Meet Abu Rohan, who performed 80+ TV nikahs

If you have watched Pakistani dramas with any regularity, you have almost certainly seen Abu Rohan, even if you did not know his name. The senior actor has become one of the most recognisable faces in the industry, not for playing a hero or a villain, but for the very specific and endlessly repeated role of the Nikah Khuwan, the marriage officiant who presides over the wedding ceremonies that are a staple of Pakistani television storytelling.
His face has appeared in nikah scenes across some of the most watched dramas in recent years, including Tere Bin, Siyani, Sunn Mere Dil and Yunhi. For many viewers, his presence on screen has become a kind of shorthand for the moment a drama is about to reach its emotional peak.
In a recent interview with BBC Urdu, Abu Rohan finally spoke at length about how this unusual acting career began, and the story is as unexpected as the career itself.
It started not in a drama studio but in a jewellery shop. Abu Rohan is, by profession, a successful jeweller based in Karachi. Around 35 years ago, a television channel invited him onto a morning show not to act but to answer viewer questions about gold. He explained what happened next in his own words.
“Around 35 years ago, a television channel invited me as a jeweler. The owners wanted me to appear on a show where I would answer viewers’ questions about gold. When I appeared on the morning show, I caught the attention of drama makers. They felt I was comfortable in front of the camera, and that’s how I started acting in television dramas.”
What followed was a career that spans decades and more productions than most full-time actors manage. “So far, I have solemnized Nikah in around 80 to 85 dramas,” he said. He also revealed that part of his career unfolded outside Pakistan. “I also lived in Bahrain for nearly eight years, where I took part in dramas.”
On the nature of the role itself, he offered an insight that many viewers may not have considered. While the nikah khuwan is often a static presence on screen, drama does not always let him remain so. “There are scenes where fights break out during the Nikah, and I have to give different expressions. Usually, it’s a static character, but sometimes it requires proper acting. Directors and producers also cast me in other roles.”
His fame among audiences has also brought some unusual requests, which he handles with thoughtful care. “Many people have invited me to officiate Nikah at their real-life weddings, but I politely refused because Nikah is a matter of religion. However, after the Nikah ceremony, I sometimes offer prayers for the couple’s happiness.”
For a man who came to television to talk about gold, Abu Rohan has ended up leaving a very different kind of impression, one measured not in carats but in the countless wedding scenes that have made him one of Pakistani drama’s most quietly beloved presences.

Talal Chaudhry hits back at Bilawal over AJK polls

Islamabad: Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry has criticized PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari over his reaction to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections, saying political leaders should accept electoral outcomes with grace instead of complaining after defeat. He claimed voters supported the PML-N because of its governance and development record, adding that people across Pakistan aspire to the same level of progress achieved in Punjab. The meeting was attended by district and constituency coordinators, along with PML-N candidates from Poonch Division, where party leaders also reviewed campaign preparations and polling strategy for the third phase of the elections.

Brother shoots sister for marrying man of her choi…

In a heartbreaking turn of events in Punjab’s Rawalpindi district, a 17-year-old girl was brutally shot and killed by her own brother near Sukho Road in Gujar Khan, just days after she was brought back home under the guise of family reconciliation. The victim had initially fled her home in January during a school vacation to marry a man of her own choice, after which the couple relocated to Karachi to build a life together. Seeking to mend broken ties, the victim’s brother recently traveled to Karachi, brokered peace with the couple, and persuaded them to return. Upon their arrival in Gujar Khan, he arranged a rented house for the newlyweds. However, the promise of harmony shattered when the father visited the rented residence to check on his daughter. A heated argument broke out at the scene, culminating in the brother pulling out a handgun and opening fire on his sister in front of family members. Rawalpindi police have registered a murder case based on the father’s statement, and an investigation into the incident is currently underway to apprehend the suspect.

