Asian Football Confederation joins UEFA and CONCACAF in FIFA proposal standoff

The Asian Football Confederation has taken a clear stand, and it is backing UEFA and CONCACAF on a growing football dispute. The issue centres on a FIFA proposal. It involves bringing private investment into the World Cup’s business operations. The AFC confirmed its position on Friday.

In its statement, the AFC expressed solidarity with the two other confederations. It raised serious concerns over FIFA’s plan. The organisation represents 47 member nations. These include Australia, China, Japan and Saudi Arabia. Its statement made clear how seriously the body views the matter.

The AFC did not stop there. It pointed out that talk of a possible World Cup boycott has already entered public discussion. According to the AFC, this alone should concern anyone who cares about the sport’s future. It added that this concern should apply across all confederations, not just a few.

FIFA responded with its own statement soon after. It said every member association should get a fair chance to review the proposal. The governing body also acknowledged the feedback it had received from UEFA and CONCACAF.

FIFA confirmed something significant in its response. All 41 member associations under CONCACAF had rejected the plan. This body oversees football across North and Central America. Their rejection focused specifically on selling a stake in the World Cup’s operations.

FIFA also addressed reports around its consultation process. It said the process had been disrupted by what it called inaccurate media coverage. Still, it maintained respect for the concerns raised publicly. It reaffirmed its commitment to keeping things open and democratic.

The organisation said it plans to continue with its consultation as scheduled. Its goal, according to the statement, is to let every member vote based on facts. FIFA wants to avoid decisions being shaped by speculation instead.

This disagreement adds to a growing list of tensions. FIFA’s push for private investment has already faced resistance from two major confederations. Now, with the AFC joining them, the pressure on football’s global body appears to be increasing.

For now, attention remains fixed on FIFA’s next move. All eyes are on how it plans to carry out its consultation process. Many are also watching to see whether these mounting concerns can be addressed, without deepening the divide among football’s governing bodies worldwide.

    KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) wrapped up the trading week on a bullish note, with investors driving the benchmark KSE-100 Index sharply higher amid sustained buying interest and renewed market optimism. According to the PSX’s weekly market update, the KSE-100 Index gained 5,072 points during the week, closing at 176,094 points. The strong performance reflected growing investor confidence as the market continued its upward momentum. Throughout the week, the benchmark index traded within a 4,510-point range, touching a weekly high of 179,123 points while falling to a low of 174,612 points. Analysts said the wide trading range highlighted active investor participation and healthy market activity. The rally capped off a positive week in which the stock market maintained strong momentum. On the final trading day of July, the KSE-100 Index had already climbed 546 points, setting the stage for an impressive weekly finish. Trading activity also remained robust. During the five trading sessions, investors exchanged approximately 4.15 billion shares, with the total value of transactions reaching Rs158 billion, indicating strong liquidity and continued interest from market participants. Meanwhile, the market’s overall capitalization increased by Rs477 billion over the week, reaching Rs19.755 trillion. The significant rise in market value underscores improving sentiment among investors despite ongoing economic challenges. Market experts say the latest gains reflect confidence in Pakistan’s financial markets, supported by sustained institutional buying and expectations of improving macroeconomic conditions. However, they caution that investors will continue to monitor economic indicators, corporate earnings and policy developments that could influence market direction in the coming weeks. The latest weekly performance reinforces the Pakistan Stock Exchange’s position as one of the region’s best-performing markets this year, with investors hoping the bullish trend will continue if economic stability and positive business sentiment remain intact.

    UN condemns Swat blast as Pakistan warns of Afghan…

    UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the deadly suicide bombing in Swat, describing the attack as “heinous and cowardly” as Pakistan renewed its warning that terrorist groups continue to operate from alleged safe havens inside Afghanistan. The attack took place outside a police station in Kabal, Swat, on August 2, killing at least 16 Pakistani nationals, mostly civilians, and leaving dozens injured, according to the UN statement cited by Pakistan’s Dawn. The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the bombing. In a statement issued through the office of the UN secretary general’s spokesperson, Security Council members expressed deep sympathy to the families of those killed and wished the injured a speedy recovery. The council also stressed that those behind the attack must be held accountable, calling for perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of terrorism to be brought to justice. The UN body reiterated its longstanding position that terrorism, regardless of its motivation, location or perpetrators, remains a serious threat to international peace and security. It also urged member states to cooperate with Pakistan in accordance with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions. Pakistan Raises Alarm Over Afghan Sanctuaries The condemnation came shortly after Pakistan raised concerns at a UNSC briefing over what it described as the growing threat from terrorist organisations operating from Afghan territory. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, said several groups continue to maintain safe havens inside Afghanistan and pose an increasing threat to Pakistan and regional security. He specifically named the banned TTP, Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its Majeed Brigade, Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K), East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), and Al Qaeda affiliates. Pakistan urged the international community to ensure that Afghan soil is not used to launch terrorist attacks against neighbouring countries, while calling for stronger international cooperation to counter cross-border terrorism. The latest developments have added fresh pressure to an already sensitive security relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan. They also came after the fourth US-Pakistan Counterterrorism Dialogue in Washington, where officials from both countries reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorist organisations. For Pakistan, the UNSC condemnation provides international recognition of the seriousness of the Swat attack, while Islamabad continues to push for stronger action against militant networks it says operate across its western border.
