Modi ramps up Gen Z outreach on Instagram

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a fresh social media campaign aimed at winning over young voters, shifting to a more informal and relatable style on Instagram after recent student-led protests exposed growing frustration over jobs and education.

The campaign features selfie-style videos, casual greetings and short clips with popular music, reflecting a departure from the highly polished political messaging traditionally associated with Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The strategy is designed to connect with India’s Generation Z audience, which is expected to play a decisive role in the 2029 general election.

The renewed digital push follows nationwide protests by students and job seekers last month after an examination paper leak triggered widespread anger over the country’s education and employment system. The demonstrations eventually led to the resignation of India’s education minister.

In response, BJP leaders and government ministries have increased their presence on youth-focused platforms by sharing short videos with minimal editing and a more spontaneous style. Officials believe authentic content is more likely to resonate with younger audiences than carefully scripted political messaging.

Political observers say Instagram and similar platforms reward creativity, humour and genuine interaction, making them more challenging environments for traditional political campaigns. They note that recent protests gained significant momentum through viral reels and short videos that amplified public dissatisfaction.

Beyond social media, the BJP and its ideological affiliate, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), have also expanded outreach efforts by organising events and discussions targeting students and first-time voters.

With more than half of India’s 1.4 billion population under the age of 35, analysts say younger voters are expected to become one of the most influential electoral groups in the next general election.

Saudi Arabia names new envoy to Pakistan

Saudi Arabia has appointed Dr Rajeh bin Tami Al-Baqami as its new ambassador to Pakistan, replacing Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki. The appointment comes as Pakistan and Saudi Arabia continue to strengthen their longstanding partnership in defence, investment, trade and regional security. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Al-Baqami was among eight newly appointed ambassadors who recently took the oath of office. The ministry shared photographs of the newly appointed envoys and said they had been sworn in on behalf of the Saudi leadership. Al-Baqami brings both military and diplomatic experience to his new position. He previously served as a major general in the Saudi armed forces before joining the Foreign Ministry at ambassadorial rank. He holds a doctorate in Human Resource Management from Brunel University London. His appointment comes at a time when Islamabad and Riyadh are expanding their strategic cooperation. The two countries recently formalised their defence partnership through a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement. Under the agreement, aggression against either country is considered an attack on both, further strengthening their long-standing military relationship. Economic cooperation has also become an important part of bilateral ties. Saudi Arabia has pledged major investments in Pakistan under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 programme. Riyadh has also provided financial assistance to Pakistan during periods of economic and balance-of-payments pressure. Saudi Arabia remains an important source of oil supplies for Pakistan, including arrangements involving deferred payments. The kingdom has also supported Pakistan’s foreign exchange position through deposits with the State Bank of Pakistan. Relations between the two countries have gained further momentum amid changing regional security dynamics. Islamabad and Riyadh have maintained close consultations on regional developments, including tensions involving Iran. Pakistan has also provided military support to Saudi Arabia during periods of heightened security concerns in the region. Al-Baqami succeeds Al-Malki, who served as Saudi ambassador during a period of expanding political, defence and economic cooperation between the two countries. His arrival is expected to provide further momentum to bilateral engagement and strengthen coordination between Islamabad and Riyadh.

Imran said party ignored his orders: Afridi

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and Member of the National Assembly Iqbal Afridi has claimed that jailed former prime minister Imran Khan told him during their last meeting that members of the party were not following his instructions. According to a video statement shared on social media by PTI Senator Faisal Javed Khan, Afridi said he met Imran Khan at Adiala Jail, where the former premier allegedly expressed frustration over the party’s internal affairs. Afridi claimed that Imran Khan told him, “Iqbal, the party is not listening to me. I say this with my hand on the Holy Quran.” The PTI lawmaker said he responded by expressing his loyalty to the party founder. Afridi claimed he told Imran Khan that anyone betraying him deserved the strongest condemnation, while referring to a political slogan from the past. Afridi further said that he never had another meeting with Imran Khan after that conversation. He claimed that if he had met him again and been told the names of those allegedly disobeying party instructions, the situation would have been different. In the video statement, Afridi also made controversial remarks, saying that if he is allowed another meeting and Imran Khan identifies individuals who are not following his directives, he would not spare them. He used threatening language while making the statement. The remarks have drawn attention on social media, although there has been no official response from PTI leadership or other party figures regarding Afridi’s claims. Imran Khan has also not publicly commented on the statements attributed to him.

