Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye set for strategic…

Pakistan’s top civilian and military leadership offered prayers at Islam’s holiest site on Friday as Islamabad prepared for what diplomatic sources describe as a pivotal round of high-level engagements in Saudi Arabia that could reshape strategic cooperation among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi and members of the Pakistani delegation performed Umrah during their official visit to the Kingdom.

Before performing Umrah, the delegation was granted the rare honour of a special visit inside the Holy Kaaba. Following the pilgrimage, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Field Marshal Asim Munir and members of the delegation offered special prayers for Pakistan’s peace, economic prosperity, national security, the unity of the Muslim Ummah and lasting regional and global peace.

The visit comes at a strategically significant moment for the region. Diplomatic sources say Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is also expected to arrive in Saudi Arabia, where a possible trilateral engagement involving the leaders of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye is expected on the sidelines of high-level consultations.

According to diplomatic sources, the expected meeting could pave the way for a major expansion in defence cooperation, with discussions likely to focus on military collaboration, defence industrial partnerships, regional security coordination and strategic cooperation among the three countries.

The Saudi visit underscores Pakistan’s growing diplomatic profile and its deepening strategic partnerships with Riyadh and Ankara. Officials view the engagements as an opportunity to advance cooperation in defence, investment, regional stability and economic development, while reinforcing Pakistan’s role in promoting peace and security across the Muslim world.

    Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police have announced rewards for information leading to the arrest or identification of 83 wanted terrorists. According to a list issued by the police, the total reward amount stands at Rs285.8 million. The Central Police Office said financial rewards would be given to individuals who provide information that helps authorities locate, arrest or identify the wanted terrorists. Police said the identity of anyone providing information would be kept completely confidential. The rewards announced for the wanted individuals range from Rs500,000 to Rs100 million, depending on the importance and threat level of each suspect. The list includes wanted individuals from several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Dera Ismail Khan, Kulachi, Darazinda, Daraban and Paharpur. Police urged citizens to remain vigilant and closely monitor suspicious activities linked to terrorists and Fitna al-Khawarij. Authorities appealed to the public to share credible information with law enforcement agencies. They stressed that the confidentiality of informants would be fully protected. The reward scheme is part of police efforts to locate wanted militants and strengthen security across the province.     AJK assembly to elect prime minister on August 27

    MUZAFFARABAD: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly will elect the new prime minister on August 27, with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in a strong position to secure the top office. The election schedule was issued on Wednesday, setting out the timeline for nomination papers, scrutiny, withdrawal and polling. Under the schedule, candidates will submit their nomination papers between 9:30am and 10:30am. The scrutiny process will take place from 10:30am to 10:45am. The list of candidates will be displayed at 11am. Candidates will have 30 minutes, from 11am to 11:30am, to withdraw their nominations. The final list of candidates will be issued at noon. Polling for the office of prime minister will begin at 12:30pm in the Legislative Assembly. The newly elected prime minister is scheduled to take the oath between 4pm and 5pm on the same day. The PML-N has nominated party president Shah Ghulam Qadir for the position. Based on the current strength of the assembly, he is considered the leading candidate for the office. The recent AJK elections were conducted in three phases between July 27 and August 10. Polling was held in 38 of the 45 directly contested constituencies. The PML-N emerged as the largest parliamentary group by winning 25 seats, while the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) secured 12 seats. The PML-N’s position was further strengthened after the lone elected member of the Awami Dast-o-Bazu party joined the ruling alliance. The PML-N currently has the backing of 32 members, compared with 14 members supporting the PPP. The numbers give the PML-N a clear advantage ahead of the prime ministerial election. The political balance was also reflected in the recent elections for the assembly’s top offices. PML-N AJK Secretary General Chaudhry Tariq Farooq was elected speaker with 32 votes. Ahmed Raza Qadri also secured 32 votes to become deputy speaker. PPP nominee Qasim Majid received 13 votes in the speaker’s election, while PPP candidate Amir Abdul Ghaffar Lone secured 13 votes in the deputy speaker’s contest. One PPP vote was declared invalid. The new assembly formally began its parliamentary term on August 24, when 46 newly elected members took their oaths. Outgoing Speaker Latif Akbar administered the oath during the inaugural sitting.