NCCIA cracks down on cybercrime, arrests 4 suspect…

LAHORE: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Punjab has intensified its campaign against cybercrime, arresting four suspects in coordinated operations carried out in Lahore, Faisalabad and Multan. The arrests are linked to alleged cases of online harassment, blackmail and the misuse of social media platforms. According to the agency, legal proceedings have been initiated on the basis of digital evidence collected during the investigations. Authorities have also seized mobile phones and other electronic devices from the suspects, all of which have been sent for forensic examination to support the ongoing inquiries. In Lahore, officials arrested Haroon Qureshi, who is accused of repeatedly targeting women through various social media platforms by allegedly harassing, threatening and intimidating them. Investigators are examining the digital material recovered from his devices to determine the full extent of the alleged offences. In a separate operation in Faisalabad, NCCIA apprehended Abdul Rehman and Muhammad Ayaz. Preliminary investigations suggest the pair allegedly blackmailed a married couple using objectionable digital content and are accused of extorting money from them. During the raid, investigators recovered two mobile phones, WhatsApp accounts and alleged objectionable digital material related to several women. The seized evidence has been forwarded for forensic analysis to identify additional victims and any wider criminal network. Meanwhile, in Multan, authorities arrested Farhad Abbas on allegations of sharing a woman’s private photographs and videos on social media and using them to blackmail her. Investigators are reviewing the suspect’s digital records to identify possible accomplices and determine whether more victims may be involved. The NCCIA said forensic examination of the recovered digital evidence is continuing in all cases and investigations are being conducted in accordance with legal procedures. The agency also urged the public, particularly women, to report incidents of online harassment, blackmail, fake social media accounts or any other form of cybercrime without delay so that prompt legal action can be taken against those responsible.

Michigan cyclosporiasis outbreak grows as health officials expand investigation

Michigan has reported a sharp increase in cases of cyclosporiasis as health authorities continue to monitor one of the largest outbreaks of the intestinal illness in recent years. According to the latest update from the state’s health department, the total number of reported cases has climbed to 9,253, an increase of 1,077 infections since the previous report issued on Friday. The outbreak has led to 160 hospitalizations across the state. However, officials said no deaths have been recorded so far. Public health authorities are continuing to track new infections while working with federal agencies to identify the source of the outbreak and prevent additional cases. Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite. People usually become infected after consuming food or water contaminated with human waste. Raw fruits and vegetables are among the most common sources of infection because they are often eaten without cooking, allowing the parasite to survive if proper food safety measures are not followed. The outbreak in Michigan is part of a wider public health concern affecting several states across the United States. Federal data show that 4,173 laboratory confirmed domestic cases have been recorded nationwide. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reviewing more than 7,400 suspected cases that have not yet been confirmed through laboratory testing. Many of these reports have come from Michigan and neighboring Ohio. The US Food and Drug Administration and the CDC have expanded their joint investigation after identifying additional infections in four more states. Health officials are focusing on a possible link between the outbreak and shredded iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico. The investigation now includes cases reported in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Authorities are examining distribution records and supply chains to determine how contaminated produce may have reached consumers in different parts of the country. According to the FDA, epidemiological data collected by the CDC indicate that 1,947 people infected with the Cyclospora parasite had eaten food from Taco Bell restaurants before becoming ill. Investigators believe many of those infections may be connected to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms and served at Taco Bell locations. However, officials say the investigation is still ongoing and a final conclusion has not yet been reached. Health experts have reported cases of cyclosporiasis in at least 41 states this year, although not all infections are believed to be related to the current outbreak. Investigators are continuing to determine which cases are connected to the suspected contaminated lettuce and which may have originated from other sources. Symptoms of cyclosporiasis often include prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue and loss of appetite. While most people recover with appropriate treatment, the illness can be more serious for older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Health authorities continue to advise consumers to follow food safety practices and remain alert for symptoms as the investigation into the outbreak continues.

