Brandon King injured after brilliant Babar Azam run-out

TRINIDAD: West Indies endured a significant setback on day three of the second Test against Pakistan after opener Brandon King was forced off the field with a painful lower back injury moments after producing a brilliant run-out to dismiss Babar Azam.

The dramatic incident unfolded during Pakistan’s first innings when Babar, who resumed play on an overnight score of 84, looked well placed to end his long wait for a Test century. However, a costly mix-up with fellow batter Abdullah Shafique brought his innings to an abrupt end.

Attempting a quick single after guiding the ball into the off side, Babar found himself stranded halfway down the pitch as King reacted sharply from cover. The West Indies fielder gathered the ball cleanly and unleashed a direct hit that caught the Pakistan star well short of his crease.

While the dismissal gave the hosts a much-needed breakthrough, it came at a heavy price. King appeared to injure his lower back during the throwing action and immediately collapsed to the ground in visible pain. Medical staff rushed onto the field, and after several minutes of treatment, the 31-year-old was taken off on a stretcher, leaving teammates and spectators concerned.

Cricket West Indies later confirmed that King had suffered lower back muscle spasms and would take no further part in day three’s play as a precaution. Team officials added that his condition would continue to be monitored by the medical staff before a decision is made on his availability for the remainder of the match.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan resumed on 266-2, with Babar and Abdullah adopting a cautious approach as the West Indies bowling attack maintained disciplined lines and restricted scoring opportunities. The pressure eventually paid off with Babar’s dismissal in the 75th over after he added just two runs to his overnight total.

King’s injury has added fresh concern for the West Indies camp at a crucial stage of the Test, with the hosts now awaiting further medical updates while trying to keep Pakistan’s batting lineup under control. The coming days could prove decisive not only for the outcome of the match but also for King’s immediate cricketing future.

Tanvir said structural weaknesses continue to slow economic progress and called for fresh leadership and institutional reforms to strengthen the country’s administrative framework. Participants also expressed concern over Pakistan’s social and economic indicators. They noted that a large segment of the population continues to live below the poverty line, while unemployment remains a major challenge, particularly among young people. Several speakers said temporary welfare measures alone cannot address the country’s long-term economic issues.     Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar has issued a statement regarding the transfer of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan from Adiala Jail for medical examination. Tarar said Imran was taken to hospital between the night of August 20 and 21 under strict security arrangements. According to the minister, Imran was examined by qualified doctors, including an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician. The doctors declared him medically fit, he said. Tarar clarified that the medical examination was conducted at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), where doctors from Shifa International Hospital were also present. He said Imran was initially scheduled to be taken to Shifa International Hospital. However, PTI workers allegedly created a security situation outside the hospital and along the route, prompting authorities to take him to Pims instead. The minister said the medical examination at Pims found Imran to be in good health. Tarar added that Imran’s sister, Uzma Khan, remained present throughout the medical examination and treatment process. Imran Khan returns to Adiala Jail After completing the medical examination, Imran was shifted back to Adiala Jail at around 5am on August 21, Tarar said. The minister maintained that medical facilities had previously been provided to Imran whenever required and that the government would continue to ensure necessary healthcare in the future. Jail sources also confirmed that Imran had been taken back to Adiala Jail. According to the sources, he was transported from the hospital to the prison under extremely tight security.

    Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has dismissed claims that Pakistan’s governance system has collapsed, while firmly opposing the creation of new provinces in Sindh and warning that no violence or bloodshed will be allowed over the issue. Speaking to reporters after attending the Mining Technical Conference 2026 in Karachi, the chief minister said the Constitution provides a clear legal mechanism for altering provincial boundaries. He stressed that any such move can only take place if the concerned provincial assembly approves it with a two-thirds majority. Murad Ali Shah said the Sindh Assembly has repeatedly passed unanimous resolutions opposing the creation of any new province in the province. He maintained that there has been no change in the assembly’s position and that the issue should be addressed only through constitutional and democratic procedures. The chief minister said public debate on administrative reforms is acceptable, but warned against creating unnecessary tensions or presenting the issue in a way that could provoke conflict. He said no one would be allowed to exploit the matter to create unrest in Sindh. His remarks came after Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi recently suggested that Pakistan’s existing governance system was no longer capable of addressing national challenges and called for administrative reforms, including the creation of new administrative units. Responding to questions about public demonstrations, Murad Ali Shah said peaceful protest is a constitutional right but should be held in accordance with the law. He urged organisers to obtain permission from the relevant authorities before staging protests. The chief minister also highlighted the provincial government’s agricultural policy, saying arrangements have been made to procure one million tonnes of wheat to protect local farmers and stabilise the market. Speaking about economic development, he said Sindh continues to expand its mining and energy sectors. He announced that electricity generation from Thar coal is expected to increase from 2,640 megawatts to 3,000 megawatts in the near future. Murad Ali Shah said Thar’s coal fields are producing more than 15 million tonnes of coal annually, helping Pakistan reduce its dependence on imported fuel and saving more than $1.5 billion in foreign exchange each year.
