage into storm-water drains, warning that blocked drainage channels significantly reduce the efficiency of the drainage system during heavy rainfall. The latest monsoon spell once again tested Gujrat’s urban drainage infrastructure. However, officials maintained that the combination of newly completed irrigation works, continuous field monitoring by the deputy commissioner and round-the-clock WASA operations enabled the city to withstand the 153mm rainfall without any major disruption to traffic or public life. The district administration said all departments would continue monitoring weather conditions and remain prepared to respond swiftly to any further rain-related emergencies.