Niall and Harry were too nervous for zero-gravity shoot, reveals Louis

Louis Tomlinson has shared a fun, previously untold detail about the making of One Direction’s Drag Me Down music video. A clip of the singer has resurfaced online. In it, he looks back at the time the band filmed at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. One Direction remains the only band to ever shoot a music video at the facility. According to Tomlinson, the original concept was even bigger than what fans finally saw. The band had planned to film a segment in actual zero-gravity conditions. But the plan never made it to the screen. The reason, Tomlinson revealed, was simple. Niall Horan got nervous about the idea. “And he will not be too happy about me telling this but we didn’t do it cause Niall was too scared,” Tomlinson said in the clip. The host then pushed back, asking if it was really just Niall who refused. Tomlinson didn’t let Harry Styles off the hook either. “To be fair, it was Niall and Harry to be fair,” he said, laughing. Fans have long loved Drag Me Down for its space-age visuals. Now it turns out the video could have looked even more dramatic, had the full zero-gravity plan gone ahead. Drag Me Down was released in 2015. It served as the lead single from One Direction’s fifth and final studio album, Made in the A.M. The music video saw all four remaining members, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne, suited up in real spacesuits. They filmed around training jets on location at the space center. The song went on to become one of the band’s biggest global hits. It broke streaming records within hours of release. It also topped charts in multiple countries. The track later won Best Music Video at the BRIT Awards in 2016. More than a decade later, One Direction’s fans are still discovering new layers to their favourite era. This latest story, straight from Tomlinson himself, has only added to the nostalgia surrounding the band’s space-themed video. For many longtime fans, hearing these old memories resurface feels like a small gift. It’s a reminder of just how much creative risk-taking went into the band’s biggest moments, even the ones that never made the final cut.

Infantino faces fresh challenge from three football confederations

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing renewed criticism after three major football confederations jointly challenged his leadership and decision-making. UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) issued a strongly worded letter on Monday. They stressed that football is a collective institution and should not be controlled by any single individual. The latest criticism follows Infantino’s controversial proposal to allow private investment in FIFA competitions, including the World Cup. The plan was withdrawn only days after it was announced following strong opposition from several football bodies. The three confederations had previously criticised the proposal. Their latest statement indicates that tensions with FIFA’s leadership have not eased despite the withdrawal of the plan. The organisations argued that leadership in football should be based on responsibility, transparency and collective decision-making. They accused FIFA’s leadership of failing to meet those standards. The dispute could become particularly significant ahead of next year’s FIFA presidential election. Infantino is expected to seek a fourth and final term in office. The election is scheduled to take place in Rabat next March, while candidates must declare their intentions by November 18. CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani is considered a potential challenger to Infantino. Infantino had previously appeared likely to face little opposition after FIFA oversaw a successful 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. However, the private investment controversy has changed the political landscape within world football. UEFA played a major role in forcing the proposal off the table. European football officials had warned that they could consider boycotting World Cups if the investment plan went ahead. Such a move could have seriously affected the tournament because it could have involved major football nations, including Spain, France and England. The three confederations said FIFA’s own explanation of the controversy had focused too heavily on communication problems. They argued that the issue was more serious and reflected what they described as a failure of judgment. They also questioned an emergency meeting in Morocco where senior FIFA officials expressed support for Infantino. According to the confederations, the meeting did not adequately address their concerns because only selected members of FIFA’s management leadership were involved. They argued that FIFA’s leadership should engage directly with its wider institutional structure and staff. Infantino still retains support in several parts of the football world. The Confederation of African Football has backed him, while South American football’s governing body CONMEBOL remains broadly supportive. Support for him also exists within CONCACAF and the AFC, although the confederations do not vote as unified blocs in the FIFA presidential election. The dispute comes after Infantino spent a decade at the helm of FIFA and oversaw major changes to the World Cup and the organisation’s distribution of financial resources. The three confederations acknowledged that football had experienced significant growth during the past decade. However, they stressed that these developments were achieved through cooperation between FIFA, continental confederations, national associations and thousands of people involved in the sport.
