PML-N France marks Independence Day

PARIS: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) France organized a ceremony to mark Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day, bringing together party officials, members of the Pakistani community and supporters to celebrate the country’s national day.

The ceremony, held at the local level, was presided over by PML-N France President Mian Muhammad Hanif. In his address, Hanif extended Independence Day greetings to Pakistanis in France and paid tribute to the spirit of unity and patriotism among the Pakistani community abroad.

He said Pakistan had gained greater recognition and respect internationally under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, stressing the need for collective efforts to preserve the country’s standing and support its continued development.

Hanif urged Pakistanis to remain united and contribute to building a stronger and more prosperous Pakistan. He said progress and stability would help create better opportunities for the younger generation, enabling Pakistanis living abroad to move forward with greater confidence and pride in their homeland.

The ceremony also featured speeches by the president of the PML-N France Women’s Wing, other party office-bearers and individuals seeking future organizational positions. Speakers highlighted the importance of Pakistan’s Independence Day and emphasized the role of overseas Pakistanis in supporting the country and strengthening national unity.

A large number of members of the Pakistani community attended the event, reflecting their strong attachment to Pakistan and their enthusiasm for celebrating the national occasion.

PML-N Azad Kashmir leader Raja Ashfaq Hussain thanked the media, organizers and participants for their presence and support. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to celebrating Independence Day in France with the same enthusiasm and patriotic spirit in the years ahead.

The event concluded with renewed expressions of solidarity with Pakistan and a pledge to continue promoting unity, progress and a positive image of the country among the Pakistani diaspora.

Yabloko currently holds no seats in the national parliament, where the ruling United Russia party and other pro-Kremlin factions maintain complete dominance. However, the upcoming campaign had offered the party a national platform to advocate for an immediate ceasefire. The court’s decision arrives amid shifting public sentiment regarding the conflict. Recent polling by the independent Levada Centre indicated that public support for military actions in Ukraine dropped to 66% in July, marking its lowest point since February 2022.

    Murree imposes Section 144 ahead of Independence D…

    Authorities in Murree have imposed Section 144 to maintain law and order during the Independence Day celebrations. According to an official notification, the restrictions came into effect on August 10 and will remain in place until August 16, 2026. The decision has been taken ahead of August 14 celebrations. Murree is expected to receive a large number of visitors during the holiday period. Officials have therefore introduced restrictions to manage crowds and prevent any situation that could affect public safety. Under the notification, access to key areas of the hill station will also be regulated. Only families will be allowed to visit Mall Road and GPO Chowk during the restriction period. Mall Road is among Murree’s busiest areas and usually attracts large crowds during public holidays. GPO Chowk is also a major gathering and commercial point. Limiting access to these locations is expected to help authorities control movement and reduce overcrowding. Security personnel will remain alert during the Independence Day period. Visitors have been advised to cooperate with law-enforcement personnel and follow the restrictions announced by the authorities. The administration is also expected to monitor the situation closely as visitor numbers increase. Any further measures required for crowd management and public safety may be taken during the restriction period.

