MQM-P rivals move toward reconciliation

KARACHI: Signs of reconciliation have begun to emerge within the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) after a violent confrontation at the party’s Bahadurabad headquarters, with senior leaders initiating behind-the-scenes contacts to ease tensions and restore unity.

Two days after the clash, senior party figures, including Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal and Anees Qaimkhani, visited the party’s central office to discuss organizational affairs. Speaking to reporters, Mustafa Kamal rejected speculation of an internal power struggle, insisting that the party remained united despite recent events.

According to sources, communication has been established between the two rival camps—one led by Mustafa Kamal and the other by Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui—in an effort to defuse tensions. A joint press conference is reportedly being considered as part of efforts to present a united front, although party leaders have neither confirmed nor denied the possibility. Notably, close associates of Siddiqui, who also serves as the party’s convener, did not attend the meeting at the headquarters.

Despite the passage of two days since the confrontation, which reportedly involved a physical altercation and aerial firing, police have yet to register a First Information Report (FIR). Officials said no faction of the party has formally approached law enforcement to lodge a complaint. If neither side files a case, authorities are expected to register one on behalf of the state.

Police sources said a draft FIR has already been prepared and is awaiting approval from senior officials before being formally registered.

Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have carried out raids and detained several MQM-P office-bearers and workers suspected of involvement in the violence. Officials said those currently in custody could face formal arrest once the FIR is registered, as investigations into the incident continue.

Spanish minister bids for top UN labour agency post amid US funding crisis

Spain has officially nominated its Labour Minister and Second Deputy Prime Minister, Yolanda Díaz, to run for Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO). If elected, Díaz would become the first woman to lead the Geneva-based UN agency in its 107-year history. Díaz is set to challenge incumbent Director-General Gilbert Houngbo of Togo, who took office in 2022 as the first African leader of the ILO and is seeking re-election. Her candidacy comes as the agency faces a severe liquidity crisis, exacerbated by unpaid contributions from member states, most notably the United States, which owes 257 million Swiss francs ($315 million) in arrears and has outlined plans to halt funding for the upcoming fiscal year. The nomination highlights her domestic record of labor reforms and social dialogue in Spain, though analysts note her candidacy faces a diplomatic balancing act between securing European support and risking friction with the African diplomatic bloc. The election will take place in November 2026, with the winner’s five-year term beginning in October 2027.

Salman Raja demands Imran’s medical access

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Salman Akram Raja has called for meetings between the party’s founder, Imran Khan, and his sisters and medical team. Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Raja said PTI representatives had met the Registrar of the Supreme Court. During the meeting, they requested that the cases involving the party founder be taken up for hearing without further delay. The PTI leader also demanded that Imran Khan be allowed to meet his sisters. He said access to his doctors should also be restored so that his health can be properly monitored. Raja said the party had been assured that the pending cases would be scheduled for hearing next week. He added that the relevant cause list would also be issued. He expressed concern over the long gap between Imran Khan and his doctors. According to Raja, the PTI founder has not been able to meet his medical team for around one and a half years. ECP begins Islamabad local polls preparations

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has started the delimitation process for holding local government elections in Islamabad. The commission said the formal process will begin on August 1, 2026, and will continue until October 13, 2026. The delimitation of constituencies is a major step before announcing the election schedule. An ECP spokesperson said that after the completion of the delimitation process and publication of the final constituencies, the commission will consult the federal government regarding the date for Islamabad’s local government elections. The spokesperson also shared updates about local government elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In Punjab, delimitation authorities have been directed to submit their decisions to the relevant committees by August 7. The final delimitation list for the province will be published on August 17. The ECP said it is fully prepared to conduct local government elections in Punjab after completing all necessary legal requirements and consultations. Regarding Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the commission said delimitation has been completed in 23 districts, while work is continuing in seven more districts. The spokesperson said the ECP held discussions with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief secretary and local government secretary on July 14 about the election schedule. Provincial authorities were given additional time after requesting support for completing arrangements. The commission said recent amendments to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Local Government Act created legal issues that affected the delimitation process. The ECP informed the provincial government about these concerns and sought cooperation to resolve the matter. The spokesperson said the commission has faced delays in local government elections because federal and provincial governments often change local government laws close to election dates. He said the ECP has repeatedly completed delimitation exercises and prepared election schedules, but changes in legal frameworks affect the process. The commission recommended that major changes to local government laws and boundaries should be completed at least one year before elections. It said this would help ensure a smooth and timely electoral process.

Amitabh Bachchan and Parveen Babi’s complicated bond revisited

Amitabh Bachchan and Parveen Babi were among the most popular on-screen pairs of their era. Their chemistry was widely appreciated, particularly in films such as Deewaar and Kaala Patthar. The two actors developed a friendship while working together, but their relationship later became surrounded by speculation and controversy. At the time, rumours circulated that Amitabh and Parveen were romantically involved, despite Amitabh being married to actress Jaya Bachchan. However, these claims were never established as fact. Reports suggested that Amitabh eventually distanced himself from Parveen, something she reportedly found difficult to accept. Parveen later made disturbing allegations against Amitabh in an interview with a magazine. She claimed that he was an international gangster who wanted to harm her and alleged that his associates had kidnapped her. She further claimed that she had been taken to an island, where she believed doctors performed surgery on her and placed a transmitter or electronic chip beneath her ear. Her allegations attracted considerable attention, but they were later understood in the context of her deteriorating mental health. Parveen had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, a serious mental health condition that can affect a person’s perception, thoughts and behaviour. Amitabh subsequently addressed her claims and explained that her illness had caused her to become extremely fearful of other people and experience delusions and hallucinations. Despite the painful circumstances surrounding their past, another emotional episode involving Parveen occurred years later when she unexpectedly encountered her former boyfriend, actor Kabir Bedi. The meeting took place at a hotel in 2004, approximately a year before Parveen’s death. Kabir later recalled the encounter during a conversation with Siddharth Kannan. According to his recollection, he approached Parveen and greeted her warmly. However, she responded with visible sadness and spoke about how people believed she was mentally unwell. Kabir tried to reassure her, but the conversation reportedly took an emotional turn. He remembered seeing a sudden change in her expression, reflecting the difficult state she appeared to be in at the time. The meeting left a lasting impression on him, particularly because he had known Parveen closely during their relationship years earlier. Parveen Babi’s life and career remain a complicated chapter in Bollywood history. She rose to extraordinary fame during the 1970s and became one of the industry’s most recognisable actresses. Yet, behind her glamorous public image, she struggled with serious mental health difficulties and increasing isolation. Her story has continued to generate discussion because of the contrast between her remarkable success as an actress and the personal struggles she experienced later in life. Her relationships with prominent actors, including Amitabh Bachchan and Kabir Bedi, have also remained subjects of public interest, although many claims surrounding her personal life were based on rumours and accounts that cannot always be independently verified.
