Pakistan, New Zealand seek stronger trade, investment and education ties

WELLINGTON: Pakistan and New Zealand have agreed to intensify bilateral economic and commercial cooperation, with agriculture, livestock, information technology, education and services identified as key areas offering greater potential for collaboration.

The understanding was reached during a series of high-level meetings held in Wellington on August 6, where officials from both countries reviewed the state of bilateral relations and discussed measures to expand trade and investment ties.

According to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Office on Saturday, the discussions placed particular emphasis on improving market access and developing practical avenues for cooperation in sustainable agriculture. The two sides also explored the possibility of technical collaboration in areas such as wool production and plant protection.

The meetings included the 5th round of Pakistan-New Zealand Political Consultations and the 3rd meeting of the Pakistan-New Zealand Joint Trade Committee (JTC). The talks provided both sides with an opportunity to assess existing cooperation and identify new sectors for mutually beneficial economic engagement.

The Pakistani delegation at the Joint Trade Committee meeting was headed by Commerce Secretary Jawad Paul Khawaja, while the New Zealand side was led by Grahame Morton.

Officials also examined ways to strengthen institutional arrangements that could facilitate closer economic cooperation between the two countries. Improving trade relations and creating a stronger framework for investment were among the areas discussed during the engagement.

The political consultations were co-chaired by Ambassador Dr Syed Ali Asad Gillani, Additional Foreign Secretary for Asia Pacific at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Grahame Morton, Deputy Secretary of the Americas and Asia Group at New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

During the consultations, the two delegations conducted a broad review of Pakistan-New Zealand relations and discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in several fields.

These included economic development, science and technology, education, counterterrorism, efforts against transnational crime, high-level exchanges and people-to-people contacts.

The officials also discussed regional and global developments and agreed on the importance of maintaining closer coordination at multilateral forums.

Pakistan briefed New Zealand on its position regarding developments in the Middle East, including Islamabad’s efforts to help reduce tensions and promote peace. The Pakistani delegation also shared its assessment of the regional situation in South Asia, including developments concerning Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and Pakistan’s concerns over India’s actions relating to the Indus Waters Treaty.

According to the Foreign Office, Morton acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive contribution to efforts aimed at promoting peace in the Middle East.

Education cooperation gains momentum

One of the major outcomes of the engagement was the signing of an Education Cooperation Arrangement between Pakistan and New Zealand.

The agreement is expected to provide a foundation for closer cooperation in education and create opportunities for greater institutional engagement between the two countries.

Education was also discussed as an important component of broader people-to-people relations, alongside science, technology and skills development.

The latest consultations come as both countries seek to build on existing bilateral ties and diversify areas of cooperation. Agriculture and livestock, in particular, offer opportunities for technical exchanges and knowledge sharing, while the growing importance of information technology and services could provide additional avenues for economic collaboration.

The two sides also stressed the need to translate discussions into practical initiatives that can improve bilateral trade and investment flows.

Officials described the meetings as an opportunity to take stock of progress in Pakistan-New Zealand relations, explore emerging areas of cooperation and strengthen institutional mechanisms for future engagement.

The discussions concluded with a reaffirmation of the two countries’ commitment to developing a broader, forward-looking partnership based on mutual economic interests, diplomatic coordination and stronger people-to-people connections.

Spain accuses EU allies of ‘selfish’ r…

Spain has accused several European Union governments of a selfish and unlawful reaction after nearly 60,000 migrants crossed into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco, triggering a wave of statements from EU member states calling for tighter border restrictions. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, in a letter addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, described the response from unnamed member states as selfish, polarizing and unlawful. According to a report by the British broadcaster, Sanchez said Madrid had restored order within 48 hours, returning most of the migrants to Morocco and preventing them from reaching mainland Europe. The diplomatic dispute was triggered largely by Italy’s response, which included a temporary suspension of visa free travel with Spain under the Schengen arrangement, along with pointed criticism accusing Madrid of encouraging human trafficking by granting citizenship to more than 500,000 people who had entered the country irregularly. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani wrote on social media that he supports closing the Schengen area to Spain and expressed confidence in the actions of Italy’s interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi. He said uncontrolled and irregular immigration represents a threat to national security, and argued that the situation unfolding in Ceuta demonstrates how Spain’s decision to naturalize large numbers of irregular immigrants was fundamentally wrong and only encourages trafficking. Italy was not alone in calling for a tougher stance. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis went further, calling for Spain to be suspended immediately from the 29 member Schengen arrangement. Finland and Denmark also voiced support for stricter border controls in response to the crisis. Notably, Ceuta itself lies outside the Schengen zone, meaning the enclave is not directly governed by the same free movement rules at the center of the diplomatic dispute between Madrid and its European partners. The clash highlights long standing tensions within the European Union over how to handle migration pressure at its external borders, an issue that has repeatedly strained relations between member states with differing approaches to asylum policy, border enforcement and integration in recent years.