    LAHORE: Provincial Minister for Housing Punjab Bilal Yasin has said that the spiritual and religious teachings of Hazrat Pir Makki Sharif (RA) are a timeless source of guidance, inspiring people towards divine love, devotion to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), humility, compassion, brotherhood and service to humanity. He said that the saints and spiritual leaders devoted their lives to the propagation of Islam, purification of the soul, moral reform and the promotion of a peaceful, harmonious and exemplary society. He expressed these views while inaugurating the Urs Mubarak of Hazrat Pir Makki Sharif (RA) and participating in the traditional chadar poshi ceremony. Secretary/Chief Administrator Auqaf Punjab Dr. Ehsan Bhutta, Director General Religious Affairs Hafiz Anees ur Rehman, Director Administration Shakir Sandhu, officers of the Auqaf Department, and a large number of devotees and followers were also present. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ehsan Bhutta said that Hazrat Pir Makki Sharif (RA), whose real name was Hazrat Sheikh Syed Ali Qadri (RA), also known as Sheikh Syed Ali Makki, is regarded among the prominent and earliest renowned Sufi saints associated with Lahore. He said that the title “Makki” reflects his traditional association with Makkah Mukarramah, from where he is believed to have travelled to Lahore. His association is traced to the Ghaznavid era, around the 11th century CE/5th century AH. Hazrat Pir Makki Sharif (RA) devoted his life to the propagation of Islamic teachings, purification of the soul, social reform and service to humanity, and his spiritual and moral legacy continues to guide and inspire devotees in Lahore and across Pakistan. Dr. Ehsan Bhutta further emphasized that the teachings of Hazrat Pir Makki Sharif (RA) underscore a strong relationship with Allah Almighty, righteousness, humility and compassion for His creation, and that their practical implementation can help build a peaceful, morally upright and exemplary society. He said that the Khanqahs and shrines of the saints are an integral part of Pakistan’s rich religious and spiritual heritage, serving as centres for the dissemination of peace, love, tolerance, brotherhood and service to humanity. He stressed that transmitting the noble teachings of Hazrat Pir Makki Sharif (RA) to the younger generation is a collective responsibility so that youth remain connected with their spiritual heritage and incorporate its positive and reformative message into their daily lives. He added that the Government of Punjab, in accordance with the vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, is taking effective measures to provide devotees visiting the shrines of saints with the best possible facilities, cleanliness, security and other essential arrangements. On the occasion, a 50-pound cake was cut, while a large-scale Langar distribution was also formally inaugurated for devotees and visitors. The ceremony concluded with special prayers for the security, peace, prosperity and stability of Pakistan, the safety of the Armed Forces of Pakistan, and the unity, solidarity and progress of the Muslim Ummah.

    Russia blasts Japan over Putin’s Kuril visit

    MOSCOW: Russia has strongly condemned recent remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi concerning President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Iturup Island. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described Tokyo’s criticism as unacceptable and rejected Japan’s objections to Putin visiting the island, which Moscow considers part of Russian territory. Zakharova accused senior Japanese officials of attempting to dictate where the Russian president could travel within his own country. She said Moscow regarded the Japanese statements as politically motivated and legally invalid, arguing that Russia’s sovereignty over the southern Kuril Islands was not open to question. The dispute over the islands remains one of the most sensitive issues in Russia-Japan relations. Japan refers to the southern islands as the Northern Territories and maintains its own claim over them. Zakharova said Tokyo’s current approach reflected what she called an increasingly hostile policy towards Russia. She criticised Japan for joining Western sanctions against Moscow and for providing political, military and technical support to Ukraine. According to the Russian spokeswoman, these policies have seriously damaged bilateral relations that had been developed over decades. She also accused Japan of undermining international legal principles while attempting to lecture Moscow on international law and the future of bilateral relations. Zakharova further argued that Japan’s policies did not serve the interests of its own population or contribute to regional stability. Moscow maintains that the southern Kuril Islands became part of the Soviet Union following the Second World War and argues that their status was established through post-war agreements. The Russian official also accused Tokyo of reviving what she described as revisionist and revanchist narratives. She warned that such rhetoric could have wider consequences for peace and security across the Asia-Pacific region. Russia said the latest Japanese statements risked further damaging already strained relations between the two countries and ran counter to broader regional efforts to promote stability, cooperation and peace.