    Pakistan’s IT exports hit record $4.6 billio…

KARACHI: Pakistan’s information technology (IT) sector achieved a historic milestone in the fiscal year 2025-26, with IT and IT-enabled services (ITeS) exports reaching a record $4.6 billion, marking an impressive 21 percent increase from the previous year’s $3.81 billion. Although the sector narrowly missed the government’s $5 billion export target, the achievement reinforces Pakistan’s position as one of the country’s fastest-growing export industries and strengthens its long-term goal of reaching $10 billion in IT exports by FY2028-29. Industry experts believe the strong performance reflects the steady expansion of Pakistan’s digital economy, driven by a growing pool of skilled professionals, rising demand for remote services, improved internet infrastructure and favourable tax incentives. However, they also caution that the sector must overcome structural challenges and shift towards innovation-led growth to sustain momentum. Pakistan is home to more than 600,000 IT professionals and freelancers, alongside tens of thousands of registered software and IT-enabled services companies operating from major technology hubs in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. Secondary cities such as Faisalabad, Sialkot and Sukkur are also emerging as important contributors to the country’s digital workforce. Software development, business process outsourcing (BPO), enterprise technology services, call centres and freelancing remain the backbone of Pakistan’s IT exports. Meanwhile, demand for advanced services including artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, cloud computing, automation and digital consulting is expanding rapidly as global businesses seek specialised technology solutions. The United States continues to be Pakistan’s largest export destination for IT services, followed by the United Kingdom, the Gulf region, Europe, Canada and several Asian markets. Experts say significant opportunities remain untapped in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Africa and Central Asia, particularly in high-value technology sectors. Industry leaders stress that Pakistan must diversify both its export markets and service offerings. They argue that relying mainly on traditional software development and low-cost outsourcing will limit future growth, while greater investment in AI-powered solutions, enterprise software, cybersecurity and digital transformation services can significantly increase export earnings. Freelancers have also emerged as a major force in Pakistan’s digital economy, contributing an estimated $1.1 billion, or roughly a quarter of total IT exports, during FY2025-26. Online platforms have enabled thousands of professionals to access global clients, creating new employment opportunities and boosting foreign exchange inflows. Beyond export revenues, the sector continues to generate employment, with thousands of technical positions available across the country. The expansion of remote work has also increased opportunities for women and professionals living outside major urban centres. Experts believe the next phase of growth depends on moving beyond providing outsourced services to creating globally competitive technology products and intellectual property. They argue that Pakistan must position itself as a producer of innovation rather than simply a destination for low-cost software development. The country’s AI ambitions are also gaining momentum. Under the National AI Policy 2025, Pakistan plans to establish AI centres of excellence, launch dedicated funding programmes, expand public-sector AI adoption and train around one million people in AI-related skills by 2030. New AI hubs are also being developed to support startups and accelerate innovation. International partnerships are expected to play a key role in this transformation. Pakistan has strengthened technology cooperation with China through joint AI and IT initiatives and recently became a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation (WAICO). At the same time, interest from the United States has grown, with American investors pledging more than $20 million for Pakistan’s technology sector during a recent investment conference. Connectivity has also improved through expanded submarine cable capacity, cross-border fibre links and stronger cloud infrastructure, making it easier for local companies to deliver digital services worldwide. Despite the progress, industry stakeholders warn that policy uncertainty, foreign exchange restrictions, internet disruptions, energy costs, weak intellectual property protection and limited access to global payment systems continue to hinder faster growth. They believe addressing these challenges while promoting innovation and AI-driven technologies will be essential if Pakistan hopes to transform its record-breaking IT industry into a global technology powerhouse.

After winning the toss and batting first, Pakistan Women posted a competitive total of 176 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. The visitors produced an aggressive batting display, with key contributions from the top and middle order helping them set a challenging target of 177 runs. Despite the strong total, Sri Lanka Women responded confidently with an outstanding batting performance. The hosts maintained a steady scoring rate throughout the innings and successfully chased down the target in just 19 overs, losing only four wickets in the process. Sri Lanka’s batters dominated the chase with positive stroke play and well-built partnerships, keeping the required run rate under control from the outset. Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to make regular breakthroughs as the home side continued to build momentum and eventually crossed the finish line with an over to spare. With two games still to be played, the series remains open, and both teams will be eager to secure crucial victories. Pakistan Women will focus on tightening their bowling and fielding, while Sri Lanka Women will aim to continue their winning form and wrap up the series.
