Azma Bukhari hits back at Sharjeel Memon over AJK …

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari has strongly criticised Sindh Minister Sharjeel Memon over his remarks about the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections.

Azma Bukhari told Memon to “drink cold water and pour some on his head,” saying the election was over and the people of AJK had already delivered their verdict.

She said the election results had proved the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) calculations wrong and dismissed its allegations regarding pre-poll rigging.

Bukhari claimed that a PML-N candidate had recovered bags containing ballot papers from the residence of a PPP candidate one night before polling.

Taking a sharp jibe at the PPP, she said its “arrow had disappeared in the valleys of Kashmir,” while the PML-N’s “lion” was roaring across the region.

She said AJK voters had given their verdict in favour of PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif during the first phase of the elections.

Bukhari urged the PPP to learn to accept defeat instead of raising allegations whenever it loses an election. She said political parties should celebrate victories but also show maturity in defeat.

She further questioned the PPP’s position on elections in Gilgit-Baltistan. Bukhari asked whether the party considered those elections transparent because it had formed the government there.

She said it was unfair to describe an election as transparent when a party wins and allege rigging when it loses.

Malik and other relatives reached the apartment and found Hina dead. The family told police that Hina’s hands were tied behind her back, her mouth was covered with cloth and a wire had been placed around her neck and connected to the bathroom shower. Her body was later shifted to Benazir Bhutto Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police have registered a murder case under Sections 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The provisions deal with murder and acts allegedly committed by multiple people with a common intention. Hina’s relatives have accused her husband, Faisal Asghar Imam, his father Asghar Ali Fayyaz and domestic worker Zeeshan Arshad of involvement in her death. The allegations have not been proven, and the suspects have not been convicted. Her family has also alleged that Hina faced repeated physical and psychological abuse during her marriage. Her brother claimed that she had previously complained about mistreatment. He further alleged that her husband had also been abusive toward a previous wife, who later obtained a divorce. Police are investigating the allegations and examining evidence recovered from the apartment. Civil Lines police have said that the investigation remains underway, while no arrests had been reported at the time of the latest statement. Mahira Khan’s public support has brought additional attention to the campaign.     Nirmal Purja’s body recovered after deadly Broad Peak avalanche

    Renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja’s body has been recovered from Broad Peak in Pakistan, days after a devastating avalanche claimed the lives of members of his international climbing team. Rescue officials confirmed that Purja’s remains were found at an altitude of around 5,700 metres on Sunday. Search teams also located three additional bodies on the mountain, although their identities have not yet been officially confirmed. The fatal avalanche struck the 8,047-metre Broad Peak in the Karakoram mountain range during a climbing expedition. Authorities earlier confirmed that at least 10 climbers from different countries lost their lives in the tragedy. Purja, 43, was leading the multinational expedition when the avalanche occurred. Before his body was recovered, rescue teams had already retrieved the remains of American climber Mallory Geis, Omani mountaineer Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy, and Nepalese climber Pur Bahadur Gurung. Rescue operations continue in the difficult high-altitude terrain, with officials working to recover the remaining victims. The recovered bodies are being transported to a nearby base camp before further arrangements are made. Purja was regarded as one of the world’s greatest mountaineers. Born in Nepal, he later served in the British Army and spent several years with the elite Special Forces before pursuing a career in high-altitude climbing. He gained global recognition in 2019 after completing the ascent of all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres in just 189 days, breaking the previous world record by several years.     Meloni faces growing youth backlash ahead of Italy election