    Dar calls for Muslim unity to protect Al-Aqsa

    Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has urged Arab and Islamic countries to stand together to protect Al-Aqsa Mosque and defend the rights of the Palestinian people amid the worsening situation in occupied Jerusalem and the West Bank. Speaking at a ministerial meeting on Jerusalem in Amman, Jordan, Dar said Muslim nations must adopt a united and coordinated approach to preserve the sanctity of Jerusalem’s holy sites. He stressed that immediate action is needed to stop violations at Al-Aqsa Mosque and maintain the site’s historical and legal status. Dar said the international community must ensure unrestricted access to Jerusalem’s holy places and prevent any attempts to alter their religious or historical character. He added that continued Israeli actions threaten regional stability and undermine prospects for a lasting peace. The foreign minister strongly opposed Israeli settlement expansion, annexation efforts, forced displacement of Palestinians and demographic changes in the occupied territories, including East Jerusalem. He said such measures violate international law and several United Nations Security Council resolutions. He also called for the complete implementation of the Gaza peace plan and all relevant UN resolutions. Dar welcomed diplomatic efforts by the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye, expressing hope that all parties would honour their commitments and move the peace process forward. Referring to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Dar said the ceasefire had brought limited relief, but conditions remained critical. He noted that millions of Palestinians continue to face severe food shortages, displacement and insecurity despite recent progress. Dar urged Muslim countries to strengthen diplomatic efforts to ensure international protection for Palestinians and hold those responsible for violations of international law accountable. He said justice and respect for international law are essential for achieving sustainable peace. Reaffirming Pakistan’s longstanding support for Palestine, Dar said Israel has no sovereignty over occupied East Jerusalem or its Islamic and Christian holy sites. He reiterated Pakistan’s support for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. The minister also warned that continued attacks on religious sites could inflame tensions across the Muslim world and increase the risk of wider regional conflict. The ministerial meeting concluded with a joint declaration by Arab and Muslim foreign ministers announcing the creation of a permanent mechanism to document Israeli violations in Jerusalem and at its Islamic and Christian holy sites. The mechanism will include a media platform to record incidents involving worshippers and religious sites and present documented evidence before international organisations and the global community. The declaration reaffirmed that East Jerusalem remains an occupied territory and rejected all unilateral measures aimed at changing its legal or demographic status. It also stressed that a two-state solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace in the region. On the sidelines of the meeting, Dar held separate discussions with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Türkiye, Jordan and Somalia. The meetings focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, reviewing regional developments and coordinating diplomatic efforts on the Palestinian issue.

    Australia, Spain secure victories in Hockey World Cup 2026

      WAVRE: Australia began their FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over Ireland in Pool C at the Belfius Hockey Arena on Sunday. The Australian side, ranked third in the world, produced a strong attacking display in the opening half and established a commanding three-goal advantage before the interval. Joel Rintala was the standout performer for Australia, scoring twice, while Blake Govers also found the net through a penalty corner. Australia opened the scoring when Rintala successfully converted an opportunity to beat Irish goalkeeper Jamie Carr. The early goal gave Australia confidence, and they continued to apply pressure on Ireland’s defence. Rintala then struck again to double Australia’s advantage and put Ireland under increasing pressure. The Australians continued their dominance before half-time, with Blake Govers adding another goal from a penalty corner. His successful conversion gave Australia a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break and left Ireland facing a difficult task in the second half. Ireland returned after the interval with a much more aggressive approach. The Irish players adopted a higher press and began creating more opportunities around the Australian circle. Australia successfully protected their 3-1 advantage until the final whistle, securing an important victory in their opening Pool C fixture. In the other Pool C match, Spain also made an impressive start to their World Cup campaign by defeating South Africa 3-1. Spain, known as the Redsticks, immediately took control of the contest and put South Africa under considerable pressure. Their attacking efforts produced two goals in quick succession during the first half. Forward Marc Reyne opened the scoring in the 11th minute before Jose Basterra doubled Spain’s advantage just one minute later. Spain continued to dominate possession and maintain pressure on their opponents. Basterra added his second goal towards the end of the second quarter, giving Spain a commanding 3-0 lead at half-time. South Africa fought back after the break and managed to score through Mustapha Cassiem in the third quarter. The goal provided some encouragement, but Spain remained in control and prevented South Africa from producing a stronger comeback. Despite South Africa’s efforts in the latter stages, Spain comfortably held on to their advantage and completed a 3-1 victory. With both Australia and Spain winning their opening matches, Pool C has begun with strong performances from the two sides as the competition for the knockout stages intensifies.
