KARACHI: The investigation into the death of young businessman Mir Raza has taken a new turn after his family’s lawyer, Jibran Nasir, claimed that the victim was allegedly abducted and tortured for around 12 hours before he was killed.

Speaking at a press conference alongside Mir Raza’s parents at their residence, Nasir said information gathered during the investigation had raised serious questions about the circumstances surrounding the businessman’s death.

According to the lawyer, CCTV footage showing Mir Raza emerged on July 28, while his body was recovered the following day. Nasir said a chemical analysis report from the University of Karachi found evidence of acid on the victim’s clothing, along with what he described as a bullet mark from the rear side of the shirt.

Nasir further claimed that the condition of Mir Raza’s face was not simply the result of decomposition but may have been caused by acid. He also alleged that the victim was given a local anesthetic or another substance that caused him to become unconscious.

The lawyer said the body appeared to have been dead for approximately 20 to 22 hours when it was recovered. Based on that estimated timeline, he argued that Mir Raza may have remained in captivity for around 12 hours before his death.

Nasir alleged that the businessman was abducted during that period and subjected to torture. These claims have not yet been independently established and remain part of the allegations surrounding the investigation.

The lawyer also raised questions about Mir Raza’s digital devices and financial activity. He claimed that someone had accessed the victim’s phone and emptied a cryptocurrency account, allegedly in an attempt to create an impression that Mir Raza had been facing financial difficulties or was in debt.

Nasir further questioned the handling of key evidence, claiming that the station house officer was carrying the digital video recorder (DVR), while Mir Raza’s smartwatch and mobile phone were reportedly in the possession of other individuals.

The allegations have intensified scrutiny of the investigation as Mir Raza’s family seeks answers about his final hours and the circumstances leading to his death.

Investigators are expected to examine CCTV recordings, forensic reports, digital devices, financial transactions and other evidence to establish a detailed timeline.

Police have yet to publicly establish the full circumstances of Mir Raza’s death or identify those responsible. The allegations made by his family’s lawyer will need to be verified through forensic evidence and the ongoing investigation.

    Umerkot flour millers reject Rs128/kg official rate, seek fresh price review

    UMERKOT: Flour mill owners in Umerkot district have rejected the government-fixed price of Rs128 per kilogram, arguing that the sharp increase in wheat prices has pushed their production costs far above the officially notified rate. The millers said the prevailing wheat price in the open market had climbed to around Rs125 per kilogram, while additional expenses related to milling, labour, electricity, transportation and other operations had increased the overall cost of producing flour to nearly Rs140 per kilogram. They maintained that selling flour at Rs128 per kilogram was therefore commercially unsustainable and would force mill owners to operate at a loss. In this regard, representatives of the flour milling industry have submitted written applications to the Mirpurkhas commissioner and the Umerkot deputy commissioner, requesting authorities to reconsider the existing flour price and determine a new rate based on prevailing market conditions and production costs. The mill owners also raised objections to what they described as excessive administrative action against flour mills across the district. They specifically complained about raids and wheat seizures allegedly carried out by assistant commissioners in Umerkot, Kunri, Samaro and Pithoro. According to the millers, government policy allows flour mill owners to maintain wheat stocks of up to 850 bags per stone at their mills or designated warehouses. They alleged that despite the provision, local administrative officials had conducted raids on mills and storage facilities and seized wheat stocks. The mill owners termed the alleged seizures unjustified and said such actions were creating additional difficulties for an already financially pressured industry. They urged the authorities to ensure that enforcement measures were carried out strictly in accordance with the relevant government policy. The millers further called for an investigation into alleged irregularities involving food department inspectors. They demanded that senior provincial officials examine the complaints and take appropriate action if any wrongdoing is established. They appealed to the Sindh chief minister, provincial food secretary, Mirpurkhas commissioner, Umerkot deputy commissioner and other concerned authorities to intervene in the matter and review the officially fixed flour price. The mill owners argued that the price should be determined after taking into account the current cost of wheat as well as electricity, labour, transportation, maintenance and other expenses associated with flour production. They warned that continued enforcement of a price they consider economically unviable could increase financial losses for flour mills and put further pressure on the district’s milling industry. The millers said they were willing to cooperate with the administration in maintaining the availability of flour and preventing unjustified price increases, but stressed that any official pricing mechanism must reflect actual market and production costs. They also urged the provincial government to establish a transparent mechanism for monitoring wheat stocks and flour prices so that disputes between millers and local administrations could be resolved through clear rules rather than repeated raids and seizures.

    Pakistan to lead new Turkey-Saudi defence pact

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to take the first three-year leadership of a new secretariat established under the defence agreement signed by Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia in Makkah on Aug 7, giving Islamabad a prominent role in coordinating the emerging regional security framework. According to Turkish and international media reports, the secretariat will serve as the central mechanism for implementing decisions taken by the three countries and coordinating their growing defence cooperation. After Pakistan’s initial three-year term, leadership is expected to pass to Saudi Arabia and then Türkiye. The agreement is built around a collective-security principle under which an armed attack against one member would be regarded as an attack against all three. However, unlike NATO’s automatic response mechanism, the pact leaves the nature of any response to be determined according to the circumstances and the request of the affected country. A high-level council comprising foreign and defence ministers as well as military chiefs is also expected to oversee the arrangement. The council is expected to meet twice a year, while cooperation could range from intelligence sharing and logistics to direct military assistance when required. The partnership also places a strong emphasis on defence technology. The three countries plan to expand cooperation in unmanned systems, electronic warfare and artificial intelligence, alongside joint military exercises designed to improve coordination among their armed forces. Joint defence production, research and technology transfer are also part of the broader framework. For Pakistan, the first leadership term could prove strategically significant. Islamabad already maintains longstanding defence ties with both Ankara and Riyadh, and its role at the secretariat could give it greater influence in regional security diplomacy. Türkiye has stressed that the agreement is defensive and is not directed against any particular country. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the pact is intended to strengthen regional security rather than replace existing alliances. With the Middle East facing continued instability, the new arrangement could become an important test of how effectively three regional powers can turn political solidarity into practical defence cooperation.

    PM rebukes Islamabad officials over ceremonial bug…

    ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed serious displeasure over the use of a ceremonial horse-drawn buggy by Islamabad’s chief commissioner and inspector general during the August 14 Independence Day celebrations. An official advisory issued by the Establishment Division said the incident had attracted widespread public criticism and prompted the Prime Minister to take a serious view of the conduct. The advisory was issued to Islamabad Chief Commissioner Lt (retd) Sohail Ashraf and Inspector General of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi. According to the advisory, the prime minister believed that the display of pomp and show created an impression of privilege, ostentation and personal glorification, which was contrary to the principles of public service. It stressed that government officials entrusted with public offices were expected to demonstrate humility, restraint, dignity and sound judgment. The Establishment Division warned that such conduct could weaken public confidence in government institutions and fall short of the standards expected from senior officials. The two officials were advised to exercise greater care in carrying out their duties and ensure that similar incidents did not happen again. The controversy emerged after images and videos of the officials travelling in the ceremonial buggy during the Independence Day event circulated widely on social media, drawing criticism from the public. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi subsequently defended the officials, saying they were not responsible for the decision to use the buggy. He explained that the vehicle had originally been arranged for the chief guest, while he and the chief guest were delayed because of a meeting involving the president and prime minister. Naqvi said the two officials had initially been reluctant to begin the programme in the absence of the chief guest and the minister but were instructed to proceed to avoid inconvenience to the public. Despite the clarification, the incident continued to attract attention, ultimately leading to the formal advisory from the Establishment Division.