Kevin Owens made an unforgettable return to WWE after spending more than a year away from in-ring competition, defeating Sami Zayn, Finn Bálor and Gunther in a thrilling Fatal Four-Way match at SummerSlam 2026 Night Two. The victory marked a major milestone for the former Universal Champion, who had been sidelined since April 2025 due to a severe neck injury. The injury forced Owens to pull out of a scheduled WrestleMania showdown against Randy Orton and raised concerns about his wrestling future. After undergoing successful neck fusion surgery in July 2025, Owens spent over a year recovering and rehabilitating before finally receiving medical clearance to return to action. His comeback at Minneapolis’ U.S. Bank Stadium was kept completely under wraps, making it one of the biggest surprises of WWE’s biggest event of the summer. The match was originally announced as a one-on-one number-one contender’s contest between longtime rivals Sami Zayn and Finn Bálor. However, moments before the bout began, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis appeared on stage and announced that Gunther would also be entering the match, turning it into a Triple Threat contest. Before he could capitalize, Sami Zayn fought back with a trademark Exploder Suplex into the corner, shifting the momentum once again and bringing himself back into contention. Owens patiently waited for the perfect opportunity to strike. As the action reached its climax, he stunned Gunther with his signature Stunner before immediately turning his attention to Zayn, his longtime friend and former tag-team partner. Owens delivered another devastating Stunner, leaving Zayn unable to recover. Without hesitation, Owens covered Zayn for the decisive three-count, completing a remarkable comeback in his very first match after returning from injury. The emotional victory not only showcased Owens’ resilience but also proved that he remains a top contender despite his lengthy absence from WWE programming. Fans celebrated his successful return, with many calling it one of the most memorable moments of SummerSlam 2026. By winning the Fatal Four-Way contest, Owens also secured a guaranteed future WWE Championship opportunity against reigning champion CM Punk. The result immediately sets up a highly anticipated title clash between two of WWE’s biggest stars, adding another blockbuster rivalry to the company’s championship picture. After overcoming a career-threatening injury and an extended recovery period, Kevin Owens has officially announced his return to the top of WWE, and his impressive SummerSlam performance suggests that his journey back to championship gold may only be beginning.

Angela Levin melts over George, Charlotte and Louis’ rare Scotland outing

Royal commentator Angela Levin has reacted to new photos of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Levin is widely known for her sharp criticism of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. This time, though, her reaction was far warmer. The photos came from a rare public outing. Kate Middleton and Prince William appeared together with their three children at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It isn’t often the young royals are seen together at such events. Following the outing, Kensington Palace shared a striking family photo and video online. The palace captioned the post with a message about the day. “Incredible atmosphere at the Commonwealth Games today. Watching world-class talent compete and seeing the power of sport to bring people together is truly special. Thank you to everyone involved for such a wonderful day,” the caption read. Shortly after, a royal fan account shared a collage of the three children on X, formerly Twitter. The post simply named the children alongside the date of the appearance. Levin responded to the post directly. She wrote, “Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are gorgeous children.” The comment stood out, given her usual tone when discussing the wider royal family. This outing also carried extra weight beyond the photos themselves. It marked the first official occasion where George, Charlotte, and Louis were seen publicly in Scotland together. While in Scotland, William and Kate hold the titles Duke and Duchess of Rothesay. During their visit, the couple spent time with Team Wales athletes and their families at the Games. Afterward, the couple shared a message celebrating the competitors. “Congratulations to every athlete taking part in this year’s Commonwealth Games! A special well done to Team Wales for proudly representing the nation on the international stage. It was a pleasure to join the athletes today at Wales House. For a family that generally keeps its children away from heavy public exposure, this outing offered a rare and candid look into their lives. Even longtime critics like Levin found themselves charmed by the moment, proving that some things manage to cut across royal rivalries entirely.

Dar-e-Nijat takes shocking turn over Zariab-Zamil relationship

Dar-e-Nijat, the new Pakistani prime-time drama airing on ARY Digital, has taken an unexpected turn after a recent episode left viewers questioning the nature of Zariab and Zamil’s relationship. Written by Umera Ahmed and directed by Saqib Khan, the drama explores themes of spirituality, personal beliefs, ambition, and the challenges faced by a young woman as she navigates her life and values. Four episodes of the drama have aired so far, with the latest installment generating considerable discussion among viewers. The episode featured a surprising sequence involving Zariab, who went to the house of her friend Zamil after the baraat ceremony. The story then shifted to the following morning, when Zariab’s grandmother questioned her about where she had been. Zariab remained silent, while the way the scene unfolded appeared to suggest that something significant had happened between her and Zamil. The visual details of the sequence added to the speculation. Zariab was shown washing her face and hands, while Zamil was notably absent. His remorseful message further strengthened the impression that the two had crossed a physical boundary. The scene was deliberately presented without directly showing what had happened, leaving viewers to interpret the events through the characters’ actions and reactions. The ambiguity prompted fans to approach writer Umera Ahmed for clarification. One viewer on X asked Ahmed whether the scene was intended to indicate that Zariab and Zamil had become physically involved. The fan specifically referred to the way Zariab returned home late after the baraat scene, as well as her actions afterward and Dadda’s statement about modesty and honour. Umera Ahmed responded with a brief confirmation, effectively putting an end to the speculation surrounding the scene. The revelation has since sparked a strong reaction among Dar-e-Nijat viewers. Many fans said they had already understood the implication from Zariab’s behaviour and the subtle clues placed throughout the sequence. Rather than directly portraying the incident, the drama relied on expressions, dialogue, silence, and character reactions to communicate what had happened. Some viewers also interpreted Zamil’s actions as an attempt to establish his importance in Zariab’s life and prove that he believed he had a greater claim over her than anyone else. This interpretation has added another layer to the discussion surrounding the characters and their motivations. At the same time, several viewers praised the drama for addressing such a sensitive subject without relying on graphic or overly explicit scenes. They argued that topics involving relationships, intimacy, guilt, and moral boundaries can be more impactful when handled through suggestion rather than direct depiction. The development has undoubtedly changed the direction of Dar-e-Nijat and raised questions about how Zariab will deal with the consequences of her choices. With the drama focusing heavily on spirituality and personal accountability, viewers are now waiting to see how the storyline explores guilt, relationships, faith, and the repercussions of the events between Zariab and Zamil.