    ROME: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is facing growing dissatisfaction among young voters as the country moves closer to a national election expected next year. Recent opinion polls indicate that voters aged 18 to 34 are increasingly moving away from Meloni’s right-wing coalition and towards opposition parties. Analysts say the shift could become significant if young Italians turn out in large numbers at the 2027 election. Lorenzo Pregliasco, head of polling agency Youtrend, said younger voters were clearly showing greater support for the centre-left. Meloni’s coalition, which includes her Brothers of Italy party, Matteo Salvini’s League and Antonio Tajani’s Forza Italia, now has less than 30% support among voters under 35. The opposition bloc, led by the Democratic Party, the 5-Star Movement and the Left-Green Alliance, commands close to half of the support among the same age group. The party has attracted middle-aged men but is also gaining attention among some young urban voters opposed to immigration. The government’s law-and-order policies have further contributed to tensions with sections of the younger population. Measures targeting rave parties, cannabis production, street protests, squatters and juvenile crime have drawn criticism from youth groups. A nationwide student protest known as “No Meloni Day” brought thousands of demonstrators onto the streets last year. Protesters criticised security measures, education spending and Meloni’s position on the Gaza conflict. The government has also proposed changes to rules governing criminal responsibility for minors. Under the proposed legislation, people aged 14 to 17 who commit crimes could be treated as fully responsible unless it is established that they did not understand the consequences of their actions. Youth dissatisfaction has previously been difficult to measure because turnout among younger Italians is traditionally low. Many young voters have tended to stay away from elections rather than support opposition parties. That pattern changed during a March referendum on a judicial reform backed by Meloni. Around 67% of voters under 35 participated, and 60% of them rejected the proposed reform. The result demonstrated the potential influence of young voters when they participate in large numbers.

    QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti on Friday announced that the provincial government is ready to hold political dialogue with those willing to abandon violence, while making it clear that security operations against armed militant groups will continue until peace is restored. Speaking at the passing-out parade of the Anti-Terrorism Force’s 20th basic training course in Quetta, the chief minister said individuals who surrender and renounce militancy would be given an opportunity to rebuild their lives through a comprehensive rehabilitation programme. Under the government’s reintegration plan, former militants will be offered government employment, educational opportunities for their children and access to healthcare facilities to help them become productive members of society. He said the initiative aims to encourage peaceful participation in the province’s development. However, Bugti warned that those who continue armed activities would face firm action. He said the provincial government, Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps, police, Counter Terrorism Department and Anti-Terrorism Force were working together to eliminate terrorism and restore lasting peace across Balochistan. Referring to the recent rise in militant attacks, the chief minister acknowledged that the province’s security challenges had intensified in recent years but expressed confidence that ongoing counterterrorism operations would defeat militant groups. Bugti also urged political leaders to avoid linking political disagreements with acts of terrorism. While criticism of the government was part of the democratic process, he said attacks on the country’s security forces should not be justified or politicised. Addressing the newly graduated ATF personnel, the chief minister praised their commitment to national service and described them as guardians responsible for protecting the people and maintaining peace. He added that the government was reviewing measures to further strengthen the professional training of security personnel to meet emerging security challenges. The chief minister also announced Rs150 million for improving the Anti-Terrorism Force training school’s infrastructure and highlighted recent steps taken to enhance benefits and welfare packages for police personnel and the families of martyred officers, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening law enforcement institutions.

    PM, Dar hand over official gifts to Toshakhana

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and several other senior government officials received a total of 21 official gifts during the April to June period, according to the latest Toshakhana record released by the Cabinet Division. The official record shows that the prime minister and deputy prime minister were among the senior officeholders who received gifts from foreign dignitaries and officials during official meetings and state engagements. In line with the Toshakhana rules, both leaders deposited all the gifts with the Toshakhana instead of retaining them. According to the Cabinet Division, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received several gifts, including a decorative sugar bowl, a luxury pen, a model of Masjid-e-Nabawi (PBUH), a shield and a tie. He also received a model of the Chinese Space Station, a commemorative cup, a wristwatch and another shield during separate official engagements. The records further show that Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar received a Chinese leather belt, a model of an Egyptian statue and a pair of cufflinks as official gifts. These items were also submitted to the Toshakhana in accordance with the prescribed procedure. The Cabinet Division said all gifts received by the prime minister and deputy prime minister have been deposited with the Toshakhana. It added that the process of assessing the monetary value of the gifts is currently in progress. The estimated value will be determined before the record is finalized, following the standard rules governing official gifts received by public officeholders. The Toshakhana maintains a record of gifts presented to government officials by foreign leaders, diplomats and visiting delegations during official visits and meetings. Under the applicable rules, such gifts must be declared and deposited, while their valuation is carried out through the prescribed official mechanism.
